Paracetamol - is it a standard in your house?

I’ve just had my adult daughter here and I do not use paracetamol as it just isn’t my thing, I prefer ibuprofen.
What standard painkillers do the rest of you use and keep in your house?
I do keep baby paracetamol, but not adult doses.

Paracetamol and ibuprofen. I keep the paracetamol because I find it very good for bringing my temperature down if I’m feverish.

Prefer Disprin,

In addition to my prescriptions I generally keep a small laundry list of over the counter medications just in case for cold and flu, tummy wobbles, allergies etc. I take naproxen routinely so can't have ibuprofen so don't have any in the house but keep stocked on paracetamol.

NotMyRealAccount · 24/08/2025 23:05

We normally have plenty of paracetamol and a couple of packets of 200mg ibuprofen tablets. I used to prefer aspirin, but it doesn't take much to give me tinnitus as a side effect and I avoid taking it now.

BourgeoisBabe · 24/08/2025 23:08

Always have it but very seldom use it.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/08/2025 23:11

Anadin extra and ibuprofen.

OchreSwan · 24/08/2025 23:17

The only time I ever really use painkillers is for my period pain, and I tend to find ibuprofen is more effective for that, so I have more of that in. Sometimes I’ll rotate through ibuprofen and paracetamol to manage the pain if it’s a particularly bad period, and I would typically reach for paracetamol for a headache but that’s quite rare.

TimeForAFreshStart · 24/08/2025 23:18

Both - paracetamol for headaches, cold symptoms, temperatures and similar, ibuprofen for anything inflammatory/aches/cramps/sprains etc.

Ibuprofen is not great for the stomach.

I was an ibuprofen for everything person before I started working in a first aid role. Now I use it a lot less.

GreatTheCat · 24/08/2025 23:23

I get daily headaches but rarely take painkillers. I do have paracetamol in the house though. I can't take ibuprofen.

gandeysflipflop · 24/08/2025 23:23

Hoppinggreen · 24/08/2025 21:32

Paracetamol does nothing for me nor DS and DH refuses to take any painkillers so I don't buy it, only Ibruprofen

yes I find paracetamol doesn't work for me either no idea why. I always have it in for the dc though. I find ibuprofen works better for me. but if im in a lot of pain I take
co-codamol, always have a box of them in for emergencies.

Sub2Mumma · 24/08/2025 23:25

Paracetamol is standard here - I can’t take brufen anymore unfortunately and DH can’t either due to his asthma, sure there is a random packet thoug! We always have a stock of infant paracetamol and brufen in just in case

BreakingBroken · 24/08/2025 23:31

well i buy from costco; tylenol extra strength arthritis, ibuprophen, melatonin, mira-lax, nyquil, saline eye gtts, cough drops and aloe vera gel. i'm all out of polysporin.
a good selection of bandages a well

my go to for discomfort is two tylenol es mainly for headache and sleeplessness (which i often find it due to a headache).

Carsontheroad · 24/08/2025 23:32

I have both in the house but ibuprofen is my preference. But if I'm really ill I take both!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/08/2025 23:33

Paracetamol is the go-to in my house, particularly for straight-forward pain.

Ibuprofen is for either an inflammation or if paracetamol on its own really hasn’t worked. I’m not a fan of ibuprofen though as it’s so harsh on the stomach, and dd16 is asthmatic, so it’s not brilliant for her either.

Midnightlove · 24/08/2025 23:40

Paracetamol before ibuprofen.. but for headaches anadin extra is my go to.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 24/08/2025 23:41

Anadin Extra which contains aspirin, paracetamol and caffeine.

TrixieFatell · 24/08/2025 23:44

We have paracetamol, ibuprofen and cocodamol (8/500) as standard. I get horrible headaches at times so I take both paracetamol and ibuprofen to sort it out.

Sometimes we might even have some naproxen curtosey of my husband's back.

Enko · 24/08/2025 23:46

I do t use either a lot but I always have paracetamol and ibuprofen in the house.

Also have plasters, blister plasters, anti acid of some sort and savlon as dh has some weird from child obsession with savlon. & needs it around. Used to always have cystitis satchets too but that has stopped on the last few years.

To me they are just normal first aid stuff.

Amillionpebbles · 24/08/2025 23:48

Prior to long covid, would just have some paracetamol and ibuprofen in - adults and kids versions. Now there’s lots of stuff.

My boyfriend is American and we are over there a bit.. I keep tubs of Excedrin everywhere. You can get 300 at a time!

realslimshade · 24/08/2025 21:34

I have a whole pharmacy. Paracetamol, ibuprofen, naproxen, dihydrocodeine… take your pick!

Same here! Chronic illness will do that to you, I could stock a pharmacy!

TruckDiver · 25/08/2025 00:49

None here, as I find it completely useless for any kind of pain. Never understand why people take it, TBH.

I mostly take it for side effects from a medication - it gives me a really high temperature and it helps for that

amillionandone · 25/08/2025 02:44

We keep both. One of us sometimes prefers one type and the other isn't supposed to use that one. Besides, I like having options and alternating.

Noshadelamp · 25/08/2025 02:50

We have both, they are not interchangeable as they do different things.
