I need to talk about this

Basically what the title says. And I’m posting in AIBU for traffic.

i am very nervous to post this

35F, he is 32M. We do not live together. I have children from previous relationship and he has not met them - important info.

I am in an abusive relationship. There is no question or doubt about it. We have been together for coming up to a year, yes I know it has not been long. I had rose tinted glasses on up until April/May time this year and I have tried to end the relationship a few times.

i need to tell someone, anyone about what happened this morning. I had stayed at his this weekend whilst my children were with exDP. We had actually had quite a nice weekend up until late last night where we got home from a date night I had organised where suddenly the cheating claims came out etc etc etc. This morning it kicked off again as I tried to express my hurt calmly about something and he just hit the roof and told me to get the fuck out of his house so, I proceeded to do so by getting myself ready, packed my things and went downstairs to say goodbye I shall be leaving now. He went absolutely insane, and I mean insane. He was screaming at the top of his voice against the fireplace wall, punched himself in the head and proceeded to scream at me, in my face calling me all the names under the sun and he ran into the kitchen where the back door is to exit so I could leave and he picked up a knife. When I tell you I was scared, I was terrified so I rushed to unlock the back door to escape. He proceeded to hold the knife against his own wrists and scream at me im going to slit my wrists and your going to watch me die. I obviously begged and pleaded with him not to do that, knife still in his hand and he was shouting that nothing would satisfy him more knowing that he dies and I watched him. He then held the knife in the air so I ran back to the back door and he screamed at me to shut it and I said no, he slammed the knife down and said shut the door so I did. He was screaming at me that I drive him to this, I’m narcissistic im evil, all the usual abuse I get almost daily at this point. I was shaking, sobbing, and he went and sat down and then was accusing me of having another boyfriend, that I’ve manipulated every man I’ve been with. Just tearing my character down with false accusations which again is something I’m very used too. He held his fist up to me too before I went upstairs to get changed, and he chased me up the stairs and got in my face to shout at me to tell him what I was saying to his face.

i physically cannot leave. I am trapped. After this, he acted like nothing had happened. He was laughing at social media, trying to make jokes whilst I was completely numb all afternoon waiting for the time I can leave to have my children back.

in the times I’ve tried breaking up with him before but I haven’t physically been with him, he’s found me and he’s gone hysterical at me until I’ve changed my mind or he threatens to attack me or come into the place I am and confront me, or he’s gotten into his car and screamed at me where I am until I tell him and then he threatens suicide.

please do not judge please be kind.

i feel like I’m dealing with someone who has a serious split personality disorder. I do not want the police involved, but I do need to leave. I’m working with a therapist currently to understand why I allowed this in the first place. I’m a lot stronger now but the reactions I get terrify me, especially today.

i just needed to get this out and I just need to hear that what I am experiencing is not ok. Apparently I’m the evil bitch.

Well I'm hoping he DOES kill himself - the world would be a better place if people like him were gone.

Only as far as the OP would feel relief or feel nothing. The world doesn’t need scum bags like him, I agree. But the abused usually has very complex feelings about their abuser. It’s possible to hate someone and miss them. Even if they are the worst of the worst.
Far better for OP’s peace of mind if he just left her alone.
But I don’t think he will do it. It’s only for control that he threatens it.

NoSuchThingAsAFreeHoliday · 01/09/2025 13:43

I have nothing of value to contribute but am wishing you all the best x

Lostandscared1 · 01/09/2025 13:53

Hi everyone

i have not blocked - this is where he really loses it. I am firmly held him accountable for his actions which in a way is proof and evidence for me. Of course he has flipped the script on to me, but I am not engaging. I have answered no calls today. He has said, he would never hurt me and the knife was for him, but this does not mean anything to me. Of course he is saying he loves me more than anything, and I need to work with him on his behaviours as he does not wish to be this way. I am standing really firm in my ground.

for those who are assuming I chose to be here and I keep choosing, no you are wrong. I have been in extreme denial, hence me working with a therapist so I can validate this is abuse, because of course I am trauma bonded (which I now know) and when I see the side of him that I “love”, I think.. no this can’t be abuse! He’s great he loves me! But the knife scenario has really concreated that this is abuse. Outside of that, he has been my best friend and my comfort which is wrong on all levels but it also feels so incredibly real and safe when he is the person I long for him to be.

The last thing he said to me was “ok look after yourself (name). I’m sorry.

i shall update in due course.

I'm so very sorry that you're in this situation.... he sounds pure evil to me. Stay strong, and please get in touch with Womens Aid and the police. Even so it's logged so that if you do need to call in an emergency, you'll be a high priority.

I was in a marriage like this for 13 years, and it all but destroyed me. Please be aware that he will eventually become physically violent to you. As you tolerate more and more, it spirals. And that's next. I was taken away in an ambulance, and the police told my df not to let me go back as they thought he'd kill me next time. Please don't let this be you.

I’m really really sorry you went through this, that must of been utterly terrifying for you. Thank you for sharing your experience with me.

i have moments of weakness, because the man is so unbelievably good at manipulating me and getting back into my head but for the sake of 1. My DC’s and 2. ME I must appreciate they are just temporary feelings for something that actually does not exist. I will continue to work with my therapist

It’s understandable to anyone else who has been in a similar situation. We haven’t all been blessed with the level of self esteem and self preservation that it takes to spot one of these men at the beginning and get rid of them before we develop feelings for them.

You’re oversimplifying it. It’s one thing to know something rationally, a total other ball game to know something emotionally. It takes an enormous amount of strength to even get to where the OP is now, I might be wrong (and don’t want to speak on OP’s behalf obviously) but baby steps are sometimes needed to break away permanently

Shegotanology · 01/09/2025 14:31

@Activetogether It is not our place to try to fix OP. Offer advice, yes, so OP can take what everyone's saying on board. If it were easy to leave an abuser, these threads wouldn't exist.

Tell me you don’t understand the dynamics of an abusive relationship without telling me…

What a nasty, ignorant post.

Shegotanology · 01/09/2025 14:37

@Activetogether Offering support and resources , and helping OP regain agency is what people should be doing, not making decisions for them or implying they’re to blame for staying. OP needs space to process, not pressure to act before they’re ready or able.

I’ve done a Clare’s law, and I do not get flowers delivered.

do not insult me, and do not judge me on a situation that you have no idea on.

You think it’s as simple as blocking this man? And calling the police? Do you not understand that I have tried safely getting away? But then he threatens suicide? And tells me he’s driving to a cliff to jump off, or to a train track to jump infront of it. Do you not understand his screams get under my skin? And I say “ok ok” to keep the peace because I’m scared, then I think ok, il try again when I am brave enough too. I’m too much of a nice person, and unfortunately I have put his life before my own because I have truly believed he will kill himself.

My children have never met him. They have the best father in the world, and they are safe. He has never been to my house (he knows where I live).

i do not want to look at this thread again, its truly making me feel stressed and judged.

I will update, but for now I’m going to do things at my own pace.

You are reminding me of him right now with the way you are speaking to me, so patronising and condescending. You know he knows where I live, I just mentioned that in my post.

He wouldn’t dare come to my house.
