I am scared my husband will be beaten or worse

Flightsandfeelings · 13/09/2025 17:38

I am married to a man who is brown and from Asia, he's been in UK 10 years and is a citizen. I am English and have always lived in the UK.
We are leaving where we live to move closer to my parents, which I am happy about for many reasons one being where we live right now is an incredibly hostile and racist place. One of the worst in all of the UK and has been for some time.
The area we are moving to is nice enough and we should be safe in our home l, which we aren't really now.

I am scared everyday when my husband goes out that he will be assaulted for being brown with an accent. I am also scared the same will be the case for when we move with the uptake in angry, mindless fake-news concerning people who look like him.

He is shouted at and people are aggressive already and we've both seen how it has gotten worse. Where we live people are burnt of their homes for not being white so my view of all this is coloured by that but not unfairly so.

Jesus Christ this thread is appalling! Can all of you “I don’t believe you” brigade imagine saying these things to a woman who was scared of walking home alone for instance? I don’t believe you? I’ve not seen that myself so it’s not happening? I haven’t read that in the paper? Appalling.

Im so sorry you have been made to feel like this op. I’m ashamed of my country right now. I truly hope you can feel safe and peaceful in your new home op.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 13/09/2025 18:32

Google racist attacks NI.
Last year, many stores were burnt out belonging to non national, cafés had furniture piled up on the street.
A black lady, a carer was chases by a gang, she died of an asthma attack, children attacked in school, adults chanting racial abuse.
My DH is from Belfast.

GinaandGin · 13/09/2025 18:32

WillowDB · 13/09/2025 18:20

This thread doesn’t ring true.

Why?

Whateverwillwedonow · 13/09/2025 18:35

The posts here are shocking! Posters saying that they don’t believe op, you don’t see what’s going on in the world?
Imagine how scary it is to be targeted for the colour of your skin or your accent.

I really hope that you can both feel safe op.

I’m not questioning someone’s fear and feeling, you will see in my first post that I acknowledged those and said I understood why they felt that way.

what I am questioning is the situations the OP was describing which appear to be unverifiable. No doubt much of this has been whipped up by the far left to destabilise the country.

Violence against women and white men has also been increasing round here.

Presumably you can ‘verify’ this then, as you’re expecting the OP to?

Readyforslippers · 13/09/2025 18:28

Do some further reading. There are many, many examples.

Absolutely, riots in ballymena went on for nights and everyday in Northern Ireland there are hate crimes reported

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 13/09/2025 18:36

madonninamia · 13/09/2025 18:26

I’m also shocked by the replies on here and can only assume that the barely masked defensiveness in some of the nastiness shows exactly why the OP has every reason to feel what she feels. It’s a f**king disgrace how emboldened people are becoming with their racism, xenophobia, I’ve come across it and I’m white but married to someone not from the UK and the things I’ve had to experience are off the chart disgusting. I blame not only farage but Brexit too. Ever since that point Britain has changed and not for the better. There I’ve said it!

Edited

You might be shocked, but most of the posts on here have been an attempt to bring back some balance. OPs husband is statistically still very very unlikely to be attacked because of his race (more likely to be attacked because he is a man). What people are trying to do is rebalance some of the social media narrative that is designed to whip up fear about a certain position. Everyone is at risk of attack. The OP is living in a social media driven fear. She needs to find a way of dealing with that. As the mother of a teenage boy I have to deal with fear of all manner to happening to him, specifically stabbing (although much less likely to happen here) Just as I have to find a way of dealing with the fear my husband will be attacked tonight as he works as a police officer (a risk which has got much much higher with the hate against the police the left have been whipping up)

I feel the flag bearers and marchers on the far right are just as much to blame for whipping up frenzy and violence, if not more.

Either way, I hope that everyone stays safe, including your husband.

To be honest, a lot of my fear is what's happening in where I am and incidents reported back by friends or first hand accounts by my husband. I purposefully dont seek out news of social media about any of this because it would be unhelpful.

I really hope your husband stays safe at work. 🙏 and your son with just everything young people have to face at the moment. It must be a hard burden for you to carry.

Racist riots, in which people who look like the OP’s DH were targeted.

@Flightsandfeelings

The problem with my country is the potential for a gun to appear.

We were forced to move our native town when my dad was identified as being a member of the British Forces. He was "lifted" & given the clear instruction to leave.

Those times are gone but some of the "insular" communities still produce & occasionally export violence.

You need to be on your guard or move.

That must have been incredibly frightening for you all. I am so sorry that happened to you. I'm glad you left and were able to stay safe (I hope) but you shouldn't have had to.
We have not been told to leave, thankfully, but are going before it gets to that point.

I cant find any instance of this in the media - and it would be all over it. I think white men are much more likely to be attacked.

in the kindest way OP, and I understand why, you seem to have been swayed into panic by social media.

People have been having their homes attacked and burned in Northern Ireland. Dont know if that's where OP is but you should look harder.

Iamthemoom · 13/09/2025 18:49

Judging by the racism on this thread alone it’s no wonder op is scared. I’m devastated by what’s happening to our country, I never thought I’d live to see anything like this level of far right mania and overt racism becoming so popular and mainstream.

I’m sorry op. I’m half Indian but born here and I’m scared too, particularly for some family members. I’ve experienced and witnessed more racism in the past few weeks than in my whole life.

Getting off SM and MN would be a start . The sheer number of political threads is eye watering with so many people posting about the same thing . We must have had 10+ threads about flags alone and that means you think they are everywhere but it’s not true .

The lack of awareness is staggering

The rally in London today was so much bigger than anyone had anticipated. I've just been watching the coverage and I have to say, I'm somewhat disturbed. The media are suggesting 100k in attendance, but clearly it's many times that number. I felt like I was in a Black Mirror episode. I could literally see the numbers of people on screen, but the reporter was talking about a different number.

Why?

What is going on with our news media?

Something VERY worrying is happening but the media are literally lying about it.

Why?

I feel for you and your Husband. I think Charlie Kirks murder was the catalyst for a HUGE surge of pent up emotion and and anger to be let out. I've never seen anything like what happened in London today. Two weeks ago, I drove almost the entire length of the M4 and then half the M25, almost EVERY overpass and bridge had either a Union Jack or George's Cross flying from the railings. At the time, I thought how odd, how strange, now I know why.

I don't think your Husband is any physical danger. However, I think societal changes will make it very difficult for you both to live here. Today was a turning point in the UK, I really hate to say it, but I think it's true.

We are heading down a VERY dark path.

I know Twitter isn't a great source but the are saying three million. The anti racism group had 5000 and the Tommy Robinson lot had basically tried to break through and almost surrounded them. The smaller group looked to be mainly made up of women, older people and also children. Hope it wasn't as terrifying as it looked as the anti migrant march seemed to be young men, and the ones figting police football hooligans and racists.

madonninamia · 13/09/2025 19:01

@MyHeartyCoralSnail I’m afraid I have to disagree, the replies seem heckling to me.

I’m surprised that you as the partner of someone who works in the police force are not more aware of the simmering tensions going on in this country. And I wish it was only from social media or media, unfortunately I’m seeing this first hand on the streets, on public transport especially; not everyday thank god but much much more often than I used to, and to be honest it’s getting pretty uncomfortable living around the UK at the moment.

It’s interesting isn’t it. We had to leave the area we had lived in for 20 odd years, pull our child out of his school because influx into the area by people (migrants) who refused to integrate who kept to their own communities, who fundamentally changed the area as services adapted to their cultures. I’ve watched local traditions wither and die as the incoming population refused to support them. I have had my son come home from school, fed up because the majority of kids would only mix in the eir own communities, I have seen his education suffer because some of his classes consisted nearly entirely of kids whose second language was not English.

It was nowhere near 3 million judging by the videos, I think people just don't understand what that would look like and it sounds good. 100-150kish sounds more likely based on what I watched today.

(Think it was some UK General commenting on The Troubles).

Oh I am fully aware of exactly what he is coming across, I’m aware of how different groups interact with him on duty and their attitudes to police, I’m very aware of the fact that the vast majority of victims of violence were white men. I’m very aware of gang culture (of all types). I’m very ware of lots of things, especially the actual nature of the underlying tensions in certain areas.
