In 4 years, 2029, UK deaths will exceed births!

Just came across this and thought it was wild… according to the ONS, by 2029 the number of deaths in the UK is expected to outnumber the number of births for the first time in decades.

  • Our fertility rate is only about 1.5 kids per woman, well below replacement.
  • Meanwhile, the population is ageing — all those baby boomers are moving into their 70s and 80s.
  • The result? The natural population growth turns negative, meaning any population increase will rely entirely on immigration.

It’s crazy to think that in just 4 years, births won’t even keep up with deaths. Makes you wonder what that’ll mean for schools, NHS, pensions, and housing.

While the planet as a whole is over populated I don’t think people understand the implications when they think this is a good thing.

There needs to be younger people earning. This is what pays for state pensions, funds the NHS, pays for elderly care. If there is a huge imbalance of older people there is not just less people to do then physical act of caring for older people but also less money being paid in taxes and national insurance.

sundayfundayclub · 28/08/2025 22:14

I don’t have an issue with a lower population and it’s not just Britain, it’s everywhere in the developed world. However, those presenting this rather simplistically as “good” are misguided. It presents a whole raft of challenges that we aren’t adequately prepared for.

Realistically a lower population is good but you still want it bottom heavy.

Taxes will keep rising & services will get worse.

The population is growing, don’t worry!

‘More than half (65%) of the increase in the UK population between 2004 and 2023 was due to the direct contribution of net migration.

Since 2020, almost all of the growth in the population has come from net migration.
Official figures projected that the UK’s population would grow from 68 million in 2022 to 77 million in 2046. Net migration accounted for 104% of this growth. Net migration has accounted for 98% of population growth since 2020.’

Inevitable. Give it 20 years and virtually all of us boomers will have gone, our kids will have all our money and all the people who hate us will see inequality on steroids. There will be a new set of people to envy and despise.

Is this because no one can emigrate anymore because Brexit fucked us?

echt · 28/08/2025 22:20

Boomers had too many kids and buggered things up for us all. Got a link about that @ImGoingUpstairsToTakeOffMyHat ?

I doubt it. Not That many people emigrated to within the EU anyway. Probably more to Aus etc. though I’ve not looked at numbers for that at all. Happy to be educated on it!

People still Can move to the EU, just need eg. work permits etc. as usual for outside the EU.

The world can only keep on breeding for so long, this is a good thing

This is why they are legalising assisted suicide.

Once you are no longer able to look after yourself you will be expected to die. That’s my black pill

And that's a bad thing? I don't want to live if I can't look after myself, what a shitty existence that would be. Literally just existing, not living. No thanks.

I think we understand just fine.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing that people are having fewer kids. Boomers had too many kids and buggered things up for us all. It’s just a shame the reason seems to be financial. It should not be so expensive to have children. Bog standard houses shouldn’t be in the 7 figures. There has to be a happy medium.

It’s not ‘boomers’ fault that house prices are ridiculous. It’s the economy. It’s terrible that wealth inequality is so huge, and getting more so. But that’s not ‘boomers’ fault.

Totally understand why it’s frustrating. A decent wage can’t buy a decent family house anymore, and that’s wrong. It’s time for the uber wealthy (billionaires etc) to pay more tax.

Labour need to stop punishing the middle class, they’re not wealthy any more.

BoudiccaRuled · 28/08/2025 22:30

Just as well! Infinite growth on a finite planet makes no sense at all.

MsSmartShoes · 28/08/2025 22:31

I feel so sorry for the next generations living to support an aging population before their own needs are met.

Ah but it does include students coming into the UK so it's hardly surprising. Most unis are now wanting 75-80% international students because they are so underfunded by UK fees.

MsSmartShoes · 28/08/2025 22:34

All the while the pharmacy industry makes a fortune prolonging life. For what? I visit a care home two times a week and I see the elderly slumped in chairs, at best they are lonely and miserable, at worst they are breathing corpses - paying the fees until their hearts stop. It’s heartbreaking.

Except they won't.

As resources get scarcer and scarcer (who is doing the work to produce them?) then the elderly and feeble won't get near them.

Crochetandtea · 28/08/2025 22:36

Good . We have too many people in the world.

Badbadbunny · 28/08/2025 22:37

LurkThenPost · 28/08/2025 20:38

How are people meant to have kids when they can't afford the childcare fees? Nurseries are always referred to as education, yet the state doesn't cover this like primary, secondary school and college? Women naturally want to go part time, but this means their career is plummeted plus wages not matching fees and keeping up. Which means they'll take time away from work which is not great for women e.g. power in relationship. Young people can't afford to buy a house. Things need to change otherwise birth rates will continue to drop.

Nail on the head!

sundayfundayclub · 28/08/2025 22:39

By what about the next 20 years? 😆

This is a good example why the governments haven't planned for the ageing population, when people mention it it's dismissed as hatred!

sundayfundayclub · 28/08/2025 22:40

Why is it a good thing to have fewer dc but more old people?

They vote though and tend to vote for things they think will benefit them.

sundayfundayclub · 28/08/2025 22:42

Logically if you want fewer people you don't want them to be old.

Posts like this baffle me tbh.
