I need to talk about this

Lostandscared1 · 31/08/2025 20:32

Basically what the title says. And I’m posting in AIBU for traffic.

i am very nervous to post this

35F, he is 32M. We do not live together. I have children from previous relationship and he has not met them - important info.

I am in an abusive relationship. There is no question or doubt about it. We have been together for coming up to a year, yes I know it has not been long. I had rose tinted glasses on up until April/May time this year and I have tried to end the relationship a few times.

i need to tell someone, anyone about what happened this morning. I had stayed at his this weekend whilst my children were with exDP. We had actually had quite a nice weekend up until late last night where we got home from a date night I had organised where suddenly the cheating claims came out etc etc etc. This morning it kicked off again as I tried to express my hurt calmly about something and he just hit the roof and told me to get the fuck out of his house so, I proceeded to do so by getting myself ready, packed my things and went downstairs to say goodbye I shall be leaving now. He went absolutely insane, and I mean insane. He was screaming at the top of his voice against the fireplace wall, punched himself in the head and proceeded to scream at me, in my face calling me all the names under the sun and he ran into the kitchen where the back door is to exit so I could leave and he picked up a knife. When I tell you I was scared, I was terrified so I rushed to unlock the back door to escape. He proceeded to hold the knife against his own wrists and scream at me im going to slit my wrists and your going to watch me die. I obviously begged and pleaded with him not to do that, knife still in his hand and he was shouting that nothing would satisfy him more knowing that he dies and I watched him. He then held the knife in the air so I ran back to the back door and he screamed at me to shut it and I said no, he slammed the knife down and said shut the door so I did. He was screaming at me that I drive him to this, I’m narcissistic im evil, all the usual abuse I get almost daily at this point. I was shaking, sobbing, and he went and sat down and then was accusing me of having another boyfriend, that I’ve manipulated every man I’ve been with. Just tearing my character down with false accusations which again is something I’m very used too. He held his fist up to me too before I went upstairs to get changed, and he chased me up the stairs and got in my face to shout at me to tell him what I was saying to his face.

i physically cannot leave. I am trapped. After this, he acted like nothing had happened. He was laughing at social media, trying to make jokes whilst I was completely numb all afternoon waiting for the time I can leave to have my children back.

in the times I’ve tried breaking up with him before but I haven’t physically been with him, he’s found me and he’s gone hysterical at me until I’ve changed my mind or he threatens to attack me or come into the place I am and confront me, or he’s gotten into his car and screamed at me where I am until I tell him and then he threatens suicide.

please do not judge please be kind.

i feel like I’m dealing with someone who has a serious split personality disorder. I do not want the police involved, but I do need to leave. I’m working with a therapist currently to understand why I allowed this in the first place. I’m a lot stronger now but the reactions I get terrify me, especially today.

i just needed to get this out and I just need to hear that what I am experiencing is not ok. Apparently I’m the evil bitch.

You need to go to the police with this.

Letsgoforaskip · 01/09/2025 06:03

Thinking about you today OP. You can do this.

Toooldtocare25 · 01/09/2025 06:10

This is coercive control
you need to ring the police asap
it’s good that you recognise it’s not right but now you need to be brave and put a stop to it.

user1492757084 · 01/09/2025 06:28

Go to Police.
Take their advice to take out a restraining order.
Stop all contact and all communication with the violent man.
If need be, move some hours away.

There is no future in the relationship; he is not a man who you would want to introduce to your children. The children would be taken from you if ever they were spending time with him.

Laxonaweekend · 01/09/2025 06:31

What is the children split with your ex?

curious79 · 01/09/2025 06:42

Honestly I’m absolutely horrified you have gone back to him in the past Given you say this is not the first time it has happened.

  1. you must go to the police and get their advice and make a complaint. This has got to be on record. In the meantime, turn your house into Fort Knox and get cameras everywhere.

  2. get some therapy and work out what in you, self-esteem or lack of confidence or trying to be the rescuer, that means you’re willing to put up with this crap

Just thank the heavens above that the knife was being held to his wrists are not your throat. But frankly with that pattern of behaviour, it sounds like next time this will vary easily escalating into something that hurts you (or your kids)

I am home, with my children and I am
safe. I’ve blocked him in the past and he ends up calling me from a withheld number constantly until I answer

Report him to the police. He is a very dangerous man. Never, even see him again.

Regardless of how many times he calls or messages never answer him again. Ever. He won't kill himself, but even if he did - so what? You won't have caused it he's fucking demented. Are you supposed to stay with a demented violent lunatic to try to keep him alive. Of course you can end it. Do so. Now.

Also, call the police. Now.

ThereIsThunderInOurHearts · 01/09/2025 07:34

@Lostandscared1 You have done the best thing you can at this moment, which is to write it down, share it, take on the advice and feedback (ignoring the miserable trolls and the awful advice) and turn it into your survival pledge.

He has turned your stable life into chaos and turmoil and every move you make now is informed by his behaviour, which is a classic abusive environment.

Do you know what standa out for me? How in control of yourself you still are. How you can still advocate for yourself. I hear your strength and your will to escape this.

Your updates will be a relief to many of us 🙏❤️🙏

My children are safe, loved and unaffected.

i am terrified. This man has psychologically abused me and tormented me for months. My post does not even begin to scrape the surface,

Your children are not safe.
You say you’re not safe, so how can they be?

You can’t even break up with him because you’re worried about what he might do to you - how does that not affect your children?

Laxonaweekend · 01/09/2025 08:30

I would want my children with my ex until this shit show was sorted

Allisnotlost1 · 01/09/2025 08:41

OP, hope you’ve managed to get some rest.
If you haven’t already, today the priority must be to get yourself and your kids safe and protected from this man. Threatening suicide is a tactic and a sign of escalating risk.

I agree.

Your children are safer with their dad right now and so I’d ask him if he can have them full time, until this is sorted.

tierdytierd · 01/09/2025 09:14

Just wanted to say, you’re stronger than you feel, you can do this; I was in an abusive relationship for 3 years, we lived together, he was utterly horrific, I lost myself, didn’t recognise myself at all, took me several years to be comfortable wity life/myself who the new me was and seek those boundaries, I haven’t bn in a relationship for several years now, I’m happy with that. I wish I’d have used the resources available sooner, it was the very last step in my ‘get away’. I should have involved them sooner.
please speak with women’s aid and call the police, start logging and seek their support , make them aware of everything, they can add you to quick response if needed.
please change locks, get a ring door bell or something affordable that can capture everything and if possible up your home security;
one day at a time and remember this will all be over, protect yourself and be kind to yourself too, you can do this, pull on all of the support and services available to help x

Well I'm hoping he DOES kill himself - the world would be a better place if people like him were gone.

Totally agree

Let him crack on I say. But he has no intention of actually doing it.

Change your phone number. Block him on everything including email and social media etc.

Report to the police and apply for a non molestation order via CourtNav so he is ordered not to come near you or contact you.

Speak to the National Domestic Abuse Helpline, Women's Aid or your local domestic abuse charity for support. You can find out who your local area domestic abuse organisation is via Google.

If you are scared of him stalking you, contact The National Stalking Helpline for advice and support: https://www.suzylamplugh.org/pages/category/national-stalking-helpline

I am a survivor of extreme domestic violence, false imprisonment, and coercive and controlling behaviour. My perpetrator is in prison for what he did to me and our child. I now try to help others escape from people like him.

You absolutely do need to involve the police. I wouldn't be surprised if the police already have intelligence about him via his exes. Sometimes these men already have a record of prior DA/DV whether convicted or unconvicted. This man displays a number of high risk behaviours that show you are danger.

The most dangerous time for a victim is when they try to leave and the 12 months post-separation. You will need support to get through this period and to help keep you and your children safe. Please reach out to the professionals for help.

If you haven't blocked him yet, please don't. Wait until you've managed to report to the police and then consider it again depending on their response. Blocking can substantially increase risk in this situation and interrupts evidence collection.

After the incident with the knife, think about reporting to the police and specifically requesting a DVPN. That will (theoretically) prevent him from making contact. If he breaches it is an arrestable offence in its own right.

If I was your caseworker I'm almost certain I'd be grading this as high risk and referring straight to MARAC. I don't think you should be going this alone.

(from an IDVA)

Again, if you haven’t done so already, DO NOT BLOCK. Don’t respond to his contact attempts but keep all evidence and report to police. People are advising to block and change your number in good faith, but this increases risk in this situation.

Sending you a big hand hold it is not easy getting out of a abusive relationship and especially when knives involed i know to well how hard it is

PLEASE PEOPLE, if you have not experienced an abusive relationship, PLEASE don’t feel compelled to say stupid stuff like “just leave then!” you don’t have the skills or insight to be of any use at all to the OP. In fact you’re doing more harm than good.

There are plenty of us here @Lostandscared1 who have been where you are… and got out.

we don’t want to read a headline in a newspaper and wonder if it’s you.

please take the advice of police and women’s aid, you’re going to need all the help you can get, and then some! You’re going to need to be the bravest you have ever been, but you can do this. We’re all here for you.

stay safe, check in with us again if you can. Maybe start a new thread? @MNHQ can help you find the other place if that helps?

Please note that @MNHQ doesn't exist. I mean, that user name doesn't exist, and they won't see it.

I can see that @ImaniMumsnet has posted though. Please can Imani assist the OP in finding the other place.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 01/09/2025 12:58

@Lostandscared1 I'm hoping you won't be deterred from posting because of unhelpful comments.

I escaped a very abusive relationship, many years ago. I understand where you're coming from and I know that there are many of us on here who are supporting you and want to help you.
