Upset about new top

BykeP · 06/09/2025 13:57

I bought what I thought was a lovely new top, it’s black, fluffy and sleeveless. DH thinks I look like Betty Rubble from the Flintstones and keeps saying Yabba Dabba Do every time I enter the room.

I don’t think this is funny but he won’t stop laughing. I said he is offending me and I find his comments hurtful but he said it’s too funny to stop.

I refuse to change my top but I think he is unreasonable? I can’t listen to Yabba Dabba Do anymore or be called Betty

Still haven’t seen a photo of the fluffy top 😕

Does it really matter what the top looks like? I swear people on here have the maturity of eight year olds (that's me being generous!)

Thisismetooaswell · 07/09/2025 08:03

I honestly can't believe the things some people get upset about

Ive read you say this on another thread and was trying to remember it, thanks for the reminder, it cracked me up all over again.

Hahaha

I was once hoovering up while wearing a skirt and high-ish heels and he told me I looked like Freddie mercury in the 'I want to break free' video

'With that skirt, heels and your tash love, your a dead ringer for him!'

pictoosh · 07/09/2025 09:10

There's nothing amiss about a bit of piss-taking if everyone's on board and enjoying the banter. We do it in our house...our family mealtimes can be quite raucous.

When the subject makes it clear they're hurt or embarrassed and you keep going...YOU are the problem.

if this thread, is not stimulating enough for your superior intellect ( which is the impression you are attempting to make quite frankly) then why bother to read it and post snippy little remarks ? Just move on/ignore

It's a public thread and I'll post as I please. People seem to feel free to call out the OP and tell her she is being pathetic, so why shouldn't I offer my opinion as well? Which is that the level of humour of many posters is fairly infantile.

pictoosh · 07/09/2025 10:27

Tbh, I'm baffled as to why so many posters have found this hilarious too.
That's not a superior intellect grab (believe me) it's just not that funny. 🤷‍♀️

Yes, heaven forbid people have a bit of fun and don't act like stuck up bores the entire time.

Surely you can't find it that "baffling" that different people find different things funny?

No...but personally speaking, I think pointing and laughing at other people's clothes is in poor taste to begin with, never mind keeping on with it.

IsItWickedNotToCare · 07/09/2025 10:41

My husband thinks it's hilarious to say 'hallo, sailor' every time I wear a stripy top. I just ignore him 🙄

Exactly. The poster's son who said 'OK Steve Jobs' was quite funny, I thought. It was a quick, throwaway remark which gave me a brief chuckle (although not to the extent that I 'spluttered my tea' or did any of the hyperbolic reactions of most mumsnetters) However, the Betty Rubble and Coco Clown comments were just a bit dumb, especially after they'd been repeated ad nasueam.

I guess I just don't see it as "pointing and laughing" to have a joke with your partner and tell them they look a bit daft in a certain outfit.

I do think keeping on with it can be a bit tiring - but this thread is clearly divided between people who think this is nasty, bullying behaviour and those of us who see it in a bit more of a light-hearted way.

That sounds tedious. Not that funny the first time, let alone the nth time. I'm really glad that my DH appreciates style and fashion, even though he isn't into clothes himself.

Personally, I don't really fall into either camp. I don't necessarily think it's 'bullying'. I just think it's a bit simple minded. I couldn't be with someone with such a basic sense of humour.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 07/09/2025 10:47

My DH bought a new pair of shoes for a wedding and I nearly died laughing because he looked like Neil Patrick Harris Olaf in a series of unfortunate events and my sister said they looked like the shoes Simon swapped with homeless man in the inbetweeners

we all laughed heartily

my DH looked very handsome when he had the whole attire on though and humour is a huge part of our marriage

pictoosh · 07/09/2025 10:48

Honestly, I'm on the fence on this issue because I liked the 'Steve Jobs' comment too. That was witty and well-placed and not laboured. Funny is funny.

Labouring the point because you enjoy seeing your subject squirm is shitty.

Agree with this as well.
It's basic, that's all.

Eta: Am genuinely surprised it was so lauded on mumsnet.

I'm not all that surprised. A lot of people on this site are very, very easily amused. I remember a thread a few months ago where someone posted because their friend had expected them to pay for a takeaway because said friend didn't fancy what they were cooking. The poster autocorrected the 'spaghetti carbonara' which she'd been planning to serve with 'spaghetti in a tyre'. People would.not.let.it.go. It was pointless reading the rest of the thread because people were too busy 'falling over laughing' at the 'hilarious' typo. I genuinely wouldn't have laughed so much at a simple mistake when I was a child of seven.

I think sometimes it's fine to laugh at the silly things. It makes it easier to deal with the big things if you can laugh at the stuff that doesn't matter, IMO.

Hairshare · 07/09/2025 11:04

It must be tedious and irritating for DH to keep repeating this 'joke'. I wouldn't like it. Don't think it's LTB territory though.

It's fine to have a laugh. However, I don't see the OP's husband's joke as funny.
