So I have some concerns about my DS’s health, I have done an e-consult to the GP awaiting a reply. So over the holidays i’ve been noticing frequent urination, thirst during the night, getting up to pee during the night which he never used to, verrucas on his feet that wont budge and nausea. I am concerned about diabetes. I have been working alot over the summer and have told relevant babysitters of my concerns. I informed MIL to cut back on sweets/cakes/no fizzy drinks etc, which in all fairness she seemed very concerned and said “yes well youll have to watch his diet” I went to pick DS up after work yesterday, to see a bottle of fanta in front of him, 2 large slabs of cake on his plate, and MIL forcing another one down him! I reminded her of our conversation and her response was “he will have what he likes here!” I have had a number of conversations with her before this about the amount of cakes/pop etc she gives them, she agrees to my face, but I always turn up to find fizzy drinks/ sweets in excess in front of DS! I am fairly laid back about this sort of thing, fizzy drinks is a treat only and sweet stuff all in moderation. I feel so angry at mil for disregarding DS’s health. Luckily DS is back in school so no need to be in MIL’s care.

You are doing absolutely the right thing, and I hope he will be ok. And there is absolutely no problem with having a rant about MIL on here, you are quite right.

Bontasha · 06/09/2025 21:25

My Mum is the same, she is luckily on a diet herself now so less treats lying about. As soon as my kids were old enough they politely declined offers of excess sweets.

I think your sons health issues aside - your mother in law sounds incredibly disrespectful and instead of working with you and being supportive, she’s being a complete cow.

I would include her in less and less.

YANBU. For a child with suspected diabetes - what is she trying to do? Kill him? Children that young shouldn't be having any fizzy drinks at all.

Don't leave him in her care again until you have an answer re: his general health, and even then, I wouldn't trust her. She's ignorant and dishonest.

Edited

Where does it say how old he is?

He's 'back to school', so presumably at least 5 & probably under 14 (needing babysitters in the holidays)

so??

I think fizzy drinks are a 'very occasional'thing for kids IF they ask for them, but why are you saying he shouldn't be having ANY at that age??

@Autumnscoming1 I'd find other care for him whether he has diabetes or not. No way would he be going there alone again.

i know it's hard £££ in the summer holidays, but I'd find a way.

I'm diabetic. It's scary when it's your child, but if he is (hopefully not!!) it will be OK XX

The GP has refused to test my youngest granddaughter. She has every symptom and constantly smells 'sweet', but we've been refused and even when going through A&E (she has a ridiculously low immune system) they haven't/won't test her.

Why???

it's easy enough to buy a monitor & strips yourself. So ud do that immediately. But WHY are they refusing to test her

If your MiL is forcing a slice of cake on your child with another 2 'huge slabs' on his plate presumably awaiting further forcing, then she is clearly unwell herself, and shouldn't be caring for a child, regardless of whether the child has a medical condition.

This is a good point & well worth repeating (even days later!!)

They haven't given a reason. The GP refused and when we've attended A&E (she has other health issues/low immune system) because the GP didn't think a referral was needed, they haven't tested. She's had pneumonia and sepsis, was in hospital for around a week, so needed bloods, but no joy. We've tested at home and it's shown changing glucose levels. We go through A&E at least four times a year. She has some LD's, mobility conditions and moderate hearing loss. There's been nothing but neglect, blamed on Covid.

oh poor wee dot!

even if they don't think it's a problem. Why not test when they're doing bloods anyway. As far as tests go, it's cheap for them, even if they're just doing it to satisfy you, rather than because they're think it's necessary.

it's awful that there's been neglect!!

my own experience (re my stroke) has been pretty poor, but for a child it's just unforgivable. Sending lots of strength & love xx

Glucose levels change for everyone, it's how they work. I'd be looking for sustained highs after eating--if it doesn't come down after 2 hours it's significant or if it is always high, it's also significant.

It's absolutely ridiculous to refuse to do glucose or HBa1C, I hope someone listens to you soon.

The slightly reassuring thing is if she had T1 diabetes it would eventually make itself known and if she’s been unwell for a while would probably have made itself known by now.

I wonder how they got on.
