To think MN posts should show the age bracket of the poster?

I think it would be really useful if the age bracket of each poster was included next to their username, e.g. WhiteNoiseBlur (35-45). Just so people’s opinions could be put slightly into context! What do you think?

OP posts:
CurlewKate · 03/09/2025 08:16

Yes-then people could safely disregard any posts by people over 60. That would be good.

Bogpinkbear · 03/09/2025 08:16

WhiteNoiseBlur · 03/09/2025 08:11

Did I say I couldn’t see any issues with it? Of course I can see why it’s controversial. I can see why people wouldn’t want it shared. All I’m saying is…it would be interesting! That’s it! Don’t shoot me

So you can judge old, disabled, female people for their frumpy shoes?

Newsenmum · 03/09/2025 08:17

Let’s also put our race and income so we can decide what to think about them before we all pile on.

Account734 · 03/09/2025 08:17

No, I hate the idea. It sounds like you are planning to disregarding the opinions of certain age ranges.

CoffeeCantata · 03/09/2025 08:22

SoScarletItWas · 03/09/2025 06:18

What you call context is surely just stereotyping? ‘All 40 year olds think this and have this life experience.’

I’ve seen posters include their age in replies if it seems relevant anyway.

I think showing an age bracket would just give some pps an excuse to dismiss some viewpoints, or to have a go at them based on personal prejudice.

RememberBeKindWithKaren · 03/09/2025 08:28

Nope. People can disclose as much or as little personal info as they want.

HisNibs · 03/09/2025 08:42

OP, you're making quite an assumption that people are honest when they create their online accounts. I know for a fact that some people lie about their age on their facebook/instagram/snapchat accounts, why would MN be any different? Not sure that I would be prepared to hand over my birth certificate/passport/driving licence details over to some anonymous forum to prove my age...

ChaToilLeam · 03/09/2025 06:20

Star sign and shoe size please

Haha 😂

GAJLY · 03/09/2025 08:44

This is an anonymous forum, why on earth would posters want to give real life clues as to who they are?! People will just make it up! I know I would if it was required, I'd be an 88 year old! 🤣

the3robbers · 03/09/2025 08:46

There used to be photos on people's profiles.

I can't see the value in adding people's personal details - it's not a dating app.

Pointless.

I’ve met very sensible, wise people who are in their 20s.

I’ve met absolute idiots who are in their 60s.

I’m not sure what “context” it’s providing.

sundayfundayclub · 03/09/2025 09:39

@ARandomWomanAge45to55

but is it wrong that sometimes people want to hear more recent experience that may be more relevant to them?

I don't personally like Reddit but also don't like instagram, I would like to hear more younger voices on MNs just for more balance.

sundayfundayclub · 03/09/2025 09:44

@MidnightPatrol yes baby name threads always seem to representative of todays world

I knew that would be a terrible example. I’m just saying if you are asking for advice on weaning, say, or sleep training, or something - it might be helpful to know which decade a person’s experience was coming from.

I’m 61 and I have raised 5 children, not all mine so have experienced child birth, step parenting and child grieve so feel I have a range of experiences

but when I give advice I always say my advice is maybe out of date but what I did was ….. I also will perhaps add my DIL’S do such and such implying that the advice is more current.

i don’t mine giving my age, my nationality or my shoe size, I do object to people asking my finances. —- but I don’t feel any of that relevant in the majority of posts, so no I don’t see the need for age at the head of posts,

Hoppinggreen · 03/09/2025 09:56

I vote for putting Bra and shoe size on too

gotmyknickersinatwist · 03/09/2025 09:57

Posters add their age in their own posts if they think it's relevant or adds context.
Thus, it should be.
Besides, what's to stop someone selecting a different age bracket? Unless you think MN should automate that option based on birth date option at sign up.

It's a thoroughly crap idea.

stayathomer · 03/09/2025 09:59

I could see it helping, eg there’s a retirement thread at the moment and everyone is saying the op is rich because of what she’s asking could she live on if she retired. I’d agree it’s a huge amount but then at the same time I think someone in their 20s 30s or 40s probably doesn’t get the extra costs you accumulate at that age (my mum regularly has to pay for health issues and her home is now falling apart)

Also for style and beauty a 20 year old and 50 year old has totally different issues!

What’s to stop someone writing a post that’s utter bullshit? You just have to take some things on trust. But anyway. Nobody wants to say what decade they’re from. All good - was just a pondering

I totally judge people by their taste in music. Can we have favourite bands/songs at the bottom?
(Los Del Rio/Macarena 😂)

My friend is almost 65 and used to work in the costume dept of the BBC, another is 59 and was a fashion designer that won a major award. I will enjoy telling them your little tale about shoes and what is ok to wear depending on age so I can listen to their righteous outrage.

Great idea, from Hoppinggreen
Age band 45-50
36DD size 6 shoe
Eclectic music taste but mostly Travis Scott and Chapel Roan in the car right now (thanks to DS and Leedsfest)
Sagitarius but on the cusp

Tbf, even if you set up a profile and it asks you for your age bracket, you can just lie.

See this is why we don't need age brackets. Contextual clues. Hang around for a while and you'll soon suss everyone out anyway.
