Paracetamol - is it a standard in your house?

I’ve just had my adult daughter here and I do not use paracetamol as it just isn’t my thing, I prefer ibuprofen.
What standard painkillers do the rest of you use and keep in your house?
I do keep baby paracetamol, but not adult doses.

I rarely take pain killers but would reach for paracetamol before ibuprofen. Always think the ibuprofen is harder on the stomach.

Same,we always have both in stock but I have read ibuprofen isn't great on the stomach especially for prolonged periods, so I usually got for paracetamol and if that doesn't help then ibuprofen is second choice.

I agree. Gives me stomach ache.

ThatWhiteElephant · 25/08/2025 14:09

We usually have both ibuprofen and paracetamol in the house as standard.

A guest, on Christmas Day, was most upset with me because my food was too rich (normal Christmas dinner) and we didn’t have any heartburn tablets in!

None of us have ever had heartburn, so have never had the need to buy tablets for it!

Cakeandusername · 25/08/2025 14:11

I have both in first aid kit. Personally prefer ibuprofen. Paracetamol are so cheap I’d keep them to hand.

Emmz1510 · 25/08/2025 14:14

I prefer paracetamol because ibuprofen doesn’t agrees with my stomach. I take cocodamol sometimes for terrible period pains.

ChopsyHatesFungus · 25/08/2025 14:16

Yes, I always have a fully stocked mini meds box in my bedroom and carry a small zipped purse with some emergency supplies in my handbag, wherever I go.

I suffer from sudden migraines and need to take a triptan asap, otherwise they can be difficult to shift.

Paracetamol. Ibuprofen, triptans, codeine, antacids, diarrhoea tablets, hayfever/allergy tablets, sting remedy, etc. in my meds box.

L0bstersLass · 25/08/2025 14:17

Paracetamol in this house. Rarely used.
I can't tolerate ibuprofen or aspirin so we don't have them.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 25/08/2025 14:20

I’d keep both in the house tend to use ibuprofen for the anti inflammatory effects. Paracetamol is 35p so it’s not going to break the bank to keep it in the cupboard just in case.

LoudPlumDog · 25/08/2025 14:20

Nurofen, usually.

I usually take ibuprofen as for years I wasn't convinced paracetamol actually did anything (probably because it was the only thing they would let me take for severe migraines when I was pregnant and it didn't even touch it) but I did take some the other day when ibuprofen hadn't helped and it seemed to work.
Usually we have ibuprofen, ibuprofen lysine (for period pain and DS migraines, paracetamol, paracetamol and caffeine, cold and flu, anadin extra (DH takes for migraines alongside his migraine meds) and I have naproxen for period pain. DH also had cocodamol. Obviously we don't take them altogether. I also have 4head and those cooling gel pads for headaches plus cooling pads you keep in the freezer for sprains or muscle pain
We also have a vast array of other medications such as antihistamines and diarrhea meds

Dontcallmescarface · 25/08/2025 14:21

Paracetamol...I'm not allowed ibruprofen due to my heart meds.

RedRiverShore5 · 25/08/2025 14:25

I don't take paracetamol as it makes me sick especially if I use it for headaches so use ibuprofen usually. We have both in the house though as DH uses both

zingally · 25/08/2025 14:32

Only tend to buy ibuprofen.

Grew up in a paracetamol only household, but when I took it for period pain as a teenager, it used to give me a funny sensation in my legs... Have since taken it as an adult, with no such issues, but I'm just in the habit of ibuprofen these days.

dizzydizzydizzy · 25/08/2025 14:41

I always have paracetamol and ibuprofen in stock at home and pop them in my suitcase for holidays. I very rarely need either.

Cappuccino5 · 25/08/2025 15:22

I’m a HCP so our house is well stocked at all times - the medication cupboard looks like a pharmacy🤣

We always have paracetamol & ibuprofen. I keep some in the car, my handbag etc so it’s there when we need it. I buy aspirin (when I remember to!) as it’s the gold standard OTC painkiller for headaches and can be used in an emergency for heart attacks and strokes. Always have anti-histamines, travel sickness tablets to help with nausea and gentle laxatives at home as well.

DD and I have both had multiple spinal surgeries in the past so there’s typically some co-codamol and stronger anti-inflammatories like naproxen & diclofenac lurking in the cupboards.

GainsvilleRockCity · 25/08/2025 15:35

I keep both in the house (Adults and kids versions.) For a headache and fever i tend to opt for paracetamol. For muscle pain or period pain, its ibuprofen.

Although, I'm now on much stronger pain medication for other reasons, so can't take either but I like to have the options for the rest of the family. We also have antihistamines, antacids, rehydration powders, immodium and buscopan in the medicine cabinet.

luckylavender · 25/08/2025 15:59

i have both but very wary of ibuprofen after my DF developed an ulcer which burst because of it

OhNoNotSusan · 25/08/2025 16:30

yes i think they can cause stomach ulcers as well as issues with joints

OhNoNotSusan · 25/08/2025 16:32

ibuprofen cause accelerate joint deterioration.

HazeyjaneIII · 25/08/2025 16:36

Dh uses ibuprofen, but I'm allergic to it, so can only use paracetamol.

I agree. I’ve always got both as there are no medals for sitting in pain. Always use paracetamol as first point of call as you say, ibuprofen is harsher on stomach

stravagante · 25/08/2025 16:40

Always have paracetamol and ibuprofen in the house. I remember once being at home at Mum's and having what later turned out to be an abscess under a tooth. She had no painkillers in and took a lovely leisurely time chatting to the pharmacist about what were the strongest ones she could buy while I stood with tears of utter pain rolling down my cheeks! 🤣🤣

I always have anti histamine, migraleve and plasters as well. I like to be stocked up for first aid issues (usually mine).

What a cheek, they should have brought their own!

bumblingbovine49 · 25/08/2025 16:41

Paracetamol here as ibuprofen upsets my stomach. It works for the things I need it.for generally. Maybe not.for very bad toothache but for bringing down my temperature when ill and for sinus and headache pain, they work fine
