Clearly the wider population does - these threads are very popular and repeatedly occur for a good reason…

Yeah, they usually end up full of dog photos.
Oops.

Yes, I am a dog owner. No I will not be taking my dog.

While I can very much see a place for dog buggies, they really don't need to visit Father Christmas: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/dec/02/john-lewis-santa-paws-christmas-pet-grotto

I can confirm I saw a Santa Paws event at my local John Lewis last Christmas. It took me a while (longer than it should have done) to work out what was happening....

Neither do babies and people take them in their droves to see Santa at Xmas.

hungryduck · 02/09/2025 00:11

I disagree with dog beds for the car though. If it's a long car ride it is best for them to have somewhere comfy to lie on. You wouldn't want a hard, solid car seat either.

Dearg · 02/09/2025 00:17

Working dogs probably don’t get any of this stuff, but the others are Pets.

As in, we humans feel good taking care of them. Sure, some people get carried away, treat them as babies etc. , but most of us just focus on the things that make the dog comfier. Like a supportive bed for the car.

Can’t imagine my lab in John Lewis though, her credit score is shite.

My biggest dog would love that. If we lived near one, I would 100% take him. Think of all the new training, smells, and experiences. It would be the equivalent of a full year of walking.

I asked one of the chihuahuas about the ice cream. He wants to know why you're looking at him funny? Also, he is crying now.

Aw, what a cutie.

I am trawling through my phone trying to find a photo I was sent of my mum's dog and his best mate. Both eating ice cream.

JFDIYOLO · 02/09/2025 00:19

Mum's last dog had her own bag for walks later in life. She'd see the bag and the lead, do an arthritic little leap into our hands to be placed in the bag, then was carried to the park for a walk. The dog, I mean. Not Mum.

I asked Dora how she feels about anti-dog threads.

Most of them no; the pram is a great bit of kit for dogs who are elderly and can’t walk. The most washing they don’t need to be is bought by people who treat them as babies. Causes no end of behavioural problems.

Oh Dora! Nevermind the meanies who will deny you doggy ice cream and a comfy bed in the car, and a buggy for when your legs ache too much for long walks.

sittingonabeach · 02/09/2025 00:33

Our last dog wouid probably have loved that soft play. He loved agility which included going through tunnels and climbing over obstacles. He didn’t need to do agility but the joy it brought him and me (and during the school holidays our DC) was immense. It also brought joy to the other people in the class with all his antics (it was a fun not competitive class). Bet we were all a lot happier than grumpy OP starting this thread.

I love seeing dogs enjoy themselves. It is such a simple and free pleasure.

On the subject of ice cream big dog said will you throw the potato he stole for him?

On the subject of anti-dog threads, he said, 'If I'm not allowed a potato, will you throw me a ball instead?'

If it has to be ice cream, he supposes you can throw that instead, but he's not sure how he can bring that back for you to throw again (and again and again)

Dogs don’t need to be parading around any town at all take them to green spaces

DiscoBeat · 02/09/2025 00:36

I agree with some of that. The bubbles absolutely STINK (I know that because I bought.some!)
The prams are excellent. I know a couple of people with dogs that love the park but can't manage to walk all the way there and back.
Ice cream is OK for a treat every now and then. Why not, if it's dog friendly ingredients.

Dogs..don’t need to shop at John Lewis 🤣

Yes that is true! I wouldn't take my Lab there. Nothing fun for dogs at all.

DiscoBeat · 02/09/2025 00:39

They definitely don't need frilly dresses.

I need to walk through my town to get to green spaces.

DiscoBeat · 02/09/2025 00:41

Also, a dog bed in the car helps stop them slide around a little less (our boot has a rubber liner) and then you have it for going away too.

They don't, but some of them do need to be kept warm in the winter or protected from the sun in the summer, so why not a frilly dress if it makes the owner happy? It's not like the dog knows the difference.

My dog gets very comfy in grandchild’s car seat 😊

Pryceosh1987 · 02/09/2025 00:52

Dog nappies. I think this is good, but dogs use the "loo" alot more than people do sadly.

WiddlinDiddlin · 02/09/2025 04:45

Dog ice cream: Plenty do like it, I wouldn't bother for mine but innovation in dog treats is quite handy, we now have a variety of liquid and paste based treats that are very handy for training rewards and enrichment.

Dog bubbles flavoured with bacon: Not a big fan of teaching and encouraging dogs to jump and snap at stuff floating about in the air personally, but then if its giving a dog something to do when the owner won't bother walking/doing more interactive or effortful play/training, its better than nothing.

Dog beds for the car: stops the car getting hairy/muddy/scratched up. Can't really see the problem here.

Dog Prams: Great for injured, disabled or elderly dogs.

Dog carriers: Slings and some types of carrier (bike carriers for example) great for getting pups out before they can go on the ground or before they can walk far. Also good for taking small dogs out for long days out where they might not be fit enough for that amount of exercise - ditto elderly/disabled/injured.

Some carriers are thoroughly unsuitable, some are misused, such is life really.

The 'hairy pound' (pmsl) is a big deal, its the industry I work in and theres billions in it... so there are absolutely products like 'Pawsecco' - non alcoholic 'wine' for dogs/cats that are thoroughly unnecessary and simply exist because enough of the market will buy them.

I don't really care unless its actually harmful - the myriad shock collars, prong collars, devices designed to help the owner force the animal to comply - the ultrasonic devices that claim to be 'harmless' but subject the dog to high pitched sounds that cause real pain - the laser pointer toys that easily trigger obsessive light/shadow hunting and super high stress levels in dogs (imagine chasing something you never ever catch!) (and cats) and are also linked to triggering epilepsy in dogs.. (and now, well, last I checked, you can buy a pet cam that lets you 'play' with a laser pointer toy with your dog when you're not even home, wow.. fuck up your dogs mind whilst you're out, great stuff!

If a product isn't for you... move along. It isn't causing you any harm. There are tons of products out there I fail to see the point in that part people from large sums of money - wine - make up - various skin care products with made up sciencey sounding ingredients... but other people like them!

My dog would like our ice creams, all of them, but I assume the dog version has less sugar.
