To think MN posts should show the age bracket of the poster?

I think it would be really useful if the age bracket of each poster was included next to their username, e.g. WhiteNoiseBlur (35-45). Just so people’s opinions could be put slightly into context! What do you think?

OP posts:
CoubousAndTourmaIet · 03/09/2025 07:12

Don't forget the loo brush tick box.

YelloDaisy · 03/09/2025 07:12

The ones who are under 20 will lie about their age, boomers like me will lie about their age -unworkable

Stoufer · 03/09/2025 07:12

Redglitter · 03/09/2025 06:21

I cant see a single reason why that would be beneficial

I can - from MN (& others’) point of view! It would provide fantastic data to be ‘mined’, and when combining with engagement on those “how much is your house worth?” and “is this an average salary?” -type threads, would enable really detailed profiles to be built (around your username) of socio-economic bracket / views / preferences / marital status / number of kids / approx geographic location etc etc..!!

Don’t mind me - I am just getting a bit cynical in my old age (50-55) (!)….

But I do sometimes see various threads (like the ones I mention above), and often wonder whether they are introduced as a data-sifting exercise…?

TaborlinTheGreat · 03/09/2025 07:15

Completely unnecessary. OPs give you the information they think you need to know in order to comment on their post. If you want to know their age becauseyou think it'srelevant,, ask them (if you must). MN automatically including posters' ages on posts would be ridiculously intrusive.

Morningswim · 03/09/2025 07:16

Clearly not, in reality,. because it would be problematic for all sorts of reasons

But I do get what you mean.Particularly when it comes to things like how easy someone found it to save up to buy a house (or what their mortgage costs are now). My dad was horrified the other day because his council tax is now "higher than a mortgage payment would be" . I nearly died laughing.

CallMeMessy · 03/09/2025 07:17

I am older and wiser than a lot of mumsnetters, but no! Of course not. Age isn’t always a factor. And some people are bigoted/thick/set in their ways/ have bias etc regardless of their age…

Back to those days 🤣🤣

No. That is so dumb.

i just think it would be interesting! When I read a post, more often than not I wonder how old that poster is. I don’t tend to wonder about their ethnicity or location or anything like that. For example there was a post the other day about some shoes - the poster was wondering if they were ugly/frumpy etc. For a 20 year old, they were pretty frumpy. For a 65 year old, not so much. That’s just a silly for instance that I’ll get piled on for but..I’m just interested!

Well I’d expect they were actually frumpy for the 65 year old too, you just expect a 65 year old to dress frumpily so deem them okay for that bracket.

My mum is 65 and would absolutely not be caught dead in anything that would be frumpy for a 20 year old…

Oh my! Is the toaster storage place controversial?

What about do you have a toilet brush?

Threepeaks2025 · 03/09/2025 07:23

People don’t need to tell the truth on an anonymous forum.

It's funny, isn't it, how to all of us, when we are young, think 65 is old! And yet when we reach 65, we're really not old!

My neighbour wears wonderfully young clothes and shoes, goes running, uses tech better than me and is 70.

And yet young people would call her old !

Bogpinkbear · 03/09/2025 07:24

That would increase ageism both ways and really would not be a good idea.

PuppyMonkey · 03/09/2025 07:26

At what age is it socially acceptable to start wearing frumpy shoes? That is the big question here.

Yours sincerely,

Bogpinkbear · 03/09/2025 07:27

I’ve had to wear “frumpy” shoes since an accident in my 20s.

i hate the word frumpy. It’s horrible. Sexist and ageist.

Oh it’s because you don’t want to talk to frumpy old people? Of course!

I fucking hate the word frumpy. It’s ageist and misogynistic in one fell swoop.

nomas · 03/09/2025 07:30

It would be interesting. I’d guess that 80% of AIBU posters are 65+.

What about do you have a toilet brush?

And how often you wash your teatowels, and change bedsheets

Wildfairy · 03/09/2025 07:36

I think it would be helpful on the style and beauty board, as some of the recommendations do make me wonder what sort of person would recommend that snd what their age range is. I’m in my 50s and some of the stuff recommended even my nan wouldn’t wear.

Nah ... 😄

Hearty applause for your namechange ✅💯😂

sundayfundayclub · 03/09/2025 07:37

Yes, personally I think the average age is a lot higher than the media image exists eg it's not a mum in her in 30s with small dc but a late 50s women with older dc.

Nothing particularly wrong with that but I think it does explain some of the threads/posts.

Why the ageism? It's good to have opinions from a wide spectrum.

Isn't that the point of the OP? How many young people are on here?

allusernamesaretakennow · 03/09/2025 07:39

cryinglaughing · 03/09/2025 06:08

No.
Surely everyone's opinion is valid, regardless of age.

Do you think we should have ethnicity as well?

This.

Age not required.

Absolutely not. Would be weaponised.
Would be interesting though. I would guess that most of the more prolific posters are 55+.
