Paracetamol - is it a standard in your house?

I’ve just had my adult daughter here and I do not use paracetamol as it just isn’t my thing, I prefer ibuprofen.
What standard painkillers do the rest of you use and keep in your house?
I do keep baby paracetamol, but not adult doses.

I can’t take NSAIDs, as although I don’t have asthma, I find it difficult to breathe on them.

We have:

paracetamol
codeine (left over as we have both been prescribed it, but refused to take any more, after experiencing the constipation. Plus we are both worried about addiction.)
cold remedies (not on top of paracetamol)
soluble aspirin for DH, cardiovascular disease
prescription drugs

I take paracetamol if I have a headache; and it goes. Post menopausal, so no pain in that department anymore. DH doesn’t believe in taking drugs, so he won’t take paracetamol; but he now has to take stuff for his familial high cholesterol and heart problems!

@Libellousness ibuprofen reduces blood loss with a period so better than paracetamol in that respect.

I have the works but we use ibuprofen, paracetamol and antihistamines regularly. We try not to run out of decongestants as well, but use much less so check when someone starts a cold.

Where did you get that information from? Post surgery I've been told to avoid ibuprofen as it increases bleeding.

Bleeding from an open wound or injury is different from period bleeding.

I'm prescribed naproxen (basically very strong ibuprofen) to help manage my periods and reduce bleeding as well as pain. It's been an absolute game-changer for me.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 25/08/2025 12:52

Paracetamol and ibuprofen are both standard.

Some people are allergic to NSAIDS, if you have both you can alternate to manage very painful or bad illness, NSAIDS can inflame stomachs and finally, it's the safest option for some viruses like chicken pox (although arguably, that is covered by your child paracetamol).

Imbusytodaysorry · 25/08/2025 12:53

Paracetamol . Ibroufen isn’t good for you so I’d only use that if needed too rather than choose over paracetamol.

Ivy888 · 25/08/2025 12:53

not sure what YABU would mean, yabu to not have paracetamol for visitors? Yabu to only have ibuprofen? Yabu to use ibuprofen instead of paracetamol?
Yes, I always have painkillers at home.
No, I don’t use ibuprofen because of its dangers to the stomach (and paracetamol works fine for me).
surely you just have whichever medicines you know you use? It doesn’t matter what the rest of the world uses.

Navigatinglife100 · 25/08/2025 12:54

We generally use paracetamol.

My elderly father can't take ibuprofen (kidney issues) and my husband avoids it due to it being harsher on the stomach. But we have a pack as it's sometimes useful (not for Dad, obviously)

RaraRachael · 25/08/2025 12:56

I have paracetamol in the house as ibuprofen upsets my stomach but I never find it makes any difference to pain.
I remember coming round from a major operation and being asked if I wanted pain relief - I was given paracetamol so I might as well not bothered.

ObtuseMoose · 25/08/2025 12:58

The only thing I have in is Disprin, my mum was addicted to painkillers so I'm very wary of them.

TequilaNights · 25/08/2025 13:00

We have paracetamol, ibuprofen, 2 types of antihistamine and cocodamol in our house as standard - and keep a few boxes in.

Maddy70 · 25/08/2025 13:01

Ibuprofen can really do damage to your stomach if used too frequently. I use paracetamol mostly

Shewhoshallnotbenamed91 · 25/08/2025 13:03

There are big complications for taking ibroprofen long term. A family member had a heart attack which was caused by this

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/08/2025 13:06

Libellousness · 24/08/2025 21:31

In our house, it’s Ibuprofen for inflammatory pain (knocks/sprains etc), Paracetamol for period pain/headaches.

Same here, plus calpol for my teen who can't take tablets.

Member984815 · 25/08/2025 13:08

Ibuprofen, paracetamol, uniflu I keep a small amount of solpadeine not sure I spelled that right. Always have immodium and motillium and some lemsips.

KellySeveride · 25/08/2025 13:10

Paracetamol is my go to but we do have ibuprofen in the house too due to joint pain.

I also have co-codomol, dihydrocodiene and oxycodone (yes really!) due to major leg surgery last year. I joke about the oxy having street value but it stays in my little medicine box out of the way because I’m aware of its strength.

elliejjtiny · 25/08/2025 13:13

I always have paracetamol, ibuprofen and cold medication in, plus calpol and children's Nurofen for the dc.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 25/08/2025 13:21

Like condoms, i suppose, I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Paracetamol and ibuprofen in our house. Why would you NOT?

TubeScreamer · 25/08/2025 13:22

I always have a stash of paracetamol. I think someone uses it every day here.

never have ibuprofen as it upsets my stomach.

RememberBeKindWithKaren · 25/08/2025 13:25

Yes always keep paracetamol and ibuprofen in and antihistamines and liquid ibuprofen/ voltarol. Mum was a nurse and the medicines box was always kept topped up

SeedyM · 25/08/2025 13:28

They work differently depending on what the problem is so we have both in the house and use them v sparingly. Find ibuprofen to be better for period pain and has a more marked effect on a high temperature and paracetamol works better for me with headaches and earaches.

MB34 · 25/08/2025 13:29

I keep both (and a lot of others).
They treat different types of pain so both are useful.
However (racks my brain from my time many moons ago as a Pharmacy Technician) Ibuprofen shouldn't be taken by people with stomach problems, asthma or allergic to aspirin.

Hayley1256 · 25/08/2025 13:31

Rarely take them but always have in:
Paracetamol
Ibuprofen
Nuromol
Allergy tablets
Gaviscon
Sudafed
Calpol
Cough medicine
Sudacream

BauhausOfEliott · 25/08/2025 13:31

I usually have paracetamol and ibuprofen but I think it’s perfectly normal and reasonable to keep one or the other. They serve much the same purpose.

Livpool · 25/08/2025 13:32

I can’t take NSAiDs due my asthma but always have paracetamol and Ibuprofen (for DH) in. I have 30mg codeine that I am prescribed for a knee is bit don’t give them to anyone

isthismylifenow · 25/08/2025 13:39

We have paracetamol in always as my ddog has been prescribed it to help with his arthritis.

Very rarely ibuprofen as we can get way better options over the counter here, like codeine, paracetamol and ibuprofen mix in one capsule. So for something more serious than paracetamol can deal with, this does the job well.

IV paracetamol is quite potent stuff, and some people do underestimate just how well it works. My dd recovered from a tonsillectomy which unfortunately went to secondary infection on paracetamol only.
