Paracetamol - is it a standard in your house?

I’ve just had my adult daughter here and I do not use paracetamol as it just isn’t my thing, I prefer ibuprofen.
What standard painkillers do the rest of you use and keep in your house?
I do keep baby paracetamol, but not adult doses.

I rarely take pain killers but would reach for paracetamol before ibuprofen. Always think the ibuprofen is harder on the stomach.

same here ibuprofen kills my stomach. we have paracetamol or solpadine

XWKD · 24/08/2025 22:12

I use Nurofen+ or Solpadeine. I don't take them frequently. I have a chronic condition that flares up occasionally and they work well.

LoudlyProudlyHorrid · 24/08/2025 22:14

Ibuprofen though I prefer kids nurofen. It works more quickly, being liquid and I can get away with a small dose (equivalent to half a tablet usually)

WimbyAce · 24/08/2025 22:17

Normally have both but always Paracetamol. And always have some in for the kids too.

Charlieangle · 24/08/2025 22:17

Paracetamol every time.
If I was on a desert island, paracetamol would be my luxury item.
From a medical background, ibuprofen should be banned.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 24/08/2025 22:17

We have both in the house, and I always carry a pack of each in a pouch with various other bits and bobs in my bag. I teach undergraduates and am forever being asked for painkillers in hot lecture rooms.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 24/08/2025 22:17

Paracetamol - and I do take it quite frequently as I always seem to have something aching, but I only ever use ibuprofen if I have bad toothache and need to alternate doses. I understand it’s meant to be anti-inflammatory but I don’t find it particularly effective as a painkiller.

Quite a few people are not able to use ibuprofen either due to their own medical history or because of other medication they take.

BarryShitpeasInaPod · 24/08/2025 22:24

We have paracetamol aspirin co-codamol, ibuprofen and prescribed oramorph, tramadol, naproxen, co-codamol, morphine slow release tablets and patches. (Not all taken at the same time or by the same person!)

CheeseWisely · 24/08/2025 22:27

We have both paracetamol and ibuprofen and both in baby versions for DS. Ibuprofen for aches and teething, paracetamol for headaches or period pain.

seasid · 24/08/2025 22:28

I thought it was standard for all households to have a medicine cabinet that includes minimum of:

  • paracetamol
  • plasters
  • some kind of sudocrem or savelon
  • thermometer
  • ibroprofen

I’m chronically ill and have been my entire life so mine is full to the brim but at the very least everyone I know either carries paracetamol in their bag or has it in their car or medicine cabinet. It’s 30 something p, it’s not hard to pick a pack up

2025mustbebetter · 24/08/2025 22:28

Paracetamol is my go to but I've started buying ibuprofen more frequently as my daughter has a repetitive inflammatory injury from netball. I don't take it now and nor does DH as we're both on medication that prevents it.

My other DDs take liquid paracetamol (even though one is 18!)

Shinyandnew1 · 24/08/2025 22:30

We have both. Tend to use ibuprofen for pain-muscular/joint/headache/period pain/toothache etc and paracetamol for unwellness-fever/coldy/general malaise!

Why do you have baby paracetamol specifically?

When mine were little, we had Medised, now that was magic stuff!

seasid · 24/08/2025 22:30

BarryShitpeasInaPod · 24/08/2025 22:24

We have paracetamol aspirin co-codamol, ibuprofen and prescribed oramorph, tramadol, naproxen, co-codamol, morphine slow release tablets and patches. (Not all taken at the same time or by the same person!)

Bupremorphine patches? How is the person who uses them finding them? I have them and they work great for a few months but then completely stops working until my dose is increased again.

Seawolves · 24/08/2025 22:31

My little one is permanently on 6 hourly paracetamol so I always have a couple of bottles in. I use ibuprofen for breakthrough fevers so have that in too. Have the tablet form of both in too.

Travelfairy · 24/08/2025 22:31

Ibuprofen is harsh on tummy. I would take paracetamol as first line meds. I think every home should have paracetamol as standard as you would have have things like plasters, rennie etc every household should have a few basics imo.

BotterMon · 24/08/2025 22:37

Can't take Ibuprofen due to other medication interaction so paracetamol only here.

Summerbay23 · 24/08/2025 22:38

Always have paracetamol and ibuprofen. Paracetamol for headaches, colds, general pain. Ibuprofen (preferably after a meal) for muscular pain or inflammation. But sometimes we might take both if someone is very poorly (my bad back) or tonsillitis or something.

MagneticSquirrel · 24/08/2025 22:38

Paracetamol - at least a weeks worth in case of nasty sore throats / cold / flu / Covid. Ibuprofen for period cramps and any injuries.

Always have painkillers in my handbag and car in case of headache or unexpected pain while out though!

IfYoureLeavingTakeMeToo · 24/08/2025 22:40

realslimshade · 24/08/2025 21:34

I have a whole pharmacy. Paracetamol, ibuprofen, naproxen, dihydrocodeine… take your pick!

Me too

I get paracetamol on prescription as they have shown that other drugs (nsaids etc) work better with paracetamol.

louderthan · 24/08/2025 22:44

I find ibuprofen better for period pain. I often take it on an empty stomach as I feel so nauseous first thing in the morning when I have my period that I can’t face eating anything til the pain has subsided.

SkeletonBatsflyatnight · 24/08/2025 22:45

We have both paracetamol and ibuprofen plus lemsips, cold & flu pills and calpol melts. I keep them as standard in the household first aid kit and the ones in the car.

brunettemic · 24/08/2025 22:49

Paracetamol and ibuprofen are for different things, it’s wise to have both.

BeautifulDayFor · 24/08/2025 22:51

Ibuprofen, paracetamol and cocodomol in varying strengths.
Ibuprofen for most pains, paracetamol for feverish aches and pains (like flu). Cocodomol I've only ever taken for toothache when desperate.

Smartiepants79 · 24/08/2025 22:52

I always have basic medication in my house. Paracetamol, ibuprofen and even some co-codamol. Along with cold medicine, Imodium, antihistamines etc I like to be prepared.

BloodandGlitter · 24/08/2025 22:53

Please please for those who favour ibuprofen, consider the long term risks

As Someone who is due their second kidney transplant soon, my kidney doctor calls ibuprofen the devils drug

its ok in small doses but can cause stomach and kidney issues and if you have untreated high blood pressure or something you are unaware of, it can kill your kidneys (take it from me!!)

Paracetamol is generally considered safer and although can affect the liver, I don’t think there are any proven side effects from using it frequently the same way there is with ibuprofen

My MILs liver is dying and her Doctor has linked it to her previous addiction to Solphadeine. She never exceeded the daily limit but took it continuously for years and is unfortunately experiencing the side effects of it.
