Just a chat to understand what’s going on with the influx of England and UJ flags all over the streets?

thoughts?
where did it stem from?
is it making you uncomfortable? (It is, me, but not entirely sure why)

There’s a good exposé here:

https://xcancel.com/docrussjackson/status/1958229505706971418#m

It’s far-right instigated and funded. People joining in are useful idiots. Nothing at all patriotic about it.

Ablondiebutagoody · 28/08/2025 13:54

I think it's fine. I don't feel uncomfortable if people want to display the national flag(s).

MathiasBroucek · 28/08/2025 13:56

Just something else for us all to all argue about....

ayepecking · 28/08/2025 13:57

What is your AIBU?

Catpiece · 28/08/2025 13:59

It’s the Willy-waving racists who seem to think it’s good to try to intimidate others. It’s going to end in civil war here.

TheNoonBell · 28/08/2025 14:02

I think they look great. Nice to see them flown outside of sporting events for a change.

ilovesooty · 28/08/2025 14:02

There have been a lot of threads on this. Perhaps you'll find the information you're looking for on one or more of them.

KnickerlessParsons · 28/08/2025 14:04

In Wales and Scotland (don't know about NI), the respective national flags are flown everywhere. It's about time England was allowed to do the same.

genesis92 · 28/08/2025 14:05

Do you feel uncomfortable seeing Spanish flags flown in Spain, for example?

I’m guessing probably not.

CurlewKate · 28/08/2025 14:05

Always lots of naivety-false or otherwise-on threads like these….

KitsyWitsy · 28/08/2025 14:06

Yeah, we absolutely needed another thread on this. Definitely.. Hmm

Don’t kid yourself it’s because everyone feels patriotic all of a sudden.
It’s sinister.

EchoedSilence · 28/08/2025 14:08

Have you not been on MN for the last week?

Elephant9 · 28/08/2025 14:09

Sorry guys I did search for a thread but didn’t find one. Feel free to point me in the right direction

It looks nice round our way. Very patriotic. It reminds me of the street parties when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s.

MyGreyStork · 28/08/2025 14:12

Is it racist to hang your national flag with pride? No. But the racists are weaponising it to express hate against foreigners and non nationals. That is their intent. So anyone that does this is going to appear racist.

Yes. That’s what I meant in my post x

Wishing14 · 28/08/2025 14:15

There are two options and two options only. Either 1) You state that every single flag has been put up by racists who want to intimidate non-white people OR 2) You consider that the reasons are complex and multifaceted, warranting debate, conversations, action and unity.
But, be warned, if you take the second option you are a misinformed idiot, and also a racist. And in fact, we should despise and mock you.

I'm not. The point I was trying to make is that patriotic people should be allowed to fly the national flag of the country they live in, along with organisations. Every other country in the world does.

In fact the more the flag is flown for "nice" reasons, the less impact it would have if flown for nefarious reasons.

BallerinaRadio · 28/08/2025 14:20

Racists are putting flags on lampposts.

That's the shortest version.

R0ckandHardPlace · 28/08/2025 14:22

It’s not just the flag flying, it’s the daubing of paint all over the roads. It looks atrocious and our overstretched, bankrupt councils can ill-afford to repair the damage. They need locking up, the absolute cretins.

Millytante · 28/08/2025 14:27

Dahling, hadn’t you heard? It’s ‘Shankill ✊🏼Chic’ this season in all the best places.

I don’t have an issue with England being festooned in England flags.
I love world / Euro cup time with all the flags.

However the intent behind the current influx seems more hostile. I would not feel safe living in a neighbourhood where this was happening.

rockstarshoes · 28/08/2025 14:29

Why don’t you have a search across Mumsnet for a thread about flags? We have had about 50 of them since Saturday, to the point it’s been suggested that they have their own Board.

You will find lots of varied opinions!

2dogsandabudgie · 28/08/2025 14:32

I think you're a bit late to the party OP, this has been done to death on here now.
