SIL still isolating due to covid risk

AIBU to think this is no way to live now? She works from home and will only leave the house for essential errands with mask on. She is terrified of getting long covid. Feels like her life is very very limited for a 38 year old!

Anyone else have people they know in this position? How to support them?

It is vascular. How you could have missed learning this in all these years is odd.

Its vascular!!! Is it you that pops up on every COVID thread screaming "Its vascular!!" as if we should all tremble with fear every time we hear someone cough? COVID-19 was a novel coronavirus which caused nasty respiratory illness is some people, and in others, symptoms more akin to a cold. Heck, some people didn't even know they had it. Now we've all been triple and quadropoly jabbed, plus had it about 4-5 times, it is overwhelmingly similar to a cold. Stop with the hysteria.

You can give it 1001 thoughts, it is still none of your business and beyond your personal powers to control.

Well if that's the case then, we'll just shut down 99% of the threads on this site then.

@Everanewbiewhere are you getting your stats from?

Simpleturnip · 02/09/2025 14:07

@mumatlast14 again, how do you stop your child or your spouse contacting Covid and passing it onto you? Covid will always spread because we are human beings who generally need to have contact with other human beings. I know nothing will change your mind but i dearly hope you are not impacting on your child’s mental health.

We mask and test. Never caught it.

Well I examined the contents of every AIBU? thread in the last month. I divided the number of threads that deal with "other peoples" business where the OP has no right to question anyone else than themselves, then divided that figure by the total number of threads. Then I multiplied that by 100 to express the figure in percentage terms. It was actually 99.12354%, however, I rounded it down to ensure I didn't overstate my case.

What are you on about? This is hardly new news. It is vascular, and has been known to be a vascular as well as respiratory disease for years now. It also has been found to affect the vascular systems of women in particular.

Other viruses also have vascular effects, such as chickenpox, but people aren't isolating from society because of them

That poster is insistent it isn't vascular. And thinks anyone who mentions it is a singular fear-mongering oddball, when it is merely a statement of scientific fact, well known for the last five years. HTH.

This really is where brain cells come to die.

COVID is not a vascular disease. It is a virus of the upper respiratory system. Vascular complications being observed in a study of older women who have suffered particularly nasty bouts does not justify screaming "Its Vascular!!!! Run for the hills! We're all doomed!!!" at every conceivable opportunity.

Firealarm1414 · 02/09/2025 15:21

The thread titled "family still isolating after covid" listed under the similar threads section of this is a depressing example of what these mentally ill parents are doing to their children. Id imagine some on here would be defending their actions "because its VASCULAR!!!!!"

Is Covid-19 a disease of the blood vessels?

Dr Phoebe Kitscha explores some of the biology behind the effects of Covid-19 on the circulatory system, and the research into ways to prevent and treat these effects.

You're reading articles like this and just screaming in your head "Its vascular!!!" without picking out key points. Interesting that this is from the BHF given that I have a congenital heart condition myself. I have a personal interest.

Some key info I noticed, key words in bold

"case studies began to suggest that some of the most severe complications of the disease affected more than just the lungs."

There have been some anecdotal reports that clot-related complications may be less common in people with Covid-19 caused by more recent variants (such as Omicron), but there is a need for more research in this area before we can be sure.

The article is also dated from 2023, since when the outcomes have improved even more. Still nothing to tell me to run for the hills,

Covid does affect the vascular system unfortunately. There have been many studies which show this. "SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, has revealed a broader impact beyond the respiratory system, predominantly affecting the vascular system with various adverse manifestations. The infection induces endothelial dysfunction and immune system dysregulation, creating an inflammatory and hypercoagulable state. It affects both microvasculature and macrovasculature, leading to thromboembolic events, cardiovascular manifestations, impaired arterial stiffness, cerebrovascular complications, and nephropathy, as well as retinopathy—frequently observed in cases of severe illness. Evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 infection may result in persistent effects on the vascular system, identified as long-term COVID-19. This is characterized by prolonged inflammation, endotheliopathy, and an increased risk of vascular complications."

seeing as a percentage of people have it asymptomatically ,how would you know that neither of you have ever had it? So you are sending your child to school continuously in a N95 mask are you? Or are you a home schooler?

Yes, but that doesn't mean "its vascular!!!!" it means vascular complications have been observed in severe cases. Its not the same thing.

As I said, we test. Yes 100% attendance - no sickness, unlike classmates.

A child, masked up all day at school? Its so upsetting. Poor kid. The next step is Munchausen.

I’m incredibly sad for your child if they have to continuously wear a mask. Anyway seeing as i’m dealing with a condition that, like long covid, is likely caused by autonomic nervous system dysfunction i will stop triggering my fight and flight response and go and do something more mentally healthy (and ban myself from mumsnet again, its amazing how much time we can waste pointlessly debating with strangers).

Don't be sad - they have a full health, no long covid risks unlike those poor kids consistently being ill and missing their education or worrying about missing exams.

You really believe that a child wearing a mask is zero risk of contracting covid 19? You might be reducing that risk but you'll never escape it altogether. I think the risk of being bullied and being physiologically damaged by a hypochondriac mother is far greater. I hope they are strong and survive the childhood you are ruining.

You do realise that most kids aren't consistently sick and missing school though? I suppose in your head this has to be the case so you can justify your covid obsession.

Again, how do you know your child wears the mask when you aren't around? And are they allowed to have lunch with their peers?

Everanewbie · 02/09/2025 16:39

Again, this is a study of hyper thrombosis as a complication in severe cases. This is not typical and is treatable with anticoagulants. Why are you so keen to catastrophise this?
