I am scared my husband will be beaten or worse

I am married to a man who is brown and from Asia, he's been in UK 10 years and is a citizen. I am English and have always lived in the UK.
We are leaving where we live to move closer to my parents, which I am happy about for many reasons one being where we live right now is an incredibly hostile and racist place. One of the worst in all of the UK and has been for some time.
The area we are moving to is nice enough and we should be safe in our home l, which we aren't really now.

I am scared everyday when my husband goes out that he will be assaulted for being brown with an accent. I am also scared the same will be the case for when we move with the uptake in angry, mindless fake-news concerning people who look like him.

He is shouted at and people are aggressive already and we've both seen how it has gotten worse. Where we live people are burnt of their homes for not being white so my view of all this is coloured by that but not unfairly so.

I dont want to say where we live as it would be outing, but there have been and continue to be attacks such as this. After a few they stopped being reported.

That doesn't make sense, if it's a widespread issue how could saying where you live be outing?

You can't be the only Asian family or there wouldn't be multiple homes to be set on fire

I live near a very multicultural area and I've never heard of this happening in the local news and I can't believe it wouldn't be reported

Hairyfairy01 · 13/09/2025 18:15

I’m so sorry you feel like this OP. You and your family would be very welcome on my street too.

Typical white privilege, being unaware on what’s going on around them.

Like other posters, I've also not read, seen or heard in the news or on social media of people being burned out of their homes. It hasn't happened in my city - and trust me I would know. So short of actually travelling around the country to personally look for those instances, how the fuck are people supposed to know? Since you are obviously devoid of any white privilege and have your finger firmly on the pulse of current affairs, perhaps you'd care to provide a link to these atrocities? And just for reference I'm mixed race so white privilege doesn't apply.

Can do without the racial slur, stereotyping white people, thanks.

“White privilege” is not a racist slur.

It's not shameful to not know something, especially if it's not widely reported in the national news. People aren't psychic.

It's widely enough reported that not having lived in northern Ireland for 20 years I knew about it from national news before any family members told me.

This is so true. Wake up.

Alicelucy9 · 13/09/2025 18:15

Maybe she's in Northern Ireland, that's the only place I've heard of that happening in the uk.

Flightsandfeelings · 13/09/2025 18:16

Peteryourhorseisheree · 13/09/2025 18:14

It really wouldn’t be outing, but I understand why you wouldn’t want to say.

I am half Indian and I’ve had abuse chucked at me all of my 46 years, on and off.

Am I scared though? Nope. And I live in an absolute dog box of a place.

I am sorry you're experiencing some awful things too. I really admire your courage frankly. Perhaps I'm 'new to this' as before being with DH it wasn't an issue for me as I am white.

Homes and cars are being set alight across certain areas NI, its happening years, the most racist place in Europe.
If they're not burning Catholics property, they're burning non nationals.

BlueFlowers5 · 13/09/2025 18:17

Racism including attacks on homes has not stopped and has always happened. The mainstream don't report it unless they do a documentary about it.
Sorry to hear you both are going through this OP. I hope things actively change.

fatphalange · 13/09/2025 18:17

I’m gobsmacked at this thread. So very many people emboldened in recent times. I never thought I’d see it here on MN

OP, I’m so sorry life is like this for you atm. I hope things in this country improve. Ignore provocative posters pretending they don’t know what you mean…the rest of us can see what they are doing. Flowers

How unusual. White person disagrees that racism is happening.

You're a visionary!

celticnations · 13/09/2025 18:18

@Flightsandfeelings

Are you in Northern Ireland?

If yes, then you have a problem I'm afraid. And I come from there.

Ultimately you may need to move especially if your home is identified.

I'm so sorry.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 13/09/2025 18:18

I'm shocked this isn't on mainstream media in England, aggressive thugs wrapped in UK flags.

Emori · 13/09/2025 18:18

Marylou2 · 13/09/2025 17:53

Exactly! I'm sure if this was happening then the BBC and the Guardian at least would be reporting it. Evidence please @mushroomsoupandcoke

A quick Google will tell you there have been racist arson attacks in, variously, Belfast, Tamworth, Rotherham, Sunderland over the past twelve months and multiple incidences of daytime violent assaults on minorities in these places plus Hull, Liverpool, Southport, York.

We can't pretend any longer. We have a growing fascist problem in the UK. Pandering to it, denying it, calling it other things, is emboldening them. We should have been clear and direct in our dialogues with the mouthpieces like Farage, Yaxley-Lennon etc years ago. We certainly shouldn't have given them a platform because now it's more difficult to challenge due to the shift in what is seen as acceptable discourse.

We can still pull it back but we have to first face the truth - that fascism exists, that it's dangerous for all of us and that we must challenge it. Not pussy foot around giving it "ooh everyone is entitled to their opinion, it's probably not that bad". It is that bad, and nobody is entitled to spread lies and rhetoric that encourage attacks on grounds of race.

Is this a veiled way of saying the OP's husband should go back to where he came from? How horrible.

Thank goodness someone else is reading what I'm reading and being shocked by it. I honestly never thought I'd see the likes of someone in fear being treated like this. A sad sign of the times.

A quick Google search comes up with different places. I linked this one but there was a place in August aswell.
Belfast, Northern Ireland, Gloucestershire,..

Love how people say it is not true unless OP says where. I found several articles about it in different areas of the UK

“I’m going to totally ignore the lived experiences of a section of the community, because it wasn’t reported on GBeebies News!”

Ahh, there’s nothing like a post on Mumsnet regarding race to bring all of the ignorant twats out.

ShatParp · 13/09/2025 18:22

@Flightsandfeelings does your husband drive OP? If so I know it's a faff and you shouldn't have to but could he drive to where he needs to get to, to avoid being out on the street?
