Day out friends..they left to go to diff restaurant on their own

TFICoffeetime · 31/08/2025 11:02

Met up with close friends yesterday. We live opposite sides country. We picked scenic village, countryside & meal at a nice country inn.
We were 40 mins late (it's 2.5 hrs for us) 1 hour drive for us & got caught in traffic then stopped once to let DD go to the toilet & stretched dogs legs so she'd wee. All communicated with friends. We arrived, had lovely stroll, river swim and meal at nice country inn with great views. They had booked the meal...we thought lovely place. But when we got there they said they had to leave at 5.30 to go to another restaurant (just them and child). They are starters and went. They said they hadn't realised this place was a fave restaurant & was close to their home. (So why go today). So we were left. It felt v awkward & like punishment for being late maybe. It had been lovely day and ended on weird vibes.
We finished our meal on own then went to another beautiful inn for pudding. After this I feel perplexed. AIBU to think their actions rude & far ruder than been late. We weren't intentionally late & just how it goes with traffic & teenagers.
I don't understand why we couldn't enjoy the meal together as planned. They booked it on the day (it felt like because we were late). We avoided confrontation but left sour note. Our children were perplexed. Just odd & awkward. This friend doesn't like confrontation even if it's "we were a bit sad you changed to go elsewhere" so she wouldn't discuss if I did. But I'm left feeling am I wrong. I just can't see myself having issues if they had longer to drive and was late & I would not change plans on a meal that was meant to be spent together. Xxx

I don’t think it was you, @TFICoffeetime.

I started out thinking it was quiet seething resentment over lateness which they got more annoyed over as the afternoon progressed and you were insufficiently apologetic, but the money update suggests otherwise. It sounds like they had a row over money and/or booking an expensive restaurant they couldn’t afford, then it bubbled over during your starters. Bickering about paying just doesn’t sound like it’s anything to do with what you did. It’s a them problem.

Franpie · 31/08/2025 17:34

EnjoyingTheArmoire · 31/08/2025 17:18

You've said that the wife was weird about paying. Did you discuss how you were going to split the bill at all?

Any chance that your "friends" picked somewhere £££ expecting that you'd be psying for them?

Do you have proof that they actually did go to the nice restaurant near them after they left?

Being a good earner doesn't mean they might not be having money worries. Given the wife's response when the bill came, this makes far more sense than them being upset because you were late.

This is a good point, you never know about people’s finances even if on the outside it looks fine. Perhaps they realised that they’ve hit their overdraft limit or something and couldn’t afford to pay for the full meal?

TFICoffeetime · 31/08/2025 17:34

Dyslexic
As is one of my children.
Why not think of something vile to say about that.
A lot of these comments might be jokes to you. Perhaps it makes you feel happy to cause people that are upset more upset.
Do you even have families or friends or just come online because it's a way of spending your time. Pay attention to your own life. These ridiculous comments are a sad reflection on you.
Go plan your journeys, mock my grammar.
Most have understood. It's not that hard a question. If you can't follow you can choose not to.

What exactly is unclear here, though? You would have liked more time with them, they were happy to have less time with you. That’s all, really, isn’t it?

So they walked out of a booked reservation to go somewhere else

Who does that??

Cardinalita90 · 31/08/2025 17:38

Rather than bickering with posters on here, why don't you just message your friend and say you were a bit surprised by their sudden departure and hope you haven't offended them. Who cares if she doesn't like confrontation, at least you'll be drawing attention to her odd behaviour.

fruitbrewhaha · 31/08/2025 17:39

It’s weird OP. You need to call and ask them.

Raven85 · 31/08/2025 17:40

TFICoffeetime · 31/08/2025 11:39

I mistyped it was 1 HR for them. X

Ok your reading to much into it. I suspect they either didnt fancy the food at this place or they were tired and wanted to get home.

Could be any number of reasons, it could have been to expensive and they didnt realise until they were there. They could have had work the day after and wanted to be home early enough to account for traffic. Maybe they fancied a drink with dinner and wanted to leave the car at home. So many reasons spring to mind

I really dont think they have done this because you were 40 mins late.

She means that if you can't follow this thread, don't bother posting on it. OP has confirmed that she is dyslexic and she obviously finds people mocking her grammar and spelling upsetting.

This. I really don’t understand what went on other than that you were late. I assumed initially your daughter must have been a toddler. Why did you need to stop for a teenager to go to the toilet, she should have gone before you left.

Bloody hell…wow !
What a comment.
I i have said , i am adult, go to the loo before i leave the house in a car ( or anywhere ).
Have you ever considered anyone else and their health ?
I have occasionally been bursting for the loo doing a 35 minute journey .

this should be the takeaway from the thread! 😆😆😆😆

Lanzaroteorgrotty · 31/08/2025 17:46

God you’re getting a hard time on here @TFICoffeetime

I think your friends’ behaviour was odd and rude. I think your afternoon plans sound lovely -walk,swim,dinner. I hope you can call them and ask them if you’ve upset them. I hope you can sort it out.

I’m not a camel either but I’m equally not going to pee myself within 2.5 hours (presumably less) of leaving the house! When I travel somewhere, I want to actually get there, not stop for a piss every 10 minutes!

You do know how continuing to mock a poster’s grammar, who has just told you about their learning disorder makes you look, right?

Not even accidents, road closures and diversions that are completely out of your control?

When some people are driving they dont allow people to have an accident and have a road closed. They drive a car with wings to fly over it all 🤣🤣🤣.
Dear me 🤣

There should be a laughing emoji on this site .

Yeah, @TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne understood that perfectly well… their motivation for that post wasn’t seeking clarification of the meaning of the sentence. And they know it. 🥱

TFICoffeetime · 31/08/2025 14:41

Kind rationale chat

Ok i read through your entire chats now and there's something more to this....

I dont for a minute think its because you were late...

They entered and ordered the starter they fully intended on eating that full meal. Something happened between the starter and ordering the main. I dont know what it was but I would seriously be considering what it was.

Maybe the husband and wife are having issues? Maybe it was something one of you said? The only thing im absolutely sure of is that you being late wasn't the issue. They wouldnt have entered and started the meal if it was, surely you can see that?

Maybe the driver wanted to drink and drive unbeknowns to you and the other wanted to get the car home and use a close restaurant. There are many possibilities.

Could be that the food was bad I suppose, maybe ask her if everything is ok and let her know your a listening ear if she needs one.

Sorry, no 40 minutes is too late. People waiting all day perhaps for food in a decent place to eat and 40 minutes added on then having to order etc. Even more difficult if I had children growing impatient or a dog/ cat to feed at home/ other responsibilities.

I grew up fearful of journeys as my dad was so unpleasant if any of us needed the toilet.

I have brought my kids up differently. When any of us of any age needs the toilet, the only response is ‘let’s look for the next service station’.
