To think MN posts should show the age bracket of the poster?

I think it would be really useful if the age bracket of each poster was included next to their username, e.g. WhiteNoiseBlur (35-45). Just so people’s opinions could be put slightly into context! What do you think?

No.
Surely everyone's opinion is valid, regardless of age.

Do you think we should have ethnicity as well?

Maddy70 · 03/09/2025 06:12

Why the ageism? It's good to have opinions from a wide spectrum. My friendship group reflects that, my closest friends range from 24 to 85 I value all their opinions (they actually don't differ that much,!)

Aweekoffwork · 03/09/2025 06:12

A nice idea, I tend to have a lot more in common with much older contributors ☺️

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/09/2025 06:12

I think it's an absolutely appalling idea! Perhaps you'd like it to say our sexual and political preferences too, and then just block anybody who doesn't fit the tiny bracket of people you deem to be 'into context' with you?

Orchidflower1 · 03/09/2025 06:15

🙄

Meadowfinch · 03/09/2025 06:15

Why would that be useful?

Are you implying that someone's opinions are less valid if they are older? Or younger? Should we also flag those suffering from baby brain? Or those who have degrees and those who don't? How about those born in the UK and those born elsewhere?

Your suggestion is the definition of discriminatory.

MiddleAgeRageMonster · 03/09/2025 06:16

Why? Do you only believe opinions of those aged 35-45 are valuable?
That's how people end up living in an echo chamber never hearing views different to their own.

BlueJuniper94 · 03/09/2025 06:17

I'd rather see their economic status

charlieandjenna · 03/09/2025 06:17

I understand your reasoning but generally speaking no I don’t think that would be a good idea. If my comments ever need an age context, ie my child is fully grown ect then I’ll add that in my comment myself

SoScarletItWas · 03/09/2025 06:18

What you call context is surely just stereotyping? ‘All 40 year olds think this and have this life experience.’

I’ve seen posters include their age in replies if it seems relevant anyway.

WeregoingtoIbiza · 03/09/2025 06:19

I assume you’re thinking that people’s advice may differ if they knew the age of the op. I have seen a few posts where people have asked how old the op is, mainly on the relationship board

i don’t know why else you’d need to know. .

Imagineallthepuppies · 03/09/2025 06:19

Political beliefs would be helpful.
Maybe social class and level of education too?

Slightyamusedandsilly · 03/09/2025 06:19

In that case, let's have the whole demographic.
Pronouns
Ethnicity
Location
Economic status
Class

TheSummerof25 · 03/09/2025 06:20

I don’t agree that age alone is the most significant characteristic of a poster.

ChaToilLeam · 03/09/2025 06:20

Star sign and shoe size please

Redglitter · 03/09/2025 06:21

I cant see a single reason why that would be beneficial

GarlicPint · 03/09/2025 06:21

No, yeah, it's a brilliant idea to know what kind of people we're interacting anonymously with. Age, sex, location, ethnicity, social class & income group for starters. That way we can apply all of our preconceptions before deciding whether to bother with them and their irrelevant opinions, as they obviously know nothing and are probably to blame for whichever of life's ills are bothering us today.

Go for it, OP! Post your forum improvement on Site Stuff. In fact, MNHQ should start all different forums for each grouping and run identity checks to determine which ones each member can comment on. Why should anyone have to suffer the viewpoints of stupid twits who can't possibly know anything about life for people who aren't exactly like them? As if!

WhiteNoiseBlur · 03/09/2025 06:21

i just think it would be interesting! When I read a post, more often than not I wonder how old that poster is. I don’t tend to wonder about their ethnicity or location or anything like that. For example there was a post the other day about some shoes - the poster was wondering if they were ugly/frumpy etc. For a 20 year old, they were pretty frumpy. For a 65 year old, not so much. That’s just a silly for instance that I’ll get piled on for but..I’m just interested!

Does that mean we will all have to submit a certified copy of our birth certificate?

Or could I just lie and say I am 18.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 03/09/2025 06:22

Great idea. Also add sex, preferred pronouns, ethnicity, social class, income, voting history (and intention next time), nationality, sexuality and location.

Or maybe not bother.

Well, yeah, that is a pretty silly f'rinstance. Is there a special reason you couldn't have replied "They're frumpy for a 20 year old, not so much for a 65 year old"?

LillyPJ · 03/09/2025 06:24

There's enough ageism already without encouraging it.

PollyBell · 03/09/2025 06:25

I dont think biological age and posting style means anything on here, i thinl there is a 'naivety' of some poster's that make age irrelevant to be perfectly honest

The concept of 'frumpy' is misogynistic nonsense. The word belongs in the past.

Anyone of any age can wear what they like.

Apologies - I forgot to add academic qualifications, working status, and housing situation (mortgage, private rented, social housing, owned, plus of course the amount of equity.)
And most importantly - cat or dog?

Actually everyone should just put in a CV.
