Political violence on the rise.

People are getting angry when people have Political views they don't agree with. Freedom of speech must be allowed not shutdown.

Tragic news of a young family man shot by someone today. Please remember he was a human with a family. Violence is never ok.

Have you read the constitution?

everyone is protected by the first amendment.

it is their right of course to refuse entry. But saying CK was not a nice person does not count as “violent or hateful views”.

I have.

If they are physically present in the county, yes. Applying for a visa, no. The government has broad discretion in visa issuance and immigration.

Well yes, because the constitution only applies within the US.

to refuse people entry because you don’t like their opinions kind of goes against the whole US ethos and being the most free country in the world though.

plus the irony of telling us in the UK we don’t have free speech and are oppressed by our government..

Well, yes, when the Supreme Court say it does.

The UK is arresting 30 people a day for disfavored speech, and over 12k in 2023. Lucy Connolly received a custodial prison sentence for a Facebook post. I don't see that happening here.

Lucy Connolly didn't receive a custodial sentence for 'a Facebook post'. I know you are in the US, but there is a LOT more to it than that. She's no martyr.

bumbaloo · 14/09/2025 18:45

reedom of speech is the right to express one's opinions and ideas without fear of government censorship, retaliation, or legal punishment

it doesn’t mean anything goes without consequences. There are many things you can not say without expecting consequences:

hate speech
slander
defamation
harassment
threats

Nope, never happens.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/may/18/facebook-comments-arrest-prosecution

one person arrested and jailed for threats to kill. The article cites more cases. That was 10 seconds of googling.

the uk arrests have no context. They will include the arrest of domestic abusers, for example, who have orders not to communicate with victims and then make contact or threaten over social media. Do you think those people shouldn’t be arrested and charged?

It will also include idiots who call the police saying they are being harassed- the fact most arrests do not lead to prosecution suggests may are malicious and nothing comes of it.

Jailed for a Facebook post: how US police target critics with arrest and prosecution

Felony case is part of what civil rights campaigners say is a disturbing trend of arresting users over innocuous political messages that constitute free speech

Absolutely correct.

And Father Ted creator, comedy writer Graham Linehan, an Irishman, was arrested at Heathrow Airport by five armed UK police for 3 tweets, posted while he was in the USA.

It has now been reported that he’s left Britain permanently to live in Arizona.

Good riddance. He is no martyr either. However you feel about trans people, relentlessly harrassing someone online is unacceptable. He'll fit very nicely in Trumps America.

Or the 1-2 million killed in the second Sudan War

It's quoting him, from video/audio where HE spoke, is everything you don't agree with just fake news to you people, does proof mean nothing? Your saviour CK was a piece of shit, too bad so sad.

When you’ve actually watched the full clips, come back to me.

I know you haven’t.

Nobody, but nobody has said that Charlie Kirk deserved to be murdered. Why are you trying to make out we have?

These numbers are shocking. I can’t remember any mainstream media horror or SM obsession and Middle class marches over any of these wars -are we saying there is some distinguishing feature here?

pointythings · 14/09/2025 22:37

Mmm I think plenty of people on SM have been saying exactly that.

DdraigGoch · 14/09/2025 22:48

MissConductUS · 14/09/2025 15:53

Non citizens are not protected by the first amendment and the US has no obligation to issues visas to people who espouse violent or hateful views.

"violent or hateful" seemingly includes anything which falls short of North Korean-style performative grief. Funny how the people most keen to dox people who said pretty tame things are the same people who were falling over themselves to gloat when Paul Pelosi was attacked with a hammer, or when Melissa Hortman was assassinated. "Freedom of speech for me and not for thee", it seems. They're also the same people keen to claim that people in the UK are getting imprisoned for "hurty words".

pointythings · 14/09/2025 22:51

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 14/09/2025 22:46

Of course they have. But not on this thread. Refusing to canonise Charlie Kirk does not equate to feeling he deserved what happened.

Social media is a toxic bearpit. How many people gleefully celebrated the murder of the two Democrat politicians who were shot 3 months ago? Answer: Loads. Weirdly, not nearly so many went online to complain about that. I wonder why?

DdraigGoch · 14/09/2025 22:54

MissConductUS · 14/09/2025 15:55

Lucy Connolly would agree, I'm sure.

Try ringing up your health insurer and saying "delay, deny, depose; you people are next" and see where that gets you.

hamstersarse · 14/09/2025 22:26

"full clip" is surely a contradiction in terms". It implies some kind of cutting or editing. I'd sooner see the full, unedited interactions from start to finish, not the ones cut to present CK in the best light.

1dayatatime · 15/09/2025 00:40

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 14/09/2025 22:45

Well two factors are at play here:

  1. For the hard core activists there are no Jews involved in the Sudan conflict
  2. And for the useful idiots, the conflict in Sudan isn't trending on social media right now.
JohnnyRememberMe · 16/09/2025 10:11

Is anyone really saying he's a saint?

Whatever his opinions, he didn't deserve to be assassinated.
