Is anyone better off since Labour

1000 replies

Luckymum20 · 26/08/2025 20:26

I am not just talking financially but feeling optimistic about the future for children, old age.

With the £22 billion debt now pasing £50 billion.

The increase in Council tax (that they said the wouldn't do). OAPs raid on pensions and no Winter fuel relief. Changes to finance regarding care homes. Utilities up. TV licence up. Food costs up...

I know minimum wage has increased but all costs have increased by a greater amount!

In 2021 minimum wage was almost 30% lower than it is now...

So I ask. Is anyone actually feeling better off, optimistic and pleased with this Government.

Also the October budget of likely to bring more stains on the 'average working man"

YABU - change will happen. It a good thing.

YANBU - not good

Hardly surprising as they’ve been left to clear up the mess from 14 years of Tory shit and Brexit. Instead of running for the hills and just issuing sound bites they’re actually making tough decisions and doing something about it. It’s a long time until election day.

🤣 tough decisions?! Like how they’re going to decrease the national debt that’s rising under them?or why unemployment is up and more businesses at risk of going bust?

bleating 14 years of tories is all well and good but where’s the shoots of improvement? The plan? They’re just bumbling along frantically trying to convince us that they’re getting a grip on illegal immigration.

I don’t really see how Brexit can’t but make us poorer tbh, but 311 billion over 20 years is 15 billion a year and Rachel makes a £35 billion black hole roughly once every 4 months.

I feel slightly better off, I'm about to remortgage after Truss's mini-budget (remember it? The one Nigel Farage vocally supported) and I'm looking forward to having a little extra a month after a hard few years.

I don't expect immediate change. I do like that the NHS isn't in massive decline, more houses being built and that the government doesn't seem to be actively corrupt and giving contracts to mates.

I don't really care how many houses Rayner has, it feels odd to focus on this when most of the tories and Farage are comfortably millionaires anyway.

mellongoose · 27/08/2025 18:13

I’ve just been relieved of my senior role in a small business thanks to the extra costs to business. A direct consequence. Cheers Labour.

This is going over your head isn’t it. It’s fine, one of my daughters is like this with maths as well. Best thing is to give a concrete example:

Say you have 100 ducks and 5 of them
are red and the rest are green. If one red duck leaves the pond because you’re taxing his duckling’s education and his nest or whatever, then that’s a 1% reduction in ducks but a 20% reduction in red ducks. Make sense?

Jesus wept, your poor daughters.

A bit like you and VAT on school fees then?

Ah yes because on a post asking "are you better off under Labour" and my household is worse off due to Education Tax, I'm not allowed to comment am I? Because according to you (Lord of thread police), VAT on school fees has nothing to do with whether someone is better/worse off?
I can back up each and every one of my statements about the taxation of children's education, with evidence and data. Can you?

twistyizzy · 27/08/2025 18:16

ThatWaryOchreQuoter · 27/08/2025 18:02

When I read comments like this, taking pleasure that some children have been forced out of their schools it really just reinforces why Labour have to go. I know they have committed the heinous crime of having net tax payer parents, but they are still children…I think you need to bear that in mind.

Edited

VAT supporters don't care that it's children being impacted because all they hear is the "tax the rich" dogwhistle call. Sod the consequences.

I just feel that Labour and every political party in this country don't have the nation's best interests at heart. It seems like all the political parties are working together to ruin the country. I don't know what's best for the country, but people are definitely way too aggressive on all sides of the political spectrum. I really hope AI evolves enough to put an end to all these arguments.

People on Mumsnet seem to dislike high earners, treating them like punching bags while simultaneously expecting them to be the saviors of the economy by taking too much of their earnings.

I have no idea why so many people on Mumsnet seem to support limiting others' freedom of choice when it comes to private education and healthcare. How would they feel if their freedom to enjoy what their money can buy was taken away? Having internet is a sign of extreme luxury in countless countries around the globe. Check your privilege. Give away all your possessions to the truly needy and stop complaining. I can promise you that the poor won't lend a hand once you're one of them.

People rely on private education and healthcare when state options aren't sufficient. Private services save money for the state. Private services reduce the number of people relying on the state sector, allowing the state sector to have fewer individuals to manage. It's worth remembering that those who pay for private services also pay taxes for the public sector. If they were selfish, they could band together to demand lower taxes for services they don't use. Yet, they continue to contribute for the sake of civility and humanity, supporting those who depend entirely on state services.

Exactly - Brexit has nothing to do with the job market devastation that’s occurred SINCE her budget. April to date has been a catastrophe.

its like it’s still the go to… she’s done twice the annual brexit impact in the last 4-5 months.

I have an adult family member with Downs Syndrome who's now £3k better off since Labour scrapped the fees he was required to pay from his Universal Credit/PIP towards his social care provision.

He also got a £500 payment from the local council towards the cost of essentials, and his parents recieved £250 each last year in carer's payments.

He's been migrated onto Universal Credit from ESA with no fuss whatsoever. The Conservative-run system punished a lot of other older adults we know with DS, autism, Williams syndrome etc, where assessors were trying to catch applicants out with trick questions to reduce their PIP/UC rates.

His day centre has recieved more funding, so they've been able to expand their building, install a sensory room and hire more staff. They have a bigger budget for activities and day trips too. He was able to go to Disneyland this month with other service users, and will be going to Germany to see the Christmas markets in December and Dublin in the new year.

Can't complain. The Labour council are also building new residential housing in our area for 80 adults with LDs, after 15 years of Tory underfunding and cuts. They had the gall to try to cut a £70k PA transport service for 16-25 year olds with severe LDs by claiming it was 'unaffordable', and also attempted to cut my relative's care budget during Covid - while blowing millions on migrants, dodgy Covid loans and ridiculous parking schemes.

Adults with LDs have been at the bottom of every political manifesto since time immorial, so hopefully Labour will hold our council for decades to come. The last thing we need is a neo nazi Reform-Con coalition getting in and cutting services again.

Timeforabitofpeace · 27/08/2025 18:51

@mrshohoIm assuming you mean illegal immigration. Obviously many immigrants in the uk are here because of work (invited and definitely needed), study and settled (including EU). The economy depends on them. If migrants were deported from many parts of the uk, the NHS would collapse (although for some, not me, maybe that’s a hidden benefit).

I think it’s a scandal and outrageous to talk about deporting afghans , because most of them here are here because they helped the uk out. We KNOW they’d be killed if returned, and if anyone votes for anyone who wants to do that, they themselves will have blood on their hands.

Yes, closer ties with Europe, why anyone would think it is a good idea to destroy those once and for all and give our taxes to the Taliban is beyond me!

The Taliban that killed our boys, 100s of them.....

Lest we forget hey Nige you fucking Traitor

I think it will be an economic disaster if they last the remaining four years! Every business I have knowledge of, from one man bands to 2k employees are really feeling it.

In our household the teenagers PT jobs wages have increased, but their hours have been cut to almost zero as the small businesses they work for are struggling so much.

The UK should follow suit and give tax incentives for people going private re education, healthcare, etc. It saves the taxpayer, so it makes sense. However, when you have politicians running the country who only care about politics of envy, there's no chance of it happening here. After all, we've got to "punish the rich" havn't we, even if it means the country is poorer overall - we have to have equality even if that means lower standards for all!
