Just a chat to understand what’s going on with the influx of England and UJ flags all over the streets?

thoughts?
where did it stem from?
is it making you uncomfortable? (It is, me, but not entirely sure why)

They show the middle aged women too

Funny how they're all so unflattering. Think the photographer needs a new vocation? Or could it be deliberate.... Pray tell, where did you source these from?

One (the racist abusing a nurse in the park) was from the Daily Mail I believe, the others 2x posted by protestors themselves & 1x by Reform UK.

! Yes, I believe absolutely hate speech / slurs/insults derogatory language IS wrong - whether it comes from the left or right. My issue is the hypocrisy of the left who think nothing of dropping in ' gammon ' etc to their everyday language which in my mind, can be nothing less than a racist slur. But they don't see it at all. Alongside the well worn stereotypes of " fat, bald, toothless, beer swilling, thicko " who apparently, has no right to breathe the same air. Every time I see the coverage of the protests in the guardian or on the BBC, I'm presented with the same stereotypical images - it's clear as day to see, they'll never use images of middle aged woman who are also protesting. It's utter propaganda and the narrative of " fascist Britain " continues to be fed.

I’m sorry, I don’t see how it can be a racist slur to call someone a ‘gammon’? It’s usually white people insulting other white people from what I’ve seen, so it can hardly be prejudice against their own skin colour? (I’m not defending the use of that insult by the way, I think it’s obnoxious and adds nothing to the point being made.)

I'll have to take your word unless you care to share links? No problem if you can't of course. My point remains, the media manipulates - often too subtle to recognise until someone points it out. People are often denigrated on here for being daily mail readers, but the left wing press is exactly the same.

Of course it's a racist slur; it's referring to someone's skin colour in a derogatory fashion! You've only ever it heard used by white People to other white people?! It's the most popular left wing insult on mumsnet.

Thanks. Despicable couple. But these weren't pictures of people attending the immigration protests; it's an entirely different story.

I agree that it’s a popular left wing insult and, as I said, I really dislike it. But racism is prejudice against another ethnic group. How can that be so if the insult comes from another white person?

As I understand it, ‘gammon’ only refers to a specific group of white people, not white people as an ethnic group.

An insult doesn’t have to be racist to be unacceptable.

It’s not their natural “resting skin colour”, but the violent shade of puce they turn when they’re incandescent with rage at:

  • Not being able to call Easter eggs Easter eggs
  • Rainbow flags
  • Brown people
  • Avocados
  • Non-dairy milks
  • Refugees
  • Working from home
  • Electric vehicles
  • Eid / Diwali
  • Barbers shops
  • Travellers
  • Cyclists
  • Gay & non-binary people
  • The colour palette of BBC temperature charts
  • Halal meat
  • Net zero
  • Wind turbines
  • Accounts of historic bad behaviour by Britain
  • Bins
  • Single mothers
  • Foreigners
  • …etc

The reference to gammon stems from a Question Time episode from the Brexit years where the majority of those asking questions were middle-aged men, spitting fury at those dastardly Europeans (our closest neighbours and trading partners), who all were so worked up their skin took on a “funny tinge” as it were, the colour of what the Spanish call “Jamon”, the French call “Jambon” and which has been corrupted to “Gammon” by the English.

Their faces were posted on social media in an image which became known as the “Mur de Jambon” in French, which the English corrupted into “Wall of Gammon”.

And now the English right-wing claim that term is racist, despite it only referring to a temporary, transient skin colour during a moment of fury so intense it made both cardiac nurses and The Reaper sit forward in their chairs.

Do you self identify as a 'gammon' then ? Do you find yourself getting increasingly incensed at others who have a different viewpoint?

Sorry you’re right this was a racist being horrible to minorities away from a hotel. There are women in this one which IS outside a hotel on The Wirral, where none of the occupants have been accused of any wrongdoing whatsoever. However a white British man actually did rape several young girls in hotels in that area but these doctors and engineers don’t care about that.

And there you go again with your sneery "doctors and engineers " comment. Are they too working class for you? Too poor? Too disabled?

Can you tick any off the list yourself? Cyclists are never very popular and avocados are definitely an acquired taste. If so, you are officially a gammon.

Do you feel uncomfortable seeing Spanish flags flown in Spain, for example?

I’m guessing probably not.

I feel uncomfortable seeing any country’s flags when they appear as a direct result of far-right nationalism. These flags only appear then. This is not about patriotism or national pride. It is about racism. As you well know.

The EXACT terminology used by many racists to denigrate asylum seekers and immigrants. Not a coincidence I picked those words.

I can’t drink almond milk, and I’m not a huge fan of an avocado. Don’t mind bins, brown people or wind turbines.

I wouldn’t say I’m “incandescent with rage” about any of it. I reserve that for bigger problems than imaginary Easter egg debates.

Sometimes it’s about the strength of the reaction. I don’t like avocados, but I’ve never yelled at one.

Then, why align yourself with racists? 🤷 it's just as bigoted, whichever direction you're coming from.

Mmmm, tis rather upsetting when they desecrate the humble Easter egg by hybriding it into some rectangular monstrosity though... M&s I'm looking at you. I'll give it to the cyclists round my way though, they're quite fond of a bell. Very considerate.

If they set the tone & terms for debate at that level I’ll respond in that way. Otherwise I’d be labelled “smug”, “holier-than-thou”, “virtue-signalling” and all the other horseshit you get labelled if you refuse to descend to their level.

But no ones " setting the tone " that way, apart from you. No ones having to resort to insults and classist slurs here, apart from you. No ones labelling anyone, apart from you... Can't you see that you're part of the problem?
