To think that surely Rayner has to go.

Blankscreen · 29/08/2025 09:33

Well well well.

So now it emerges that Rayner rearranged her property affairs and declared to HMRC that her new flat in Brighton is her main residence and saved £40k on the SDLT bill as a result.

She has then apparently declared to the local councils the complete opposite.

I'm sure slimeball Kier will defend and say it was perfectly legal blah blah blah.

Not to mention she has a grace and favour house funded by tax payers in London as her constituency office is so far away. Yet she 'lives' in Brighton - surely she could just commute that distance like may others do every day.

Surely she has to go.

What she has done may be all above board. But the optics of it don't look great.

If Boris Johnson had done something like this image the outrage from the shills and flag wavers on here.

VI in property is a problem across parliament I think that needs to be resolved, especially since successive governments have failed to manage housing in the countries best interest.

The current Labour government policy seems to be the latest in a long line of failings to deliver the housing solutions that the country desperately needs.

If Boris had to give a house to everyone he’d been with we’d have an even worse housing crisis nationally

he colleague defended her because she followed the letter of the law. Shame she didn’t follow the spirit

however, I understand she’s in the process of divorcing so I imagine the family home has been given to her husband and she got a payout which she used to buy the flat. So I don’t think the stamp duty is the issue. It’s the claim that her stbxh house is her primary residence for council tax and it’s the fact she doesn’t actually have a home in her constituency

Agreed - this is the crux of the SDLT issue - if she signed the family home over to her husband as part of the divorce settlement then she shouldn't pay additional rate SDLT on the Hove flat because it's not an additional home.

I don't agree with what she has done but I wonder if the same people saying she needs to go are the same who would advise high earners on how to get more out of the state. I've seen so many comments to high earners about paying extra pension, reducing hours etc to get just below the 100,000 salary so they can claim benefits from the state (childcare and child benefit). That's no different to what Raynor has done. I find people are very selective in which tax dodging and claiming from the state is acceptable.

The difference is she’s been EXTREMELY vocal for years about people doing things like this calling them fit to burn
then she does the same her ( including taking gift) in the public eye it’s laughable

At the last election all but 1, maybe 2, candidates for my local area had addresses outside the constituency. Some quite a way outside.

So that seems the norm

You would have to travel for most of the day to get from Brighton to Tameside.

Bruisername · 29/08/2025 10:32

It’s the do as I say, not as I do attitude that always gets politicians into trouble and rayner is a prime example of that

RobustPastry · 29/08/2025 09:40

Prezza was really popular including in the media though
saying that apparently she’s very nice in person and liked in her department

I have heard this too - from a civil servant that works for her. Apparently she's a good boss, listens to advice, and even if she doesn't agree will compromise or negotiate respectfully. She doesn't talk down to staff or throw her weight around.

I was actually surprised by this, I'm not a fan of the woman, but apparently she's respected.

I didn’t know she was divorcing and am sorry to hear that. Let’s give her a break she’s probably in a right state: And she’s not broken the law it sounds like. Hopefully she sorts out a base in the constituency.

@RobustPastry No, they have been separated for years. She's been in an on-off thing with another man for years (currently ON) and there was a hoo-haa over that when she took him on a freebie to New York last year as her partner.

ruffler45 · 29/08/2025 10:45

Politicians have been doing this for a long long time, remember the expenses scandal..

The government has a 5 year mandate and a 150 majority, heaven help us but they are not going anywhere soon unless something really drastic/catastrophic happens..

AlastheDaffodils · 29/08/2025 10:46

Bruisername · 29/08/2025 10:03

I think it’s the council tax that is raising eyebrows tbh - and the lack of home in her constituency

are there any rules on how much time an MP has to spend in their constituency

No there aren’t. Only a few decades ago it was common for MPs (especially Tory MPs) to visit their constituency one or twice a year. Alan Clark lived in a castle in Kent. His constituency was in Devon.

The idea that MPs should all live in their constituency (or even have any links there) is quite modern, and it’s not at all a rule.

Strollingalong · 29/08/2025 10:46

She’s a hypocritical bully who railroads others then practises to suit her own purposes. Definitely a key figure in Animal Farm.

Yes exactly. Me too, same type of reliable source.

Ihateboris · 29/08/2025 10:50

Yes, Angela "Do As I Say, Not As I Do" Rayner most definitely has to go. She's taking the absolute piss and is a total hypocrite. What she's done is perfectly legal, but definitely immoral

Ihateboris · 29/08/2025 10:54

She also wants to stop the Right to Buy council houses, which she herself benefited from when she sold her ex council house. Maybe she should pay the profit back to the tax coffers.

twistyizzy · 29/08/2025 10:56

The good thing with Labour is that there's always a tweet

To think that surely Rayner has to go.
nongnangning · 29/08/2025 10:58

Just for a bit of balance (and in case you are reading Angela 😎)

Ignore the haters! I think you are great and would much prefer to see you as PM than Keir Starmer.

HermioneWeasley · 29/08/2025 09:42

She’s awful, thick and grasping.

Nasty. You I mean

twistyizzy · 29/08/2025 10:58

Strange the timing of it and the claim that it's now her main residence.....scared of losing her original seat??
And doing it right before Autumn budget, she knows something we don't yet?

At least we're already over a year in, so only just under 4 years left of this nonsense. Hopefully, they'll call an early election maybe in 3 years' time depending on how bad things get, as there may be a "window" where they think they'll escape being completely decimated at the next GE and try to salvage some of their seats and MP's even when they know for certain they won't win the next GE (personally I think it's already a foregone conclusion they won't win the next GE!).

That's not true.

They are supposed to - or should - have meetings where they meet their constituents and become involved in local issues.

Alan Clark was a one-off and not typical by any means in any aspect of his life.

Bonjamin · 29/08/2025 11:03

Armando Ianucci must sometimes wonder whether politicians actually watched The Thick of It, or just saw it as some kind of handbook.

Malcolm would not have responded well to the photos of Angela in an inflatable boat, vaping in a camo DryRobe.

PigeonPants · 29/08/2025 11:04

I'm not a fan of Rayner (I think it's mainly the internalised misogyny that gets me), but whether or not Starmer will back her depends on whether she's broken the letter of the law and/or Labour policy or not.

Anyway, Blair is back so it's going to be a whole new Labour soon.

And your post is still somehow unreasonable.

millymollymoomoo · 29/08/2025 11:04

She 💯 should go for this but many other reasons too!

and if this was Tory or reform mp the press would literally hound them out ! Another example of two tier society we have. It’s disgusting

GasPanic · 29/08/2025 11:10

Rayner is the lefts appointment at the top of the party. You may get rid of her, but the replacement will probably be just as bad.

Also remember she and her lot are probably the ones that busted the welfare budget changes wide open and reduced the chancellor to tears.

So it's not all bad.

You don’t think she’s being hounded? Everyday I seem to read articles about her.
