To think my friend is ungenerous in only buying herself a concert ticket?

My long term friend lives in the opposite end of the country and comes to stay once a year. Likewise I stay with her once a year.

Over the years one of our main shared hobbies has been going to gigs together. Last year she booked a gig in my city and asked to stay with me. I said yes but felt a little irked she didn’t either get me a ticket or invite me too. But I left it.

This year she said she wants to see a band in my city again. I suggested I may also want to go depending on finances (this year has been tough for me which she knows). She’s now told me she’s bought herself a ticket and asked to stay with me. AIBU to think this behaviour is a little ungenerous?

You don't need 'inviting' to a gig, its a public thing you can go to if you fancy it not a wedding or private birthday party. She is literally telling you about it and that she is going so just go. She probably thinks its a bit weird your not going given its your shared interest, probably never crossed her mind you are sitting at home waiting to be formally invited to a concert.

Why should she buy you a ticket, they are really expensive now even for small bands.

I swear some people are actually robots who don't understand human interaction/the context of things.
Yes, of course a gig is a public thing, but these two people have a history of going to them together. Given it's a shared interest, as you do acknowledge, do you not find it a little odd that the friend doesn't remember this history and think?, 'I wonder if Lois would like to go?'? Especially as she's actually staying with her?!

Exactly. Sounds like the poster is suggesting they both go separately to the gig without ever discussing it with each other. So they share an evening meal together, get up and go to separate rooms to get ready, walk out the door, op drives to the gig and friend gets the bus, see each other there and perhaps give one another a wave. Gig finishes they leave and make their separate ways back to OPs house.

A completely normal and human way to behave 😁And far easier than just saying "hey I was thinking of coming to (yours) in November because (band are playing). do you fancy it and if so can I stay with you for a few days?" * *

Also she stays with me for 5-7 days

I was going to say YABU until I saw that she stays with you for this long each time! If she's going to expect you to put her up for a bloody week then yeah, she should treat you to a ticket for the gig as a thank you.

D'you know what I mean?!? Honestly, I can't imagine how some people function in society.

“Sorry friend - I’m Airbnb-ing my room so I can afford a concert ticket”

Rottweilermummy · 02/09/2025 16:33

She could have asked you when she was getting the tickets, then you probably could have given her the money a bit at a time if you were short thats what friends do as people have said concerts are extortionate I didn't think you were expecting her to pay for you just to get you a ticket so you could go and pay for it though for 50 she should really let yiu have it anyway
Hard when people come to stay and dont or hardly contribute, just had visitors for nearly 3 weeks. Wouldn't mind but the amount of stuff they bought themselves for gifts. And when we had no cash and place we were eating was only taking cash they expected the money back they lent us. Just say to your friend next time she is booking tickets let you know so u can go too.

You are being used. Cut her loose.

The reason is:

  • she travels a long way and wants to spend longer than a day or two
  • she went to uni in my city (where we met) and uses the time to catch up with various people

Sounds like you're just free accommodation. We go to gigs a lot in london and we live an hour away. While it's totally doable to get the train back there is always a chance it's not running, we miss the last train etc and it would also mean we can't go out after. For this reason we get a hotel and even the cheapest hotels are 150 a night easy. If she had to pay for that every time she went to a gig she would prob be going to a lot less gigs. It also sounds like she just uses you as a place to stay when she wants to come back to see her other friends from uni. I'm not really sure why you can't see that ...

I don't think she's being ungenerous not buying you a ticket as you mentioned that you stay with her once a year too - but I am curious as to why she wouldn't ask if you wanted to go with her! It's an obvious thing to do!
