To think MN posts should show the age bracket of the poster?

I think it would be really useful if the age bracket of each poster was included next to their username, e.g. WhiteNoiseBlur (35-45). Just so people’s opinions could be put slightly into context! What do you think?

I’m a bit taken aback by the responses here. I don’t post that often. It was meant to be a lighthearted thought - I did not write to Mumsnet HQ and insist it become mandatory. Mumsnet is supposed to be a place to share thoughts and opinions..I think the answers here are very “strong” in their wording, quite unkind, and with little thought to the person behind the post. Whatever age you are, if you’ve told me I’ve got shit ideas, that I’m ageist, horrible, that you hope I don’t have a certain type of job because of what I’ve said - then I hope you take a minute to reflect. Good job this site is as anonymous as it is - you can all carry on being malicious and thoughtless with no consequences.

I'm surprised, too. I think you have a point and I'm often curious, especially when it would be relevant to the discussion.

Sorry you've had such a rough time of it here, Mumsnet at its not-so-finest 😬

Yes. But it was a reasonably light hearted suggestion?! Blimey

Was it?

Yes?! What power do you think I have to implement changes to this website? 😂
Side note - why are people so embarrassed by their age? Are you afraid to say you’re 18? 35? 65? Do you think so little of your lovely fellow Mumsnetters that they would judge your opinion on your age? I stand by the opinion that a rough age indication really complements a post.

Well, yeah, that is a pretty silly f'rinstance. Is there a special reason you couldn't have replied "They're frumpy for a 20 year old, not so much for a 65 year old"?

Even shoes have ages?

If it's relevant on a thread, I will say how old I am.

If it's not, I don't.

Anonymouseposter · 06/09/2025 20:49

In response to OP's last post, Yes, I do think that a substantial minority of MNers would dismiss someone's opinion based on their age.

Not in my view, but OP's entitled to say so.

Well, why are we all wasting our time pouring our hearts out to such a judgemental group of bitches then? Why are we sharing our thoughts with people who will judge us based on our age? What a shame that this isn’t an all-inclusive forum for women who support women of all ages.

I wish it was but from reading threads (especially on AIBU) there are a lot of comments that are dismissive of younger posters and even more negative assumptions about "boomers". I do mention my age sometimes when I think it might be relevant.

You've posted here a fair bit, so it can hardly be a devastating blow to find that the 8 million (approx) women you can interact with on MN are as varied as any other large group of humans.

If you want some place where all females feel obliged to #BeKind, go find one. This is traditionally where I'd say Nethuns is -> that way, but it seems to have fizzled out. Drowned in syrup, no doubt.

Mischance · 06/09/2025 21:40

I think it's an utterly bonkers idea!

I do sometimes speculate about the age of contributors - can often spot those who are older because they are more laid back - been there, seen it all, got through it, know it will pass - and their advice to a younger Mum can really valuable because of that.

Now you have to guess my age!

You've posted in AIBU, @WhiteNoiseBlur . Not Chat, but actual AIBU - the most robust and direct area of the entire site. If you ask if you are being unreasonable to want to see everyone's ages you will be told in no uncertain terms exactly why that's a terrible idea.

If you want support, lots of other boards on Mumsnet can and do provide it. Coming into the most argumentative board and getting huffy that people argue is pretty daft.

I'm 72

Does it make a difference to you?

Oh, has Nethuns died? Personally I’d say it suffocated from bad spelling.
