Paracetamol - is it a standard in your house?

I’ve just had my adult daughter here and I do not use paracetamol as it just isn’t my thing, I prefer ibuprofen.
What standard painkillers do the rest of you use and keep in your house?
I do keep baby paracetamol, but not adult doses.

Ibuprofen, paracetamol, aspirin, cocodamol, then all manner of stuff for all ailments. Particular favourite is Vicks.

Fifthtimelucky · 24/08/2025 21:50

I have paracetamol in the house, but very rarely have one.

The OP has reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend many years ago when we were teenagers. She was at my house and asked if she could have an aspirin because she had a headache. She couldn’t believe it when I told her we didn’t have any (or any other painkillers for that matter).

Why do they alternate between them in hospital then when children have temperatures and / or pain?

You can shorten the time taken in between if you mix both. So paracetamol and then 2 hours later take ibruprufen then in 2 hours time you take another paracetamol etc. It means you've got a constant top up of something without waiting the 4 or 6 hours to take the one drug.

WearyAuldWumman · 24/08/2025 21:51

I have both paracetamol and ibuprofen. I prefer the latter, since it works better on my aches and pains. However, I'm aware of the problems associated with it.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 24/08/2025 21:51

I do have paracetamol, but tend to buy (and use) ibuprofen much more frequently. My family members always have painkillers in the house too, mainly because most of us suffer with migraines!

MargaretThursday · 24/08/2025 21:52

I normally use ibroprofen first because I find it more effective for headaches, period pain and back pain, which are the main things I use it for.
If that's not touching it I normally go for Co-codermol as that means I'm going into a migraine and I need something stronger.

TheWytch · 24/08/2025 21:55

I don't generally take painkillers so no.

There might be an expired pack in the bottom of an old handbag though

Devilsmommy · 24/08/2025 21:57

Italianasoitis · 24/08/2025 21:47

Yes, I've looked it up and ibuprofen is a painkiller that also reduces fever.

Thank god for that. Thought I was losing it as I was sure I was told give my toddler nurofen for a fever😅

Whatshesaid96 · 24/08/2025 21:58

Until recently I didn't use much paracetamol or ibruprufen and would often have to check expiry dates. I have a lovely supply of dihydrocodiene I think it's called in the house. Lovingly prescribed for me when I had kidney stones. Haven't used any but I know it's there in the bathroom cabinet should the twatting painful thing come back
I do also keep a supply of antihistamine for both adults and kids and calpol/Nurofen for kids plus a spare bottle as it gets burned through quickly when one of them gets ill. I do also appear to have several first aid kits around the house that I top up regularly.

Weirdly though the oldest kid always gets quite a high temperature with a cold. With her paracetamol has never got her temperature down whereas the Nurofen does. Youngest child rarely gets a temperature, he's the germ superseeder though. He quietly just brings it without a fuss and then brings the household down with his plague.

Aldilidl · 24/08/2025 21:58

What’s the significance of your adult daughter being there? If you have an adult daughter why would you keep baby paracetamol?

I have all sorts of painkillers in, but of the “standard” ones I’d always have ibuprofen and paracetamol.

NecklessMumster · 24/08/2025 21:59

Paracetamol and ibuprofen, I grab whichever is to hand and alternate them 2 hourly, I thought this was the advice for ongoing pain relief

Theunamedcat · 24/08/2025 22:01

Ibuprofen for me paracetamol for ds (he has acid reflux) cocodamol liquid paracetamol for ds2 gel Ibuprofen for ds1 cant take it orally but he has been cleared for the gel four different types of antihistamine and many many more

IsANameImportant · 24/08/2025 22:01

We have

paracetamol
ibuprofen
co-codamol
aspirin
buscopan
ice packs
4head rub stick
windeze
gaviscon
heat packs
ibuleve gel

If anyone has any pain and needs some pain relief, it can take a while to select the most appropriate drug! I wouldn’t use the aspirin for normal pain though, that is for suspected heart attacks. I’m prepared for anything here.

ThatsRoughBuddy · 24/08/2025 22:02

I’m not meant to take ibuprofen but I do because it actually helps. Sometimes more than the dihydrocodeine I use. Always have paracetamol in the house too.

Its rare for anyone else in this house to need a painkiller but I’m prepared if need be!

WickedElpheba · 24/08/2025 22:03

I use paracetamol more and DH prefers ibuprofen so I buy both but I wouldn't buy something we don't use.

Borborygmus · 24/08/2025 22:03

We probably have some paracetamol somewhere, but it's used so infrequently that it has almost certainly passed it's expiry date.

PuppyMonkey · 24/08/2025 22:04

We prefer ibuprofen for most stuff like headaches and period pain but paracetamol is better when you have the flu.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 24/08/2025 22:04

I have a choice of paracetamol, ibuprofen, prescription strength codine, tramadol, naproxen and oramorph. Though I actually rarely take anything.

Echlefecker · 24/08/2025 22:07

We have both..I love the feeling when the paracetamol kicks in and stops a headache, nice and dozy!.. Ibuprofen doesn't work on headaches for me but it's good for.muscular.aches, I find it slightly takes the edge of cystitis too, whereas paracetamol does nothing for me for that. . Just about to go on hols and I will have both of them packed and some imodium

Mama2many73 · 24/08/2025 22:07

We used to prefer ibuprofen, but always had both in as uou can take both if the pain is really bad. I found paracetamol didn't work great on its own.
Now can't take ibuprofen due to other meds, and find paracetamol works really well when needed.

Denim4ever · 24/08/2025 22:09

I'm not one to take either very often. My only stipulation is that it must be in manageable form. So no round pills or undercoated tablets. I buy Neurophen caplets and Anadin Extra or Anadin paracetamol

CoastalCalm · 24/08/2025 22:09

Can’t use ibuprofen but there’s probably some somewhere that husband had , it’s paracetemol and codeine I have - very rarely take the former and often take the latter but not for pain

LividSquidward · 24/08/2025 22:11

I would go through 1-2 boxes of both a month for period pain, alternating them so I wasn't more than two hours between doses.

Often the pain would wake me up in the night as it'd been too long (and I was maxed for the day).

Since I went on the mini pill to stop my periods, I've not had to use any painkillers (except the time I had covid, to be fair).

I keep finding half finished packets in bags and cupboards because I was so used to having them everywhere.

Ijustwanttobehealthy · 24/08/2025 22:12

No, we don't keep any painkillers at all in the house.

FrodoBiggins · 24/08/2025 22:12

Same here!

Asprin at home and in my purse and coat pockets every day too. Was with an elderly colleague who had a heart attack and gave him an asprin out of my bag before the ambulance arrived - I had them in there for that very reason. Always good to have on you!
