To ask if you'll be attending the anti fascism protest on 13 September

I'd like to go in solidarity with like minded people, but worry about it turning violent. I won't be taking my children and will likely be going alone. Lots of people I know detest Tommy Robinson but will stay away due to the likelihood of trouble, but I really want to help send a message that racism and hatred won't win. Is anyone here considering going, or decided to stay away?

It’s not “fair game” though, is it? People are in uproar about the word — including you right now. It’s actually hard to call someone a “gammon” without immediately being called a racist, so I’d say the scales are pretty even.
And for the record, I do agree with you that there’s hypocrisy involved. I’m just observing it. It’s a tale as old as time: the bully dishes it out relentlessly, but the moment they get a taste of their own medicine, they suddenly recast themselves as the victim.

Of course it's fair game. MN has kept the posts up despite pp saying they had reported it twice!

Yet I know women that have been called a "Karen" and exhibit none of the behaviour. They were white, And the same for men and "gammon".

Yes I am. And who was it that said it?

Children’s author Ben Davis tells The Independent that he coined the term with a tweet composed while watching coverage of the 2017 election result:

Davis writes that he intended the remark as a throwaway joke, aimed at sending up blustering “golf club” types,

I'm the one who coined the term gammon – and now I deeply regret it

Gammon has been seized upon by the radical left. It feels a little nastier. More weaponised. I’ve seen a couple of things which seemed classist, which was odd because to me, gammons were middle class golf club types

I watched Triggernometry's interview of Tommy Robinson recently. Illuminating, I recommend you watch it, too.

Regarding the event, I wouldn't feel safe attending, either. With public events like this anyone with an axe to grind can attend with a view to causing trouble and spoiling it. Antifa are off the wall violent thugs, very scary guys. I have experience with them at Let Women Speak events [shudder]. If you decide to attend, have an exit strategy.

whilst i'm not discrediting that you know women that have accepted being called Karen without a fuss, I know many who haven't.

Calling someone a ‘Karen’ is ‘borderline racist, sexist and ageist’, tribunal says | Employment tribunals | The Guardian

would you accept being called a Karen? Or would you shrug it off. I'm not being combative, I am just asking.

I didn't say that they accepted it without a fuss, I said that they where called it for being a white female.

I pick people up for using the term in the same way that I do "gammon".

yeah okay, fair enough.

What’s the behaviour someone has to exhibit to be called a Karen?

What’s the behaviour someone has to exhibit to be called a Gammon?

And what’s the behaviour someone has to exhibit to be called a racial slur other than simply being born the wrong race or colour?

So a left socialist who used it to laugh at white middle aged brexiteers but has since regretted it. And acknowledging that it has since been used in a nasty classist way.

My point is that you shouldn't be using either as they are racist, sexist and ageist.

As for

You would have to ask those on here that believe that its ok to use a racist, sexist and ageist slur.

yes i know that's your point and I'm agreeing with it - but-

please explain what you think makes people use the word gammon, the word karen, and why it's the same as simply calling somone a racial slur that hasn't exhibited any behaviour other than having more melanin

can you answer that question?

LakieLady · 31/08/2025 18:10

Serpentstooth · 31/08/2025 12:32

You've not heard of Henry VIII and the Reformation then?

Henry VIII wasn't king until the early 16th century, and Martin Luther didn't publish his 95 Theses (commonly held to kick off the Reformation) until later in the 16th century.

So in your view, it’s ok to use a racist slur if you don’t like the behaviour of the person?

It’s quite amazing the lengths some ‘anti- racists’ will go to to justify being racist.

No, I’m asking what commonly warrants the term Gammon or Karen. Clue: you don’t get called either just for randomly walking down the street.
I’m not saying it’s “okay” — I’m asking what behaviour typically earns those labels, and how that compares to traditional racial slurs, which in most cases require nothing more than simply existing.
I’m not “going to lengths,” and the idea that I’m racist couldn’t be further from the truth — sorry to rain on your parade. I’m literally just asking the question. A bit like how anti-migration campaigners are “just asking” for refugees to be mass-deported. 💁

Ffs! A white woman who has a voice and says things that others don't agree with is often sneered at and called 'a karen'. Just for being white, female and existing.

A pp used the term gammon to describe people who may be attending a protest march. Ask them what they mean by it?

IneedAniffler · 31/08/2025 18:24

FrippEnos · 31/08/2025 18:20

The answer is in the question.

So then you agree — Karen and Gammon are, even if racist, actually behaviour-based labels. They’re not the same as traditional racial slurs, which target nothing but someone’s skin colour or heritage.

There’s a clear difference. At least we’ve finally established some nuance.

That is quite a leap from what I posted.

And no I don't agree.

Racism is racism, which seems to be a novel view on here for some people.

Not a leap at all, it’s literally following the discussion we’ve been having. We’ve made it this far, so don’t rubbish your points or mine. I’m not.
You compared Gammon and Karen to racial slurs. I asked you to explain the difference in what warrants them, because the distinction is obvious: one is tied to specific behaviour, the other requires nothing more than existing in a certain skin.
Collapsing everything into “racism is racism” is lazy. It erases the very real difference between mocking someone’s conduct (with race often secondary) and targeting someone’s race outright.
You might not like the nuance, but it’s there whether you acknowledge it or not.

You've made me realise that the people most likely to get called “gammon” whether rightly or wrongly are the ones endlessly bleating about “free speech,” “you can’t say anything anymore,” “everything’s gone woke,” “get everyone out of my country,” “I don’t like all this new language.”

You seem to be making huge generalisations about behaviour, then using it to justify how being racist to white men is ‘clearly different’ (and presumably by the arguments you are making not as bad) as being racist with ‘traditional racial slurs’.

Do you think PP was justified in making a sweeping generalisation and racial slur about the white men attending a Free Speech event or do you disagree with all racial slurs?

I’m looking forward to September 13th. Stop illegal immugration and protect our children from further abuse. It is all our jobs to protect the most vulnerable. Great to see all the flags flying far and wide now

Immugration... Oh god I thought this was a post taking the piss out of how thick TR's supporters are, but I think it's real 😬

If you’d been following with a bit more care, you’d see I don’t agree with the term Gammon. I’ve said that repeatedly — I’ve only been pointing out the distinction between behaviour-based insults and traditional racial slurs. That’s not the same thing as endorsing them.

I don't agree with PP, I have said that too.

While we’re at it — do they consider being called gammon part of the “free speech” they’re supposedly defending, or not? Because it’s funny how quickly “free speech” shrinks when the words are aimed back at them.
