AIBU to say it isn't unexpected, or a surprise?

Yeah. And if you don't like those he has others.... BadumTish.

That’s a bit Starmer isn’t it

KhakiTiger · 05/09/2025 19:38

Labour government.

Anti corruption minister resigns because of….corruption.
Anti homeless minister resigns because of…..making tenants homeless.
Housing minister resigns for…..not paying house tax.
Transport minister resigns for….fraudulent insurance claims. Damn, she really let the side down. She should have stolen some trains or something.

This is Streeting before the conveyancer based on Rayner’s take

‘It turns out she was badly advised, but understandably she’s followed the advice in good faith.’

That isn’t true.

Yes, and this another aspect I am particularly fucked off about. In the last few days, more than one Labour MP and/or Minister has been trotted out on either breakfast TV or Politics Live etc and has repeated this lie.
Did they believe it or were they instructed they had no choice but to repeat it? Because, if I was them (and Wes Streeting in particular, who I have no doubt will want to stand for leader at some point) I would not just be fuming, I would be stating to the leadership that I wanted the record set straight as to why I said that.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 05/09/2025 19:45

cardibach · 05/09/2025 16:13

She got advice which turned out to be inaccurate. I’m with you that she should have followed the additional advice to get another piece of advice, but it’s really pushing it to say it was a lie to say the advice she had was wrong/bad.

The advice was perfectly accurate according the investigation. It said that she needed to take specialist tax advice, but she didn’t, Then, when asked if she’d taken advice on the SDLT she said she had. That would appear to be a deliberate lie, and misstatement of the facts.

For her then to try and throw a small, high street firm of conveyancers under the bus to save her skin is also very shoddy behaviour, unbefitting of anyone, never mind a public servant elected under a mandate of ‘doing the right thing’.

Good for both advisors implicated coming out swiftly, clearly and firmly in putting the record straight, and in the process exposing just how dirty she was prepared to play to hang on to a job.

Thank you, yes exactly this.

Exactly

Exactly? Exactly what?
That isn't illegal.
Unlike not paying Stamp Duty that is due.
I don't give a fuck about the colour of the rosette, but I seriously worry about the future of the country if this is the level of intelligence of the electorate.

Yep! And your next exactly what post.

I reckon they all said no way to bring wheeled out lying some more after Verrico and Shoosmiths put out statements.

I’m not sure what is authentic about a pro high taxation tax avoider and a supposedly left wing politician with multiple homes. Do her principles only apply to other people and their money. When it comes to her own wealth, she is less keen to share that.

Exactly. But really this sums up the situation in the UK. Amazing how many people think high earners should be happy pay more (and more) and get less.
It’s SO easy to give away other peoples money 🤷‍♀️

What does he say? That he wants to put British people first and foremost? That he wants British tax money spent on British people before anybody else? How bloody awful!

nice idea but who is a British person?

Like it overwhelmingly is now, you mean?
Asylum hotel funding comes from the Overseas Aid budget, which is less than 0.7% of GDP.

Fraudornot · 05/09/2025 20:51

@Tryingtokeepgoingbut couldn’t they have given the house to their son without taken money out of his payment as compensation? To me it looks like they have used his money for their own material gain. They values the house at £650k - just under what would put it into IHT calculations. It all seems very calculated and knowledgeable about taxes which makes it all the more unbelievable that she didn’t think she needed to look into stamp duty more. It all smells off

oakashandelm · 05/09/2025 20:56

Clafoutie · 05/09/2025 18:43

Do we only worry about the values of politicians when they are in government? Or only the ones we like/dislike? Then there’s others who say “they’re all the same”. Lots of mixed messages on this thread!

Is it really true that she took money from her disabled son’s trust fund. And then left him behind to go live with her boyfriend hundreds of miles away. If so, that’s beyond disgusting.

Arraminta · 05/09/2025 21:16

So relieved. I found her general ignorance, lack of education, poor grammar and limited vocabulary so embarrassing. God knows what the highly educated, erudite, articulate overseas politicians thought of her whenever they met.

She wasn’t the Foreign Minister so I doubt she came into contact with many. Most people who meet her say she’s highly intelligent, quick witted, astute and authentic. She can hold her own in parliamentary debate and leave her opponent standing. Apparently the King is very taken with her.

Realitycheck1 · 05/09/2025 21:22

@Tryingtokeepgoing absolutey!

She's been totally exposed I don't know how posters are still defending her

Edited

Not sure that asylum seekers are the only financial drain which could be better spent domestically. And the spend on asylum seekers may only be a small percentage of GDP, but imagine what an extra £5bn (plus after-spend) could do for education, or potholes, or roads, or many other issues.
