For those of you who think the flags and roundabout paintings are tacky...

What do you make of this house?

Fuck me that’s bloody awful. I can laugh though, as I don’t live near it. Poor neighbours..

Well there's also this

That’s so awful it’s actually brilliant … like they forgot how to spell the so called land of hope and glory and then thought “oh yea, that pesky last N” and squashed it in 😁

God I thought my neighbours were idiots …

myplace · 26/08/2025 12:50

The point with St George is that he’s by no means English. He predates the current map, and nationality was a bit different then anyway with Greeks and romans and so on.

ViolaPlains · 26/08/2025 12:56

Is that you, Emily Thornberry.

A guy on the street my mum lives on has spray painted a red cross on his house, he’s also done the same on peoples walls, fences and cars.

I like how door paint person didn’t realise England contains a second n, so had to squeeze one in.

Just proves the intelligence of the flag graffiti painters. He has no right to vandalise other people’s homes. I hope he gets fined and made to clean off his handiwork.

What would you call the board?

I’m thinking something like

Flag Talk
England Flag Appearances
National Symbolism Discussion

Flag wankers.

Epidote · 26/08/2025 13:15

A lot of effort but it is not going to last long. Paint weather quickly in a facade unless it is done in a particular way. If I cross that street I would think is a kid of hospital tbh. I wouldn't associate it with the English flag. I don't find it disturbing or anything I just don't like it much as a facade decoration. A flag would look better in my opinion.

Sgtmajormummy · 26/08/2025 13:16

Do you want an example of flag wielding with malicious intent?
Union Jacks during Marching Season in NI.

PInkyStarfish · 26/08/2025 12:26

Well done to everyone taking part.

Surely not? Or is this ironic.

Far right extremists co-opting the flag has transformed the meaning of the flag into something very dangerous and aggressive.

For those thinking- what’s wrong with the flag , shame on you for your simple mindedness.

What worries me is the flags handing from motorway bridges, what happens when they blow off and land on someone's windscreen, idiots

That's no different though to people who hang banners wishing someone a happy birthday with a photo of them. I've seen a few of those on motorway bridges.

LadyMary50 · 26/08/2025 13:30

TonTonMacoute · 26/08/2025 10:44

Well, let's think about who started all this flag crap.

Who decided we need a flag for LGB pride? Who decided we then needed a trans flag? Who decided we needed to fly the LGBTGI+ flag all down Oxford Street? Who painted zebra crossings and police cars rainbow colours, decided sportsmen had to wear rainbow laces, National Trust guides had to have rainbow lanyards? Who decided Palestinian flags should be flown everywhere?

Its been ramping up for years, why are we surprised that people finally react when they are told that they can fly any flag except their own?

Absolutely this👆

Dweetfidilove · 26/08/2025 13:36

Well, I just saw a post on social media showing British folks of all variety raising flags to (apparently) show that all are welcome to the UK. Sounds a brilliant idea to me.
Better than abandoning the flag to those other folks.
I may be inclined to hang one myself 🤔. That costly naturalisation certificate says I'm British after all 🤷🏾‍♀️.

ScruffMuffin · 26/08/2025 13:44

What's this flag business all about? Apologies if I appear to have been living under a rock... been dealing with family problems, and also don't have a TV. Is it to do with sport, or is it some kind of aggressive, collective xenophobia?

(Someone painted a red + on a local mini-roundabout when the Lionesses won in 2022, but it was swiftly removed.)

SmudgeButt · 26/08/2025 13:45

Our local social media was all of a twitter as the council had removed the flag bunting that had been tied along a bridge over a river. This is a roadway that is very narrow and hard to maneuver particularly if there's a lorry or bus - and it's a major commuter route. The flags were flapping into the traffic and yet people were up in arms about the "nasty PC snowflakes" that were obviously supporting the illegal immigrants living in the community. These are not necessarily working class people, just stupid ones.

Serpentstooth · 26/08/2025 13:47

TremendousBanana · 26/08/2025 03:03

I think there needs to be a separate board now called ‘Flag Talk’.

A separate bin, please.

Someone loudly and proudly identifying themselves as an ignorant yob there. At least they are letting others know.

Bet there’s a few XL Bully dogs behind that door. Arseholes.

TheodoraCrumpet · 26/08/2025 13:52

It's the faux innocence of 'get over it, nothing wrong with the English flag' that pisses me off. As if they were everywhere before certain parties started winding up the gullible with tales of enemy invaders. I live in one of the whitest, most British parts of the country, but the local FB pages would have you believe churches are being knocked down to build mosques, and there's going to be a migrant hotel on every corner.
Guy around the corner always flies a flag: fine. He has a flagpole, flag is correctly orientated, and it's his thing. It's not always even a British or English flag. He just likes flags. School near me has 3 flagpoles and flies the Union flag plus two other, according to what's current. Ukraine, England, sometimes, shock horror, even Pride. England flags during sporting events, generally men's football, being waved out of windows. Grand.
All of these things are within the range of cultural expectations. Because we're not, on the whole, devoted to the flag as a symbol of nationhood and identity. And using it as a symbol that's basically territory-marking isn't about pride. It's about hostility.

I mean I wouldn’t do it to my own house but I do admire the straightness of the lines 😂.

Yes I agree it’s very neatly done. I can’t abide messy paint jobs.

MayaPinion · 26/08/2025 13:58

Well I think it’s lovely that he’s supporting women’s rugby like that. In fact, it’s terrific that so many men have chosen to support it this year. It makes a lovely change from the women’s football there many men had a bitching hissy fit because their own team won 🙄

Well I am guessing that it’s been quite terrifying being Jewish and seeing all the Palestinian flags on the huge marches and everywhere else. And the trans flag has definitely been used as part of actions to intimidate sex realist women, because it’s been seen front and centre at marches where there have been placards with ‘decapitate TERFS’ and other incitement.

In a society with freedom of speech you can’t shut down somebody else’s opinion because it is scary to you when they may find your opinion equally scary. The normal way to sort these things out is by negotiation, which entails listening and talking. It’s the government’s job to do that but it doesn’t seem to fancy it.

We're supporting them in Cymru too.

Operation Raise the colours, led by bloody Tommy Robinson & his motley crew! 🙄

Some Faux-naif what’s with the flag posts along with a lot of racist bigotry just about sums up the Bank Holiday weekend on here!

Thank you!

I'm not info flags (in the way that a PP explained that her neighbour is - he just likes them!) but if I were going to display one, it would be a Union Jack. I'm British, not English. I'd probably display a selection of others too, as my close friends and immediate neighbours include Italian, Polish, Romanian and Indian families. And I'm in a small village in the south-west! I work in a school where it's not unusual to find ten nationalities/ languages in a single class. I find the aggressive obsession with Englishness/ anto-immigration completely bewildering and nonsensical.
