AIBU to do a week in Rhodes with only underseat baggage?

Having a mild wobble. Going to Rhodes next week with DH and we only booked underseat cabin luggage. I'm pretty experienced at packing light and only hand luggage/underseat luggage, but I've just realised that previous underseat only trips were 4-5 day city breaks with no swimstuff needed and maybe I've been a bit over optimistic!

Holiday is a AI in Rhodes. We've done Rhodes before, so we're mostly planning on just some much needed R&R by the pool - but will likely also do a couple of days out (Lindos, Rhodes Town) plus will likely eat out often in the evenings as we love Greek Tavernas!

Rather helpfully, I'm really low maintenance. So I won't require make-up, skin care stuff, specialist hair care stuff or any kind of hair styling equipment. Soap, shampoo, hairbrush, toothbrush and deodorant pretty much covers my needs!

We also have specialist underseat storage bags which use every cm of space and compression packing cubes, plus we're travelling EasyJet who are slightly more generous on underseat space than RyanAir and some others.

So here's my plan - is it doable?

Stuff between DH and I (will need to fit in across the 2 x bags)
2 x suncream
1 x bar of olive oil soap
1 x shampoo/conditioner all in one.
Toothbrushes & toothpaste
Deodorant
Multway travel plug plus charging cables
Packaway rucksack.
Mosquito repellent
Passport/Travel Docs/Euros etc

My stuff:
3 x swimsuits/bikinis
1 x kaftan type coverup
1 x sarong
1 pair foldable beach socks
2 x hamman towels
1 x flipflops
2 x vest tops
3 x dresses
1 x shorts
7 x knickers (including some chub rub ones)
2 x bras
1 x disposable razor
1 x hairbrush with elastics round handle
1 x tablet with preloaded ebooks/audiobooks/films etc
1 x disposable razor
1 x phone in waterproof case on lanyard round my neck

I'm planning to travel in wide leg trousers/loose tshirt/cardi/comfy walking sandals, which I can re-use as necessary throughout the week.

Is this enough stuff for the week?

I doubt you will be able to take razor in hand luggage.

I've bought disposable razors in duty free shops loads of times.

As BA, along with many airlines, include disposable razors in their mens’s amenity kits I expect that a razor is fine. And to the OP, my late husband and I often did a three week trip to Australia via Hong Kong hand luggage only. Admittedly in First, which has a generous carry on allowance, but you’ll be fine. Hotels have laundry services, so don’t forget to make use of that and factor it into your packing! Have a wonderful holiday xx

It varies from airline to airline, but I recently saw prices of £14.99 for a 10kg cabin case, and £21.99 to check a suitcase into the hold. It hardly breaks the bank!

Exactly! Stressing to pack as minimally as possible to save a few bob like that is not worth it IMO.

SeaShellsSanctuary1 · 26/08/2025 12:11

The only other thing I would add is a overhead locker bag for or about £30.

Why bother having a trip abroad then having a wobble over what is relatively a small amount of money that allows you not to have a wobbly head

TigerRag · 26/08/2025 12:12

Why 2 lots of suncream?

Sidebeforeself · 26/08/2025 12:12

Well Im off to Canada shortly for a fortnight with hand luggage only!. Its easy if you dont mind lots of rewearing.

Yes but thats after security?

BMW6 · 26/08/2025 12:14

When I used to holiday solo I always only took one small case that fit in the overhead locker or under seat.

I wore the bulkiest items to travel in.

It's really doable.

Do you mean a cabin size case for the overhead + an underseat bag? If so, I also manage perfectly on that for similar trip durations. In OP's situation there is a relatively small charge for the overhead case. I'd do that instead of stressing about what fits in the underseat bag!

kitchenplans · 26/08/2025 12:17

Honestly, it's not about the money! We've always just done hand luggage as mostly we travel pretty independently and it's easier to pack light so we can easily carry it, and not have to wait for hold luggage. I just went a bit into autopilot mode and forgot that the hand luggage allowance was much less now than it was the last time we did a package style holiday.

We've already checked in - so faffy to add a case now. We definitely wouldn't need a hold case, but I think next time I'd probably add an overhead locker case as well.

Disposable razors are allowed in hand luggage for security scans.

Douchey · 26/08/2025 12:18

Love minimalist packing. If things get too tight, i'd ditch the sunscreen (buy on the other side) and towels (use hotels).

BeaLola · 26/08/2025 12:18

I flew easyJet recently (I had a shared hold suitcase with DH as going for 2 weeks)

What I did notice was lots of people have a duty free or boots bag with purchased goods at airport on top of their underseat bag which they all put in the overhead lockers .

Why 2 lots of suncream?

We're both blond(e) with pale skin. We need 2 lots! They're 2 x 200ml sprays. We'll get through that in a week.

I can easily do a two-week holiday with hand luggage. You'll be fine!

Cuttlefisher · 26/08/2025 12:22

Ditch all toiletries and do an online Boots order with everything you need, to be delivered to Boots in the departures area (click and collect). You’re allowed to take stuff bought in departures on board separately.

honeylulu · 26/08/2025 12:22

I've done a week in Rhodes with just hand luggage and it was fine. Check with the airline allowance but with some you can travel with a really decent size rucksack etc.

The good thing about "hot" holidays is that the necessary clothing tends to be small and light. I tend to wear shorts and vests in the day and dresses in the evening (alternating between 2-3 outfits) and taking hand-wash detergent in case anything gets too sweaty to rewear. I will wear sandals or trainers on the plane and just pack a pair of flip flops. I think you can lose the towels unless they are very minimal in size (the dock and bay ones are good) as you probably won't need them.

My make up bag takes up quite a space so if you don't need that then even better!

KrisAkabusi · 26/08/2025 12:22

I'd say not a chance. There's a huge difference between hand luggage and underseat luggage. If you're travelling with Ryanair, their actual physical underseat space is tiny. As is their underseat bag size. It's only supposed to be around A4 size, so a small handbag or laptop bag size. Not something with all you have listed.

I mean a small handbag and one travel bag which will go either under the seat or above depending on room available. I use The Foldie bag - its excellent.

We have specialist underseat luggage bags designed for EasyJet and compliant with their regulations. They're surprisingly generously sized when they're designed to make use of the full space allowance (and they slip under the seats easily).

I'm not worried about fitting all the things I've listed into our underseat luggage bags (or them fitting under the seats), I'm more worried about whether I have enough clothes and stuff for the week. I think some travel wash, pegs and string might be a good idea as PPs have suggested.

You could do it easily. Like you I'm low maintenance so no cosmetics, hair styling g thingies etc. A holiday for me doesn't include dressing up or having loads of outfit options so under seat is fine.
2 prs shorts,1 dress,3 T shirts, 1 swimming costume, 4 knickers 2 bras, plus travel outfit of long sleeved shirt, cardi and loose trousers and sandals. Washing leaves/ sheet, toothpaste, soap, shampoo bar, deodorant, sun cream.
Done.

MMAMPWGHAP · 26/08/2025 12:28

I did 2.5 weeks round Germany with that allowance inc a swimsuit and microfibre towel. Easily doable.

BUMCHEESE · 26/08/2025 12:28

I did a week somewhere hot recently with hand luggage only. Took one small towel and similar clothes to your list. (Not sure why you need two towels). I had room in my bag and didn't wear everything!

Chimchar · 26/08/2025 12:30

We just did a week in Barcelona with only an underseat rucksack each. I carried my crossbody bum bag too with my phone and passports in it and left that on me. It was tight but very doable.
have a great trip!
