To think that surely Rayner has to go.

Blankscreen · 29/08/2025 09:33

Well well well.

So now it emerges that Rayner rearranged her property affairs and declared to HMRC that her new flat in Brighton is her main residence and saved £40k on the SDLT bill as a result.

She has then apparently declared to the local councils the complete opposite.

I'm sure slimeball Kier will defend and say it was perfectly legal blah blah blah.

Not to mention she has a grace and favour house funded by tax payers in London as her constituency office is so far away. Yet she 'lives' in Brighton - surely she could just commute that distance like may others do every day.

Surely she has to go.

I disagree with your point about the media. I find that they’re very anti Labour 🤷🏻‍♀️

Me too. I hope she stays, it seems a very thin accusation to me.

And as for paying more into my pension if I start to earn over £100,000 instead of paying more tax, then yes I would as I already pay enough tax as it is, and I don't agree with losing your personal allowance at that level, which should be now set at about £140,000 to 150,000 if it followed inflation or salary increases since it was introduced.

It's the rhetoric around this. That's distasteful. She didnt do anything wrong, but the fact she is a working lass girl done well is where the vitriol lies more than for any other politician.
Successful females still face more challenges

No it isn't. It's because she's such a hypocrite.

What she has done may be all above board. But the optics of it don't look great.

If Boris Johnson had done something like this image the outrage from the shills and flag wavers on here.

VI in property is a problem across parliament I think that needs to be resolved, especially since successive governments have failed to manage housing in the countries best interest.

The current Labour government policy seems to be the latest in a long line of failings to deliver the housing solutions that the country desperately needs.

Boris broke Covid rules, Boris cheated on his wife multiple times, Boris said openly racist remarks, Boris had secret meetings with a Russian oligarch, Boris funded Downing Street renovations via a private donor. Was it flag waving to think he was and is a disgrace of a man and politician?

justteanbiscuits · 29/08/2025 13:09

Woman divorcing buys new property to live in.

Unfortunately there is no real headline in that, so it's been twisted to be her third property! (one comes as part of her job, so is certainly not hers. One is being lived in by soon to be ex husband, hence being removed from deeds)

Wildfairy · 29/08/2025 13:12

She’s protected by rhe unions, she’s not going anywhere, starmer doesn’t have that power, she’s basically just coining it in when they have their short spell in power, holidays, clothes, homes. She’s not the only one, Christ kier and his free clothes is cringe. But he can’t take raynor out, she’s the union placement, he’s side lined her as much as he can.

Plantatreetoday · 29/08/2025 13:18

I would love to see her go
Her undemocratic housing policy is a disgrace

She must live for the minimum period in her constituency
She should be commuting from Brighton just like others do and not have a grace and favour property in London
She should not be avoiding her full Stamp tax
I understand her and her dh split up a long time ago so I don’t see how that gives her a get out clause

WildWensleydale · 29/08/2025 13:20

Anti tax dodging, unless it’s her doing it

I really, really despise this government. They take the piss again and again and again.

Quite.

What’s undemocratic about the housing policy? As for not using her grace and favour accommodation, presumably Starmer could commute from Kentish Town, do you want him to move out of Downing Street?

Bringmeahigherlove · 29/08/2025 13:24

I don’t think she needs to go but I do think Labour need to get vastly better at controlling narratives. She has left herself wide open to this kind of headline, why not pre-empt it and control it? I’m a life long Labour supporter but this lot are so so frustrating.

What is wrong with a politician coming from a “normal” background? I’m sick of the old Etonian boys club.

OtherS · 29/08/2025 13:26

So taxpayers have to pay to provide her with a London home, including council tax, because she can't be expected to commute into town from her principal residence (direct line train, 1h 1m). But she is going to manage to commute to Ashton-under-Lyne (3 trains, a tram, and about 20 minutes walk - 4h 34m. Or 5h 38m polluting by car.) Right. I do wonder if suddenly she'll realise this isn't a very practical set up after all, and buy another property near her constituency. Which will then, of course, be claimed as her principal residence. And therefore receive the associated tax breaks.

Interesting how one of her most memorable moments was calling other politicians scum...

Admiralty House goes with the job, just like Downing Street is part of the PM and chancellor’s packages.

Dutchhouse14 · 29/08/2025 13:32

She was an idiot to do this in her position even if it was legal.
However I don't like the media baiting of her.
It smacks of keeping a working class woman her place.
Conservative male MPs would not get anywhere near the amount of criticism for doing the same thing, if it was reported at all.
I don't think she's any worse or any better than your average politician.
Apart from the fact she would have had a lot more tenancity and resilience to become deputy prime minster, she would have come across a lot of prejudice along the way and it's great for working class young people, particularly girls to see someone relatable in a position of power.

She can override public opinion
if an area doesn’t have enough schools or if it’s the green belt or agricultural land or the road network can’t cope and a multitude of other issues raised by locals AND the planning departments she can and does override that. She pulls the application before the Planning Committee meeting and approves it

In terms of the PM living in Downing Street I don’t think that’s a fare comparison.

I personally don't want my daughter to relate to someone who was pregnant as a teenager and has few qualifications. That's not who I want as a role model for her. Or someone who calls other MPs "scum" in public.

JLou08 · 29/08/2025 10:21

I don't agree with what she has done but I wonder if the same people saying she needs to go are the same who would advise high earners on how to get more out of the state. I've seen so many comments to high earners about paying extra pension, reducing hours etc to get just below the 100,000 salary so they can claim benefits from the state (childcare and child benefit). That's no different to what Raynor has done. I find people are very selective in which tax dodging and claiming from the state is acceptable.

How is working fewer hours the same lying on documents for the tax man?

Are you saying that higher earners who work fewer hours are stealing tax from the government?

What's view on part time workers? Should they pay as much tax as someone who works full time on the basis that it's stealing tax if they work part time?

BIossomtoes · 29/08/2025 13:38

Let's get all the snobbery in.

Bruisername · 29/08/2025 13:42

It’s more relevant because she is in charge of housing policy

the problem Labour has is that they are very much ‘do as I say, not as I do’.

with the tories there’s no pretence!!!

Awful woman. Awful behaviour.

None of them are very bright at all. This looks terrible and any common sense would tell you it's not a wise move. But no they just plough ahead anyway.

How can a Human Rights lawyer who was QC not be ‘very bright?’
