I nearly threw up when I saw it this morning - what a horrible shock.

It's a very small town in the Midlands near a city. Yes it's ex-mining but does reasonable ok now, not deprived eg no contextual offers for my dc for uni, but not massively desirable or trendy. Has a Labour MP now but hasn't always in recent years. Voted for Brexit but only just. In 2019 more people voted against Tories AND Brexit than for them - split the vote so we still got a Tory, but still.

In other words, I did not expect this. It's horrible - looks ugly and badly done even before you get started on the thinking behind it. AIBU to ring the council on Tuesday and ask when they are going to deal with this vandalism?

I did a four hour round-trip on the motorway today too and the amount of flags on bridges was shocking - just make it stop.

Well yes, at least some people involved in organising this are setting a trap for Progressive types - which Progressive types seem determined to walk right into, judging by this thread.

PruthePrune · 24/08/2025 22:25

Sounds like you don't cope with life very well. I hope you are getting the appropriate help.

Anyahyacinth · 24/08/2025 22:25

Someone in Leeds painted Just F**k Off over one of the crusade cross roundabouts 🤣🫶

whynotwhatknot · 24/08/2025 22:26

The flag shouldn’t be a contentious issue. It is the English flag.

The fact that it has become such issue, demonstrates how serious the issue is, and how repressed the British people are, if we can’t be proud of our flag and country.

Surely any British person knows that being socially repressed (hence the general aversion to stuff like flag waving and looking silly and awkward when we do so) is a huge part of the culture here. Are you not proud of our shared cultural heritage?

What cultural heritage? You can’t be British….

Dappy777 · 24/08/2025 22:27

😆You nearly threw up because someone had painted an England flag in England?! I hope you recover from the ghastly trauma OP. Do you still feel sick or has your stomach settled down a bit now? Still, there was some compensation, wasn’t there. At least you got to post on here and feel all cool and liberal and ‘progressive’. You should copy and paste your post to the comments section on the Guardian website. They will love you.

I don’t know why Putin doesn’t launch an attack on this island. I mean it. We have reached such depths of insanity and self-loathing that no one would resist him. I certainly wouldn’t bother.

You nearly threw up because someone painted a flag.

You should maybe seek some kind of mental health help because that’s not a normal reaction at all.

Also pretty much every other country displays and flys their flag with pride but the second it’s England we best fetch the smelling salts and clutch our pearls.

100% this. Get a grip @Liesmorelies 😂

A LOT of posters on here this week are very scared that 'the left' are weakening and are much less in the UK now, and more people are going more right leaning... I have never seen so many threads before in such a short space of time - that are similar to this. 'OH NOOOOO, non left wing people in my town, FLYING THE ENGLAND FLAG, SUPPORTING REFORM, and NOT THINKING LIKE ME!'😱

Pass the smelling salts.

You can see the steam coming out of their nose from here! 😆

Bathingforest · 24/08/2025 22:28

It's probably very pretty sight. It's St George's cross. Aren't you English

This totally nails it.

Let's hope she never goes to the Sistine chapel ...

You “nearly threw up” when you saw an English flag? Seriously…are you demented?

kiddywinkleyeee · 24/08/2025 22:29

I personally think the ‘flag’ protests are a hint about a bigger protest…I might be wrong though.
The English have never been patriotic apart from international sports / celebratory so I can only guess that this is more of a protest 🤷‍♀️
I was walking in Maida Vale yesterday and even zebra crossings had been painted!

Bit of an extreme reaction OP lol, it’s only a cross.

LizzieSiddal · 24/08/2025 21:34

There’s nothing wrong with the English flag when it’s there to celebrate. The low life vandalising public areas are doing it to intimidate people who aren’t white. Anyone saying anything different are either stupidly naive or just plain stupid.

Exactly this

Ah, right. So how do we avoid this trap then? Go along with the flag-shagging? Pretend not to notice it? If we say nothing will it stop, along with the horrible attitudes that are behind it? I'm tired of all this now, really. I want to go back to how we were.

Are you being serious?

ClaireEclair · 24/08/2025 22:31

I’m from Scotland. We don’t think twice about raising our flags. My Mum’s neighbour has the Scottish flag and lion rampant flying all the time in their garden. I don’t get the issue in England.

Talk about me being over-dramatic - people are upset about racism so you want us all to become Russian? ok.

20 years ago I was told by head office to take down the English flags for the football as not to offend no whites

Happyher · 24/08/2025 21:37

St George was Turkish

St George was mythical and based on the older myth of Perseus and Andromeda.

LightOnTheGrey · 24/08/2025 22:33

Liesmorelies · 24/08/2025 21:31

@BettyBobble It's not a 'nod to St George,' though is it? It's an aggressive act rooted in xenophobia. Like cats marking their territory these people are swishing the paint around and it needs to stop.

It upsets me as well op. I was away first half of August and since I'm back they seem to be everywhere. As someone who is not white I find it very worrying and I am scared for my kids' future here.

People can pretend all they like that it's a nod to st george and the same as flying any other flag. It's not. It's a clear message to say that this country belongs to the (white) English.

Greenwitchart · 24/08/2025 22:33

The current flag shagging has nothing to do with genuine patriotism unfortunately.

It is about thick, hate-fulled far right agitators using it as a way to create a hostile atmosphere for immigrants/non whites.

Nothing to be proud of and we as council tax payers will end up funding the cleaning up of roundabouts and removal of flags from random places.

😂 It's batshit isn't it? Are these people for real? I don't know a SOUL in real life who reacts like this. The parallel world of Mumsnet strikes again.

If this is real, I am so embarrassed for the OP! 😬
