For those of you who think the flags and roundabout paintings are tacky...

What do you make of this house?

Don’t knock it op, it’s a good way to tell where the dickheads live so you can avoid them.

What would you call the board?

I’m thinking something like

Flag Talk
England Flag Appearances
National Symbolism Discussion

Fun with Flags?

@Alltheprettyseahorses

I think someone feeling unease and even fear at the motivation behind flags right now is a little more than just being offended.

JustSawJohnny · 27/08/2025 00:11

Christ, their poor neighbours.

Really? I don't think there's any fear and nor does there need to be. Allegations of fear are nothing more than controlling via emotional blackmail when 'chavtastic' doesn't work. You can't tell people not to fly their own country's flag, that's ridiculous.

You’re attitude is very dismissive. Some people do feel fearful, just because you don’t experience something personally doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. As a woman there are things in your life you’ve experienced that a man won’t experience and can’t fully understand, does that make your experiences any less real? Of course it doesn’t. Because someone can’t just swoop in and tell you how you feel.

Our identity, understanding and experiences help inform how we experience the world. Not everybody can have every experience so we try to understand things by listening to others. If you don’t understand something it’s ok to not voice an opinion about it.

Emotional blackmail to who? The people involved in this latest round of flag flying couldn’t care less about how their actions makes anyone feel so what would be the point of that.

sandgrown · 27/08/2025 07:02

Someone has attached a Union Jack to the telegraph pole at the bottom of my cul de sac . I really object to this as it makes the whole street appear racist.

Ilovegerardway · 27/08/2025 07:08

I now have one on the lamppost outside my house. They are all down our (long, one of the roads into town) street now. I came home yesterday and there they were. The area is a shit pit anyway, but now it just looks worse. They aren’t even level with each other, so it’s doing my head in for that reason too.

NotABrokenClock · 27/08/2025 08:02

Some of the posts here are great examplea of the part of the reason why the overreaction na sea of flags are happening...

I understand perfectly. Do you care how you make people feel? Do the posters who write snide, snobby insults for doing something that is genuinely harmless care how they make people feel? The answer is clearly no.

In the end, you can only make yourself happy. You don't want a flag? Don't put one up. If you don't understand why people want a flag, as you say it's fair not to voice an opinion about it. Live and let live is a wonderful philosophy.

Why does it make the area look racist? It's the British flag. Are all flags racist or just our own?

Just our own sadly, we’ve got the far right to thank for that.

Their house their choice!
Would I want it next door? No probably not.....but do I have the energy to get upset about about other people's tacky house decor .... no!

I disagree. We've got the section of the middle-class who with what they believe are the right™️ left-wing, worldly and cosmopolitan opinions to thank for it. They class patriotism as something working-class and common as shown by the extremely unpleasant insults that posters feel emboldened to throw around on this thread so would like to shame it out of people, or maybe just enjoy the opportunity to have 2 minutes of hate at one of the few remaining targets for bigotry now that we all agree racism is bad.

Well if you do understand and just don’t give a shit then there’s no point continuing this conversation. It’s not genuinely harmless which is the point you’re choosing to ignore with every single response you write.

Yes I do care about other people, I don’t live in the world alone. Live and let live isn't limitless, e.g. if how you want to live is to stir up hatred and intolerance then people shouldn’t be expected to just take it on the chin.

A flag is genuinely harmless and all the shitstirring is from the anti-flag obsessives. Just look at this nasty thread and the vile names the poor owner of that house is being called. There's no need. Like I said, it's the acceptable hate now for a certain type of person.

“Live and let live is a wonderful philosophy “

//

It certainly is. But many people joining in with Raising the Colours or whatever it’s called are doing it because they are racist and do want to send a message to non native and/or dark skinned people that they aren’t welcome in this country. They only believe in the above philosophy when it’s applied to themselves and their freedoms.

And to suggest this isn’t the case is highly disingenuous.

Im all for flags. Think they can look joyous and wonderful. Right now though the motivations of many suddenly putting one up or doing shit vandalism in an attempt to DIY it, aren’t wonderful and joyous at all.

Watch the bottom fall out of the property market wherever this is…

No one would buy a house on the same street as this wazzock.

These posts are all a bit Emily Thornberry (aka Lady Nugee and in my opinion, the worst, massively entitled, patronising, champagne socialist, closely followed by Angela Rayner).
It might make the Labour party sit up and take note that vast swathes of the population and not just the lower class white people that folk like you look down on, are very concerned about feeling like second class citizens in their own country but I very much doubt it.

HangryLikeTheHulk · 27/08/2025 13:31

The thing is, while this flag stuff might feel grassroots on the surface, it IS being orchestrated by some pretty opaque and shady organisations. Nothing wrong with flags per se, the issue is why this is happening and the motives behind it. Quite an illuminating bit of exposé here:

Angela Rayner??? Her childhood was on the breadline. Serious underclass background. You don’t actually know what a champagne socialist is do you?

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 27/08/2025 13:35

I have zero issue with anyone displaying the country’s flag in England. I have more issue with the terrorist supporters flying the flag of a country run by terrorists. Presumably they understand holding the Palestinian flag in the UK is because they support homophobia and terrorism.

There’s a group of often middle class women who seem to have lost all critical thinking skills

I rather live next to this than someone with a Palestinian flag (often some unthinking woke terrorist supporter)
