Is anyone better off since Labour

Luckymum20 · 26/08/2025 20:26

I am not just talking financially but feeling optimistic about the future for children, old age.

With the £22 billion debt now pasing £50 billion.

The increase in Council tax (that they said the wouldn't do). OAPs raid on pensions and no Winter fuel relief. Changes to finance regarding care homes. Utilities up. TV licence up. Food costs up...

I know minimum wage has increased but all costs have increased by a greater amount!

In 2021 minimum wage was almost 30% lower than it is now...

So I ask. Is anyone actually feeling better off, optimistic and pleased with this Government.

Also the October budget of likely to bring more stains on the 'average working man"

YABU - change will happen. It a good thing.

YANBU - not good

Net worth - which is the definition of a millionaire - and high earners who pay income tax are completely different categories of people. You’re conflating them.

So first it was debunked, then its happening but its not an exodus and now its exodus but it doesn’t matter.

How you extrapolate that from what I posted will be an eternal mystery.

Which country as don't know if you know this but Scandanvia is not one country?

Would you prefer the word Nordic?

Not eternal surely, just the time it takes to read the thread.

Are you a fictional writer as you seem adept in your use of poetic licence. What's your agenda? Why are you so fixated on having us believe that the 5 people who paid 50 billion in tax have left the UK!

No, I'd prefer you to stop doing the dizzy dance of vagueness and tell us all the specific country you refer to as Scandanvia is not one country.

FFS Denmark, Norway and Sweden. When people say Europe or UK, do you expect them to list all the countries? If you’ve got a point then make it

I literally have no idea what you are talking about, you appear to have jumped on this thread in quite an excited and confused state.

You quoted a tax rate and didn't say which country that applies to just said some vague rubbish to enrage people and encourage them to feel like victims. What specific country does that tax rate that you have quoted belong to?

BumpyWinds · 27/08/2025 14:20

Nope. Not happy with how small businesses are being impacted so severely and can't see it getting any better, only worse.

Our corporation tax bill is up 20% on the same profit levels (a Tory policy) and this year our NI bill is 20% more than in previous years (Labour increase). At least that will help reduce the CT bill a bit.

Our clients are all similarly suffering which means they're struggling to pay our fees.

Two of our staff members left earlier this year and we won't be replacing them. If they hadn't moved on to other jobs we'd have been looking to make some people redundant to save the costs.

I'm not sure how the economy is supposed to improve when so many businesses are suffering so much.

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/hmrc-tax-and-nics-receipts-for-the-uk shows that the tax take for April to July this year is £19.9bn more than the same period last year. £8.4bn of that was in July alone.

But the black hole is getting wider... Apparently.

Hardly surprising as they’ve been left to clear up the mess from 14 years of Tory shit and Brexit. Instead of running for the hills and just issuing sound bites they’re actually making tough decisions and doing something about it. It’s a long time until election day.

Snowmanmarryme · 27/08/2025 14:22

Sweden.

£0-approx £60k is taxes at 32%. Anything over that is taxed at 52%.

Alexandra2001 · 27/08/2025 14:24

No better or worse off.

None of my taxes have gone up, council tax has to go up, how else is social care paid for? bins collected? or some pot holes repaired?

Some people want something for nothing.

Snowmanmarryme · 27/08/2025 14:24

Denmark and Norway tax rates are higher but more complicated to describe.

Goldenbear · 27/08/2025 14:33

Nothing has really changed for us either, except high water bills that are needed to fix failing infrastructure that went to the wayside under the Tory government.

Yes another Tory failure, allowed us to be charged for infrastructure improvements but let the water industry give them away in dividends....

No accountability.

gegs73 · 27/08/2025 14:40

I’m personally about the same no worse. It got a lot worse with the Liz Truss mess causing interest rates to rise affecting my mortgage. Also worse when petrol prices starting rising, then food hikes, energy costs etc. That was all happening well before labour got into power so I don’t hold them responsible. Obviously I want them to work to improve this, but it’s not going to happen overnight.

Since labours been in, it’s benefitted my DSs, one 18 and the other 21. With bits of agency work they’ve been doing, the increase in minimum wage has meant they’ve been paid more than they otherwise would of been. They still can’t buy a house or rent somewhere affordable should they choose to do so but that’s the same whoever is in power - labour again hasn’t had long to do anything about it.

I feel more optimistic under this lot than the conservatives. They’re definitely not getting everything right but I do think they’re trying to do the right thing more times than not. I also like that amongst other things they’re trying to build closer ties with Europe again.

I’m not disillusioned with labour per say more with politics on the whole. When I vote, I do so rather to help block parties I don’t want in charge getting in than being wholeheartedly behind who I’m voting for. I would much prefer proportional representation as the parties would have to collaborate for the greater good and would maybe look at long term rather than short term solutions.

I hope those in receipt of the dividends aren't part of this mass exodus of rich people paying every penny of tax!

Yes, closer ties with Europe, why anyone would think it is a good idea to destroy those once and for all and give our taxes to the Taliban is beyond me!

Well hold tight, yours and everybody else’s electricity bill will be rising very soon thanks to Milliband and his green initiative.

No. Inflation is rising. It was obviously extremely high during Covid but it was decreasing nicely. Since Labour got in, it is rising and will continue to do so. If the IMF get called in, and I think they will be, then a shit show of epic proportions is coming. We cannot afford to carry on the way we are.

where are you getting that inflation is rising?
