AIBU to do a week in Rhodes with only underseat baggage?

Having a mild wobble. Going to Rhodes next week with DH and we only booked underseat cabin luggage. I'm pretty experienced at packing light and only hand luggage/underseat luggage, but I've just realised that previous underseat only trips were 4-5 day city breaks with no swimstuff needed and maybe I've been a bit over optimistic!

Holiday is a AI in Rhodes. We've done Rhodes before, so we're mostly planning on just some much needed R&R by the pool - but will likely also do a couple of days out (Lindos, Rhodes Town) plus will likely eat out often in the evenings as we love Greek Tavernas!

Rather helpfully, I'm really low maintenance. So I won't require make-up, skin care stuff, specialist hair care stuff or any kind of hair styling equipment. Soap, shampoo, hairbrush, toothbrush and deodorant pretty much covers my needs!

We also have specialist underseat storage bags which use every cm of space and compression packing cubes, plus we're travelling EasyJet who are slightly more generous on underseat space than RyanAir and some others.

So here's my plan - is it doable?

Stuff between DH and I (will need to fit in across the 2 x bags)
2 x suncream
1 x bar of olive oil soap
1 x shampoo/conditioner all in one.
Toothbrushes & toothpaste
Deodorant
Multway travel plug plus charging cables
Packaway rucksack.
Mosquito repellent
Passport/Travel Docs/Euros etc

My stuff:
3 x swimsuits/bikinis
1 x kaftan type coverup
1 x sarong
1 pair foldable beach socks
2 x hamman towels
1 x flipflops
2 x vest tops
3 x dresses
1 x shorts
7 x knickers (including some chub rub ones)
2 x bras
1 x disposable razor
1 x hairbrush with elastics round handle
1 x tablet with preloaded ebooks/audiobooks/films etc
1 x disposable razor
1 x phone in waterproof case on lanyard round my neck

I'm planning to travel in wide leg trousers/loose tshirt/cardi/comfy walking sandals, which I can re-use as necessary throughout the week.

Is this enough stuff for the week?

It's this (in black, but pics easier to see in pink). Flying Easyjet, so can use it extended. We use compression packing cubes inside, so can fit loads in.

Thank you!

Be sure you have soap to wash out clothes with. Hand soap or shampoo can work but take laundry soap if you feel you need it.

BankHolidayer · 26/08/2025 20:36

Good on you. I’d reduce to two swimwear items and one spare pair of knickers (wash through each day). Home Bargains sells the laundry sheets and a small tube of effective bite ease though I can’t remember its name. Safety pins can hold curtains together and come in handy for clothes if needed rather than pegs.

Sidebeforeself · 26/08/2025 20:55

I admit although I’m cabin baggage only I must admit I take a pair of knickers for everyday . I will sacrifice an item of clothing for fresh knickers!

I will check, but I'm not sure if they'll provide pool/beach towels? I expect there are bath towels for use in the bathroom. Hamman towels fold up super small anyway.

I would be very surprised if they didnt provide pool towels.

WomenInCouncils · 26/08/2025 21:13

Broadly fine I think. What are you sleeping in? I’d be tempted to ditch the toiletries and buy out there along with a swimsuit in favour of another warm thing - greek evenings can get cold!

I'm taking 7 knicks for 7 days.

Why will she need her phone on arrival? Switch off phone on flight, presumably. Then she's on holiday - phone will be in the hotel safe most of the time.

Car hire docs, tickets to show immigration, directions to the hotel/airbnb, Apple Pay.

Off the top of my head. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Actually PP is right. Phones will be switched off on flight (so will remain charged), and no really need for them at airport on arrive. But thanks for the tip, might be helpful for others.

No problem. But I would be ordering your cosmetics from boots at the airport. They let you take that as well as your luggage.

im surprised by the allowance to take large liquids. I’ve flown through 6 different airports this past year and some of them are no longer scanning but you do have to have under 100ml bottles.

In fairness, I don't think they're openly advertising the no need for 100ml bottles yet. It's a major London Airport. We know for sure as its part of a family members job.(and it's all over our local fb pages!)

I just took 18 different dresses for evening meals on our one week holiday. It was ridiculous 🙈 I panic and like options. I only wore 1/4 of what I took overall.

I recently flew from Stansted where they have the new scanners so no need to put liquids in the plastic bag etc, however my bag was searched and they took out a bottle which was 125ml and confiscated it.

The variation is odd. Newcastle has had new scanners for ages, changed the size rules, but went back to the 100mls rule but not in bags. We flew from Edinburgh a few weeks ago, up to 2l containers of fluids, no bags no rules really

I recently returned from Zante and they were really strict on liquids and it was the little plastic bags there too.

One year I packed 20 dresses and 10 books!

This year I packed two different yoga outfits as I read they did a morning and evening class. I don’t even like yoga.

InterloperMum · 27/08/2025 08:13

I love this minimalist approach!
Sounds do-able, providing you can fit it all in. However, I'd take smaller size bottles of toiletries to save space.
I'd also lose a bikini. I recently went to Greece and wore the same bikini and sarong most days. You can rinse out swimwear at the end of each day.
Have a great trip!

I’d rather pay for extra luggage than wash clothes in a sink on my holiday

Oh really? I'll check. Not a big deal to buy over there though.

you can take a razor in hand luggage

BareGrylls · 27/08/2025 09:05

@VeryStressedMum Same. It sucks the fun out of a holiday. I like to stay in good hotels and have nice things on holiday. I don't need to wash pants out every night for the sake of saving a few £. I can think of better ways to cut the cost of a holiday.
It's also not true that it saves time at the airport. We travel three times a year and in the last few years by the time we cleared passports the luggage is waiting.
If you have to catch a transfer coach you are waiting for the slowest person so we get a taxi.

Also flying with just a small bag rather than carting wheelie cases on and off the plane is much more pleasant.
I get that people are hard up and trying to save money but why pretend it's because you prefer it.

apetol · 27/08/2025 09:20

I’m a underseat traveller as well. Just did 11 nights in Spain using Ryan air. We do this all the time.

Travelled in a dress and trainers( sometimes take a cardigan but didn’t this time as knew it would be hot)

Took-
2 swimsuits
2 sarongs
6 dresses( 2 were beach type ones)
2 sandals
1 fit flops
2 pairs of knickers
1 bra
Decanted make up products, toothbrush, mini dental floss, tube of facial spf, mini hairbrush
nightshirt
spare pair of trainers socks
small crossbody bag
Put everything in compression packing cube. Put cube in beach type bag to use when there.
4 paperbacks in WH Smith, looks like it’s duty free.
Bought additional toiletries there. Dh had 2 100ml factor 50s to start us off.

We book villas so have a washing machine but happy to hand wash bits.

its liberating not having to check in a bag and wait for it!😀

JimmyGiraffe · 27/08/2025 09:21

I am currently at a small Greek airport waiting to fly home, even here they have new scanners, so no need to unpack all your hand luggage.

i have often wondered about doing a Boots click and collect at an airport - has anyone had success with this? And would you have to fit this into your hand luggage, or can you take it on board as "extra"?

Do you not understand that some people have different preferences to you?

I prefer hand luggage only and find it easier/better than hold luggage.

Money is not even slightly part of the decision making process.

I understand that some people prefer hold luggage, and that is also fine.

Why do you know people are pretending its not about money? Im not. And you cant say things like “it’s not true “ that it saves time. How can you possibly know that in every case? Yes, sometimes your luggage will be waiting for you, but other times you are hanging around.

I dont have to catch a coach so Im not slowed down by other people.

If money isn’t the reason why not add a cabin bag?
