Is anyone better off since Labour

1000 replies

Luckymum20 · 26/08/2025 20:26

I am not just talking financially but feeling optimistic about the future for children, old age.

With the £22 billion debt now pasing £50 billion.

The increase in Council tax (that they said the wouldn't do). OAPs raid on pensions and no Winter fuel relief. Changes to finance regarding care homes. Utilities up. TV licence up. Food costs up...

I know minimum wage has increased but all costs have increased by a greater amount!

In 2021 minimum wage was almost 30% lower than it is now...

So I ask. Is anyone actually feeling better off, optimistic and pleased with this Government.

Also the October budget of likely to bring more stains on the 'average working man"

YABU - change will happen. It a good thing.

YANBU - not good

No idea, I thought we were just saying meaningless left wing phrases to each other

Oh, I'll look it up then.

You can hardly expect a year to be enough to repair fourteen years of austerity?

The economy is literally in a worst state than post Liz Truss. It’s just been done slightly slower so hasn’t had this huge media coverage

HRTQueen · 28/08/2025 11:50

Energy bills dropped a little but shall now increase and food continues to rise but these are worldwide issues

Personally I am not better off but neither did I expect Labour to be able to turn things around in a year, it will take many years and we have a few difficult years ahead especially if the wars in the Ukraine and Gaza continue

I have certainly not agreed with all of Labour's choices (I do not expect to agree with all their choices) and I think they have a terrible pr team but I do believe they are the better party to run the country to make it fairer for us all

Figmentofmyimagination · 28/08/2025 11:51

As others have said, the issue is with policies that actively make the prospects for growth and job creation worse, not better.

Take the Employment Rights Bill as an example. If there is ever a right time for this bill, it is not now. This bill gives the impression that the government only views the economy from a textbook, and through the prism of secure regular public sector employment. They must be able to foresee the consequences because everyone else can, so ploughing ahead is unforgivable.

To take just one example, if you ban enforced contract change (‘fire and re-hire’) even if the employer has good business reasons, has consulted fully and offered fair reward for the change - unless you can prove that the org is facing imminent threat of serious financial harm - then the employer’s only real choice will be to stick with the status quo even though it is not in the organisation’s long term interest, but limit recruitment, reduce terms for new joiners, make redundancies, devise contracts that provide a unilateral right to make change without consultation, and increase the use of ‘fake self employment’.

This change completely removes the employer’s ability to forward plan effectively and binds them to existing contract terms - unless they make you redundant.

There are lots of other examples like this one. It is madness. How does all this aid job creation?

Ah so you don't really know. Thanks for clarifying.

Livestock are taking a massive hit due to the horrendously dry spring and summer. Grass yields + therefore hay/silage yields are down etc. Farmers are having to feed winter feed to livestock now, there's a national shortage. Which means the cost of producing each individual livestock goes up whilst the cost of meat doesn't. So they lose money.

Arable have been adversely hit the last few years.

I hate HS2, campaigned against it etc. It has decorated huge swathes of farmland and woodland/nature etc.

Farming background thankyou, you can find out for yourself, you wont believe me, hence the NFU ?

Dry weather yes, costs passed on....the Dairy/cattle/sheep farmers i know are making a fortune and thats great because for years they have not....

One on MN has boasted how much she is making from Lamb prices.

The downside is in inflation, which you will then have a go at Labour over....

If you value the countryside, Reform will remove all protections, see their fracking ideas?
You r concerned about our changing climate? Reform follow Trumps views on this.

No one who values our natural world should be wanting Reform in charge.

"Reform will remove all protections" for the countryside. Link please.
They will reverse the Farming tax.

Developers are buying up farmland to build Raynors houses, The Guardian ran an article a few weeks ago about it.

All the farms around us are now encircled by housing estates and the only people buying farms are developers.

There are huge concerns over the water consumption by the data storage centres. Labour are hardly supporting the natural world.

Do you know what Fracking is? its environmental impact? As a supporter, surely you ve read their manifesto on development, cutting planning restrictions? removing all Green subsidies?
Building detention camps in, i quote "Remote areas of the UK"

No idea what the Farm Tax is.

twistyizzy · 28/08/2025 13:30

" As a supporter, surely you ve read their manifesto"
Ah passive aggressiveness at its finest.

Also "as a supprter" when you know damn well it's my only option to get Labour out because I've said eleven billionty times.

This is very boring.

Why is that Passive Aggressive? its a simple question or is it you know i'm right and have no argument?

I 'll assume you have read their policy ideas and agree with them.

As the next GE isn't for another 4 years, backing Reform now is a bit premature surely?
LD's or the Greens might win in your seat? but i bet you wouldn't vote for either.

LDs and Greens don't field candidates in my constituency. How many times do I bloody need to say this?? It has always been Tories Vs Labour and is now Labour Vs Reform. There are no other options.

I have said this on multiple threads, I didn't realise so many posters lacked basic comprehension.

Until this election I always voted Labour. I've also said that 100s of times.

Like I said, this is now boring me.

Such anger!!

Highly unusual that only option is Lab or Reform, esp 4 years away..... ha ha of course you've always voted Labour....

I simply don't care what you do/don't think. You're a random stranger on the Internet so you're really not worth trying to persuade of anything.

Anger? No. Frustration with you not reading or comprehending, yes.

I'm not the one claiming spurious personal attacks on every post.

No need for any further engagement needed on any thread, on any subject.

It’s about getting rid of Labour. Reform definitely have some dodgy not very well fully thought out policies, but at least they’re not fighting a strange non existent class war from the 1800s where the economy, children’s education and U.K. quality of life are nothing but collateral damage.

I would say Taxes to the Taliban is more than a bit dodgy, understatement of the year!

It's not highly unusual at all, you're just uninformed. It's exactly the same in my constituency.
Same in Rayner's constituency. She too is forecast to lose her seat to Reform.

Yeah it does sound bad, but it’s about weighing up priorities when voting and I’d rather that than education tax on UK children for example. See how it pans out, I don’t really know much about this Taliban thing by the way so can’t really comment.

No need to keep explaining yourself to the ill-informed.
It just shows how out of touch the current crop of Labour and their supporters are from Labour's traditional red wall.

Do we have to fear Reform though is the question?

I can’t see it playing well with Europe which is a worry, especially leaving the ECHR. But there’s an underlying pragmatic approach which I think will see some of the more outlandish plans shelved. No I think Labour is much more of a threat than Reform.

Yes you absolutely should fear Reform. Their polling is phenomenal when you consider that they only have handful of MPs. You really need to grasp that many will vote for Reform because they want Labour out. Irrespective of whatever Farage comes out with over the next few years.

Starmer didn't need policies to win the last election, he just needed to not be a conservative.

No. They’ve peaked too soon. If there was a general election tomorrow I’d be very afraid but time’s not on their side. Four years is an eternity in politics. And they’ll have a four year record of mismanaging/non achievement in councils by 2029.

Not Read the whole thread ( 700 messages ) but anyone buying food in this country , so everyone , has noticed the prices going up .
Can't see how anyone is better off unless they’ve had a massive pay rise but not sure that’d be anything to do with labour gov

But a strong economy makes a country stronger. There will be money to invest in public services, education, infrastructure and to not be in a vulnerable position against bullies like Trump.

6thformoptions · 26/08/2025 21:03

I would however much rather that they tax cash in hand cowboys and the super rich before education. Seems obvious which is more important to me.

But we live in a global world, if you mean by cowboys American MNCs, Trump is threatening to increase tariff against countries like Spain, France for introducing digital tax to be paid by major technology firms as most of them are from US. So increasing tax against those in powerful position is always tricky.
