Gravy for a baby?!

RealReginaPhalange · 14/09/2025 14:55

6.5months old baby, weaning started about 2 weeks ago, he is doing not bad so far. Been told to give him gravy (like a bisto one). Rejected the idea and i am the bad one (again).

my second child so i know what i am doing. My first one ended up eating everything i serve, loving veggies etc, so not everything i do is stupid obviously…it worked before.

aibu to said no? Wont be giving my ds bisto gravy?

Do what you want but I’m laughing at the fact you think doing exactly the same thing with food will have exactly the same results.

Laugh as much as you want. Might not give the same results, but doing it right wont harm the baby and this is what important to me. All i said i have done it once already so its not new to me, we had challenges like everyone obviously and will have different ones this time round too. What a silly comment

I hate this assumption by some people that there are right ways and wrong ways. It’s so blinkered.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 14/09/2025 16:01

I let my one year old have about 15ml of homemade gravy on his Christmas lunch.

The salt issue can be overegged, as some babies don't eat much of anything, but as PP say, any food is interesting at that age!

I think the story about the 3m old, whilst horrifying, points to a whole host of issues if they were feeding a 3m baby anything, even if it was 1999. Public health guidance has to cater to the lowest common denominator, so has to say a maximum that is the lowest safe amount for the smallest, least mature child in that age range to receive on a daily basis.

If you occasionally go a very small amount over, no need to panic, but also not needed at this age.

TearsForFears25 · 14/09/2025 16:02

We give my almost 12 mo low salt gravy.

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 14/09/2025 16:03

Just watch the salt content but nothing wrong with gravy otherwise. Infact with mash it’s great spoon food and meat or other veg dipped in it it’s great messy finger food.

yum

after 6 months they can eat pretty much anything you can except whole nuts and honey

AtomicBlondeRose · 14/09/2025 16:08

Bisto once made into gravy has about half a baby’s recommended salt limit in 50ml (0.47g salt). However, 50ml is a sizeable amount (two full tablespoons) and I’ve never known a 6 month old baby to eat that much of one thing. So a teaspoonful drizzled over their meal (5ml) wouldn’t be any problem really. But don’t give it if you don’t want to. I do think babies eat a very small amount of anything offered so it’s not worth stressing over in the great scheme of things. The oft-quoted news story above is about a very small baby being fed a large amount of very inappropriate foods. Not a weaning-age baby having a potato dipped in gravy.

tripleginandtonic · 14/09/2025 16:09

Mine loved gravy and mash at 6 months old. Yabu.

PumpkinSparkleFairy · 14/09/2025 16:09

I wouldn’t serve Bisto to anyone I like 😂

Obviously homemade gravy is fine.

youalright · 14/09/2025 16:10

You can buy baby gravy. Bisto maybe a bit here and there won't hurt but id be very mindful about it far to much salt.

Lollytea655 · 14/09/2025 16:10

The low salt version & a little bit would be fine. I wouldn’t be serving a meal swimming in it 3 meals a day but the little bit on a Sunday dinner isn’t going to do any harm.

Why could a baby that is being weaned onto food not have home-made gravy ?? I don’t add any salt when making it ?

Edited

Doesn’t your gravy contain stock? Like stock cubes or a stock pot pod?

So you go from just milk to ‘anything’ when they are 6 months old?

Ignore everything i said i just googled and I don't think you can actually buy baby friendly gravy and iv just found out baby gravy is slang for something very different 🙈

JDM625 · 14/09/2025 15:26

I can't believe some people on here think a baby can have even home made gravy!!! Why?

Why not also give him a beer and a cigar?

@JDM625

You can make home made gravy for babies using meat juices, flour and no-salt stock cubes.

@bumbaloo

You can buy stock cubes for babies that dont have salt.

No. I use home made chicken stock, made from simmering a chicken carcass, with onion, herbs, etc. I don’t tend to cook roast beef, so no beef gravy.

Exactly! Gravy granules are an abomination!

oviraptor21 · 14/09/2025 16:20

Bisto is delicious 😋
I would prefer to be served Bisto than home made to be honest!
There is a low salt version. I haven't looked at the salt content but I'd wager it's no more upf than lots of the commercial baby foods. In small amounts I wouldn't have a problem with the low salt version.

Timeforabitofpeace · 14/09/2025 16:22

Absolutely not. Don’t wean your child on processed crap, salty or not.

Whole nuts, hpney... And too much salt.

That's what we did.

We did start out with baby food but it didn't too long before they were pretty much just eating a smaller version of what we'd be eating. They didn't have things like gravy every day and when they did, it was a small amount.

My in-laws! Same people who told me i should let them raise my first child for a couple of years, when he was a baby, so i can work full time and recover our savings and pay debts quicker. (They live on the other side of the world and my visa was rejected so i wouldnt be able to go there in case anything happens). Got very offended when i said no, apparently i am “precious”, others do it.

wtf! I imagine you’re extremely glad they live on the other side of the world.
