AIBU to say it isn't unexpected, or a surprise?

She is also, alas, just not intelligent or credible enough to be the Deputy Prime Minister

This, she just comes across as not very good at understanding things and thinking things through (and that is NOT prejudice because she's working-class - plenty of WC politicians have been/are intelligent and astute). That and the constant somewhat suspect-seeming dealings that have finally come back to bite her on the arse and weren't actually just misogyny and classism after all.

Unfortunately Lammy's hardly any better in the nous department. (Love Dead Ringers version of Lammy, it's so spot on.)

I'm constant flabbergasted at how this Labour government have not prioritised rooting out corruption and freebie-bagging and giving the general appearance of being on the take - surely that is just a mindblowingly obvious way to be different from the previous government and gain people's trust?

They are obsessed with process eg when defending buying of clothes for Lady Starmer 'We haven't broken any rules'. Yes, but it's a terrible look for a man earning £150,000 not to buy his wife clothes or for her to buy her own as she works too. They seem incapable of taking a step back and viewing themselves objectively.

‘Jeremy Hunt received a “bulk discount” on seven flats bought from a Conservative donor, the Guardian can disclose, as parliament’s watchdog opened an investigation into the health secretary’s admission that he breached money laundering rules.
The health secretary was forced to apologise for failing to declare his part-ownership of a company, which bought the luxury seaside flats in Southampton.’

Edited

That relates to the failure to declare a company, not SDLT on a property purchase. I was answering the point regarding his using a loophole to avoid the tax.

The Guardian published one opinion. Other teachers had other opinions, which they didn't print.

1 “foreign” isn't a race. His partner is a foreigner.
2 Corbyn considered Gerry Adams and Hezbollah his friends; does that make him a terrorist? Abbott is consistently anti-white. We have MPs who are more concerned with politics in Gaza than the UK. Is it bad that a politician wants to prevent forced diversity through high immigration, given that politicians around the world largely have that aim?
3 It’s an actual photo. What can be positively spun about the actual photo? Would a different caption have helped, or do you just think that the proles shouldn’t see actual footage of issues?
4 No idea about wither of those, sorry, but given the current administration’s anti-Israel stance are they any better?

Is there a difference between nationalism and racism? Most countries (other than some in the EU) are primarily nationalist. Many countries which are considered stable and successful, such as Japan, Norway, Finland, Iceland, are quite nationalistic first.

People can't see what they don't want to see.

Whoever is in charge of PR at LabourHQ needs to resign THAT’S for sure. Bring back Alistair C!

@usernamealreadytaken SDLT levels changed in 2016, Hunt bought 7 flats in 2018, taking adv of the 6 flats rule introduced in 2016....

Prior to this, he would have paid an extra 100k in tax..... nothing i wrote is wrong but you are.

The levels changed but the underlying law which applied didn’t. The initial report mistakenly assumed his low payment of SDLT was due to some “Tory loophole”, when actually it related to the Finance Act 2003 definition of residential and commercial property.

Her children live with her ex husband in Manchester. She lives in London with a married man. Or she did. They probably live in Hove now!

Her boyfriend’s ex wife (until Ange) lives in Hove, I read, so he lives nearby to see the children. So she’s bought there too… classy. Wonder if the rumours she is rich are true, or if she’ll have to sell up now

If only she had gone to the proper schools.
Stay in your lane, peasants of MN, leave the grifting to your betters.

The “proper” schools have nothing to do with it. Paying attention at any school would probably have helped.

And when the media finally publishes the truth about Farage

How likely is that?

What has AR's personal life got to do with anything? Curry and Major shagging during lunch breaks? Mr Johnsone, doesn't know how many kids he's got? Matt Hancock? Nice classy.

I feel sorry for her.

I can well believe and understand why she’d have set up that trust and nesting arrangement to benefit her disabled child. Personally I think it was an error, that she intended to rectify.

She shouldn’t have felt the need to betray his privacy by telling everyone those circumstances. Her children and her divorce are her business, they’re not public matter, and it’s disgusting she even had to tell us all the details.

Spray painting the property, and the media taking pictures of her kids; is bang out of order, whatever she’s done and whatever you believe her intentions were. It’s harassment, and it’s vile.

She said over and above anything else, she’s a mother first. Surely that resonates here. The way her family, and the privacy of her disabled teenager, has been handled and treated is nothing short of disgusting.

This country sometimes needs to have a stern word with itself.

There’s nothing wrong with the Trust arrangement, or indeed with her and her ex husband selling part or all of their shares of the adapted house to the Trust providing their son with certainty of accommodation for the rest of his life.

The only reason we know about it in this detail is because Rayner used the Trusts existence to create a narrative that her tax affairs were very complicated, and that she hadn’t done anything wrong.

I think she’s absolutely done the right thing for her son. I think she was reckless to ignore the advice given to her in writing to seek proper tax advice. And I think she is despicable for dragging her son in to try and create a cover for her mistake to save her skin. There was no need to do that. It’s unfair on the child and the family

AFAIK her ex-husband hasn't sold his share to the trust; they each put 25% in trust as part of the divorce settlement and retained 25%. Ange “sold” her share to the trust for the benefit of her disabled son to free up the cash to move a flat (does it have disabled access/modifiactions?) 300 miles away with her new boyfriend.

@Judashascomeintosomemoney

Farage is "probably racist"? Probably?????

No need to @ me. And, yeah, 'probably' because I didn't want a billion notifications of people telling he wasn't racist and to 'prove it'. Instead I've got the notifications from the other 'side'. But I don't necessarily disagree with the sentiment.
Anyway, any comment on the rest of the post??

What does he say? That he wants to put British people first and foremost? That he wants British tax money spent on British people before anybody else? How bloody awful!

I agree. Bar the bit where she uses the Trust Fund to buy her ‘share’ of the martial home from her disabled son. Who sells their share of a house to their child at what seems to be an inflated price so that she can live with her boyfriend 100’s of miles away?

She has admitted her tax affairs were complex so why ignore two pieces of advice to not get expert counsel? She was the Housing Minister ffs!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 05/09/2025 19:27

TheWonderhorse · 05/09/2025 14:53

She did get advice. Just not good enough advice.

Whether it was good, or not, is irrelevant. She has admitted she didn't follow it.

cardibach · 05/09/2025 15:42

Except she didn’t lie. That’s very clear in t(e report. She just failed to get extra specialist advice, which had been recommended by her solicitors. It’s clear she was open about the situation throughout, and she had it in writing that she didn’t need to pay more than she did - with a caveat that she should get specialist advice to check. She didn’t do that, which was stupid. But it isn’t lying, or cheating.

She lied to her conveyancer by saying that the new flat was her main home.

ajandjjmum · 05/09/2025 19:33

cardibach · 05/09/2025 16:29

Nobody has ever suggested otherwise.
What I’m trying to suggest, and I realise that in the current political climate (and on MN) this is a losing battle, is that there’s some nuance. We don’t have to scream ‘liar’ when someone makes a mistake. We can understand that she’s not a legal expert and she thought she was taking the relevant advice but made an error in not checking the advice (as advised).

If she hadn't been the first one screaming when someone else made a mistake, maybe she'd have been shown more consideration herself.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 05/09/2025 19:36

WitchesCauldron · 05/09/2025 15:56

If we'd listened to a lot of people re Brexit the country would be a lot richer. It's not as if Lammy was the sole voice of reason.

The man is a buffoon. I wouldn't give him too much credit for his views on Brexit. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Indeed. And If the country had listened to Rishi Sunak before the election it wouldn’t have been surprised by the huge tax rises in the last budget ;)

Yep that too. No MPs could defend her either as they tried to the day before Verrico responded.
