I nearly threw up when I saw it this morning - what a horrible shock.

It's a very small town in the Midlands near a city. Yes it's ex-mining but does reasonable ok now, not deprived eg no contextual offers for my dc for uni, but not massively desirable or trendy. Has a Labour MP now but hasn't always in recent years. Voted for Brexit but only just. In 2019 more people voted against Tories AND Brexit than for them - split the vote so we still got a Tory, but still.

In other words, I did not expect this. It's horrible - looks ugly and badly done even before you get started on the thinking behind it. AIBU to ring the council on Tuesday and ask when they are going to deal with this vandalism?

I did a four hour round-trip on the motorway today too and the amount of flags on bridges was shocking - just make it stop.

But I do totally get your viewpoint OP - it’s not OTT to feel sick about overt and abhorrent hatred in your own area. I was always proud to be from Yorkshire until the Rotherham hotel - then I was ashamed. I drove up a street yesterday full of half mast flags and found it very disturbing tbh and wouldn’t wish to be walking up it - strangely just one spot full of them and none in the next village. My council didn’t have local elections this year, but my previous county is Reform run now and I am so glad I don’t live there, though family does. If my council turns Reform I will want to leave, and have looked at different areas. Some may feel that’s OTT too.
It’s not about refusing to accept immigration is an issue for people. It’s about the hatred against immigrants and ignorance demonstrated about immigration. It’s about refusing to see there could ever , ever be a reason to be hateful and violent to a specific set of humans.
The English and U.K. flags are now used deliberately by those wanting to attack and displace others - we all know what it means painted on a roundabout - but used so they can say they’re just being patriotic. St George will be turning in his Palestinian (now Israeli) grave I expect.

This is why we need the laugh emoji back!

I mean I find the vandalism distasteful and think it's likely to be based in something not as innocent as patriotism, but being so dramatic about it is just feeding the beast really.

You cant walk down any high street in Scotland without seeing the st Andrews cross all the public buildings have them and nobody bats an eyelid at it. I just don't understand what they problem is with the English flying their flag

I am so sick of this type of thinking. There is nothing wrong with putting a st George's flag anywhere, it is England's flag.

Go worry about a real issue like tax evasion lazy people and illegal immigrants feeling entitled to benefits and the erosion of our culture to accommodate other cultures, especially the stupidity of thinking flying our flag is somehow racist or causing anyone offence. Patriotism is growing (thank God). It's about time we found the French in us and focussed on protecting our borders from the invasion of single men of fighting age!

Fucking hell, I've never read so many disingenuous replies. Everyone knows full well, much of the current flag dawbing is nothing to do with actual patriotism.

If people are being patriotic, why weren’t the flags flown for the Lionesses?
