Gravy for a baby?!

6.5months old baby, weaning started about 2 weeks ago, he is doing not bad so far. Been told to give him gravy (like a bisto one). Rejected the idea and i am the bad one (again).

my second child so i know what i am doing. My first one ended up eating everything i serve, loving veggies etc, so not everything i do is stupid obviously…it worked before.

aibu to said no? Wont be giving my ds bisto gravy?

I don't think it's that wild of a suggestion. Lots of people wean babies with a little bit of what everyone else is having wizzed up, which in lots of homes includes gravy. At 6 months it's unlikely they are going to eat very much and if your in laws live on the other side of the world it's not like they have much say in what you feed the baby. If you disagree with their suggestion just say ' maybe I'll try that' and move on.

Salt consumption is less than 1g per day under 1, but you can average it out over a week or so, so so long as you’re usually serving salt free foods then he’ll be fine with a little taste. But tbh I dont give my under 1 gravy. My 3 year old would drink it if I offered it to her!

Mine doesn't. I roast the meat in onions, carrots and garlic, then mix the meat juices with cornflour. Then add the water I used to boil the cabbage or broccoli.
Plenty of flavour without using a stock cube.

Yes, we did. Obviously at 6 months they don't eat huge quantities but we offered them some of whatever we were eating from the start of weaning.

YANBU too high salt content I bought baby stock cubes once we were past the first few months of weaning he loved them. Tell your in laws the medical advice has changed due to studies on the effects of too much salt and you’ll be following that advice

A baby gets about 0.5g of sodium per day f pm breastmilk and formula. Which is their entire daily recommended limit. Even a small amount of gravy can almost double that.

Yes. That’s what we did. Straight on to normal food as a mix of finger food or spoon food.

they ate what we did - watching the salt content and avoiding whole nuts and honey.

That's how I make my gravy (usually minus the garlic though). I always use meat juices and the veg water from whatever veg I'm serving. Absolutely no need for a stock cube.

I usually just stuff some cloves under the chicken skin here and there. Definitely agree there's no need for a stock cube!

This is extreme, but gravy should not be fed to babies in anything other than minute quantities, if at all.

Just watch the salt content but nothing wrong with gravy otherwise. Infact with mash it’s great spoon food and meat or other veg dipped in it it’s great messy finger food.

Babies should not have too much salt, haven't read the full thread but years ago there was a baby who died because it was weaned on mash potato and gravy and weetabix. It was the salt content that killed them. Don't know if this was the case referred to.

I sometimes give my baby a bit of gravy, watered down on his dinner. It’s not going to hurt once a month or so (we don’t have a roast very often)

Ready Brek used to have added salt back in 1999 but they removed it after the tragic death of baby Lee Elders.

I would add, weaning at 3-4 months was the norm in 1999.

I do similar but make a vegetarian version for dd by airfrying vegetables then adding water & worcester sauce, then blending it & putting through a sieve

Laugh as much as you want. Might not give the same results, but doing it right wont harm the baby and this is what important to me. All i said i have done it once already so its not new to me, we had challenges like everyone obviously and will have different ones this time round too. What a silly comment

I got the reduced salt one and they had a really small drizzle over their roast etc.
