AIBU to do a week in Rhodes with only underseat baggage?

Having a mild wobble. Going to Rhodes next week with DH and we only booked underseat cabin luggage. I'm pretty experienced at packing light and only hand luggage/underseat luggage, but I've just realised that previous underseat only trips were 4-5 day city breaks with no swimstuff needed and maybe I've been a bit over optimistic!

Holiday is a AI in Rhodes. We've done Rhodes before, so we're mostly planning on just some much needed R&R by the pool - but will likely also do a couple of days out (Lindos, Rhodes Town) plus will likely eat out often in the evenings as we love Greek Tavernas!

Rather helpfully, I'm really low maintenance. So I won't require make-up, skin care stuff, specialist hair care stuff or any kind of hair styling equipment. Soap, shampoo, hairbrush, toothbrush and deodorant pretty much covers my needs!

We also have specialist underseat storage bags which use every cm of space and compression packing cubes, plus we're travelling EasyJet who are slightly more generous on underseat space than RyanAir and some others.

So here's my plan - is it doable?

Stuff between DH and I (will need to fit in across the 2 x bags)
2 x suncream
1 x bar of olive oil soap
1 x shampoo/conditioner all in one.
Toothbrushes & toothpaste
Deodorant
Multway travel plug plus charging cables
Packaway rucksack.
Mosquito repellent
Passport/Travel Docs/Euros etc

My stuff:
3 x swimsuits/bikinis
1 x kaftan type coverup
1 x sarong
1 pair foldable beach socks
2 x hamman towels
1 x flipflops
2 x vest tops
3 x dresses
1 x shorts
7 x knickers (including some chub rub ones)
2 x bras
1 x disposable razor
1 x hairbrush with elastics round handle
1 x tablet with preloaded ebooks/audiobooks/films etc
1 x disposable razor
1 x phone in waterproof case on lanyard round my neck

I'm planning to travel in wide leg trousers/loose tshirt/cardi/comfy walking sandals, which I can re-use as necessary throughout the week.

Is this enough stuff for the week?

Your liquids might not be OK.

jeaux90 · 26/08/2025 11:36

Check the hotel, they probably provide shampoo, conditioner so you can probably ditch those.

They are. Our airport has the fancy new scanners and we can take up to 2ltrs of liquids, which don't need to be in under 100ml bottles. We're happy to ditch anything that's left at the other end if it's not the same at Rhodes Airport (which I expect it won't be).

And also the towels, I’d assume they are provided

I will check, but I'm not sure if they'll provide pool/beach towels? I expect there are bath towels for use in the bathroom. Hamman towels fold up super small anyway.

I’d also take some hand wash liquid. I think it’ll be plenty. I find I want to wear the same things over and over on holiday and there’s always stuff you don’t wear anyway. Maybe some string and a couple of pegs as well

beecrazy · 26/08/2025 11:44

My sister and I do a week away every so often and only take underseat luggage. We share shampoo, toothpaste etc, wear a light jacket with pockets for stuff that would usually be in a handbag and have phone, passport and credit card in one of those flat zipped things round our necks under the jacket. Never had a problem.

FrenchandSaunders · 26/08/2025 11:45

I think that sounds fine ... we did a week in Ibiza with hand luggage. Just wore stuff two/three times or rinsed it out. We were meant to be there 3 nights and then extended it. You can always buy a couple of cheap tops/dresses out there.

FrenchandSaunders · 26/08/2025 11:45

Most of the day we were in swimming stuff so only changing for the evening ... which is only worn for a few hours.

itsabeautifuldayjuly · 26/08/2025 11:46

Sounds fine! i usually pack super light (family of 4, we need 2 carry on luggage type cases for 1 week holiday), and your plan sounds fine. potentially swop one bikini for a t-shirt

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 26/08/2025 11:50

Looks fine to me. The only thing I'd add is a rechargeable battery pack. It's a long flight and you'll need your phone on arrival.

IDontHateRainbows · 26/08/2025 11:51

Can you buy most of what you need there ?

TofuEater · 26/08/2025 11:51

I have done 10 days on Easyjet underseat luggage. It's no trouble if you rinse things out every night and don't expect to take 10 of everything

GFBurger · 26/08/2025 11:51

I would check with those hotel what they provide in the rooms. In our last AI they had mosquito repellent, shampoo, conditioner, soap, body lotion, pool towels.

And I am sure a big resort has a shop for whatever the room doesn’t provide - including Suncream, deodorant and razors. Or some nice pharmacies or supermarkets near by.

Partner and I doing a week in Corfu and I'm worrying about sharing one hold case between us! Following this closely.

Parksinyork · 26/08/2025 11:55

I doubt you will be able to take razor in hand luggage.

Oh really? I'll check. Not a big deal to buy over there though.

Buy your toiletries there, that'll take a huge chunk of space away otherwise. OK it might cost a few bob, but it makes sense. Otherwise I think it's fine for your minimal needs.

TBH I wouldn't even try to get by for a week abroad with an underseat only, it would do my head in. Would you consider checking even one bag in or paying for one overhead 10kg bag between you. You can still bring your underseat bags aswell.

Definitely check what's provided - the last AI I went to in Greece provided pool towels, shower gel, and 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner.

wuminzo · 26/08/2025 12:04

What happens if you find some lovely stuff to buy in the local market and want to bring it back? I find that is one of the better aspects of being in a different country!

crossedlines · 26/08/2025 12:04

Looks absolutely fine to me, in fact I’d take less than that, just 2 swim suits and one towel as things dry so fast. I’d also wait and see if shampoo and conditioner are provided and if not, buy there.
I think razors are fine if they have a fixed blade. I would only take one though!

OversteppingEx · 26/08/2025 12:04

Buy Dr Beckmann laundry detergent sheets. You can get them from amazon. I take a couple with me and just hand-wash the odd item as I go.

I’ve never mastered the art of packing light, so these kind of threads fascinate me!

wuminzo · 26/08/2025 12:06

How much would it cost to pay for one overhead cabin case? I'd do that and not stress. It's a holiday not a survival course.

It varies from airline to airline, but I recently saw prices of £14.99 for a 10kg cabin case, and £21.99 to check a suitcase into the hold. It hardly breaks the bank!
