To be devasted the roundabout in my town has a crappy 'flag' painted on?

I nearly threw up when I saw it this morning - what a horrible shock.

It's a very small town in the Midlands near a city. Yes it's ex-mining but does reasonable ok now, not deprived eg no contextual offers for my dc for uni, but not massively desirable or trendy. Has a Labour MP now but hasn't always in recent years. Voted for Brexit but only just. In 2019 more people voted against Tories AND Brexit than for them - split the vote so we still got a Tory, but still.

In other words, I did not expect this. It's horrible - looks ugly and badly done even before you get started on the thinking behind it. AIBU to ring the council on Tuesday and ask when they are going to deal with this vandalism?

I did a four hour round-trip on the motorway today too and the amount of flags on bridges was shocking - just make it stop.

Many people feel the same way about the Trans flag of oppression. If people can wave trans flags everywhere why can’t people wave their country’s flag.

Guess what? Those who are trans often fly their trans flag at all times, not just when the racists tell them it is time to.

Why do these people need to be told when to fly the flag? Can they not engage their own brain cell?

Where has 10 million come from? Net migration has never been 1 million a year! Pre Brexit it was around 200k to 300k and peaked higher than that in 2022 and 2023 but has since started coming down again.

While we have net immigration we also have falling birth rates.

There is a conversation to be had about levels of immigration but that needs to be an honest conversation.

Edited

Apologies, I was using gross immigration figures. 5-6 million, so not quite a London size city but still an outrageous burden on the UK.

It’s terrifying how many posters on here have NO grasp of the parallels.

They see it as a bit of harmless pride and patriotism. “It’s just a flag”.

All the while oblivious to the hatred and racism behind this campaign and how historically this has played out.

Agree, exactly. Scary really how oblivious (or not oblivious but just don't care) a lot are

No, no, this is different, honest! Those people were bad and weird, not like us. We’ve got good reason, we’re the good guys

yeah, pull the other one. You don’t wake up one day in a fascist state, there is a build up. This is the build up

Indeed, as Michael Rosen puts it:
I sometimes fear that people think that fascism arrives in fancy dress worn by grotesques and monsters as played out in endless re-runs of the Nazis.Fascism arrives as your friend. It will restore your honour, make you feel proud, protect your house, give you a job, clean up the neighbourhood, remind you of how great you once were, clear out the venal and the corrupt, remove anything you feel is unlike you…It doesn’t walk in saying,“Our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution.”

Well they've got to share that brain cell so it's not as fully tiunctional as most.

Well, I wouldn't fancy trying to paint the Ddraig Goch! 😉

When you wish you could join in with painting flags on roundabouts but you're Welsh 😭

But on the other hand fascism can arrive in fancy dress of another kind, one that cannot be pointed to for fear we're being "racist." Radical Islam (which, I must stress, is obviously very different from "Muslim") is recognised as the greatest security threat to the UK and across Europe, and I think some of the men demonstrating are probably scared that unless they protest now they might find themselves forced to engage in a more bloody battle one day. That sounds very dramatic, but it may well be how they're beginning to feel.

Yes, that would be my best effort too!

DoNotIron · 25/08/2025 10:05

I’ve seen the quips about not lasting long in NI etc. The flag situation here is nothing to be proud of and is no laughing matter. People marking territory and making entire towns and villages a cold house for anyone who ‘ain’t from around these parts.’ Anyone who claims that it’s just a flag is naive. It can speak a thousand words, for good or bad. Context is everything.

ByShyRaven · 25/08/2025 10:05

As a white individual married to a person of colour, I can attest that my wife feels uneasy visiting places where St. George’s crosses are prominently displayed. Whether we like it or not, the far right has co-opted the flag.

OldBeyondMyYears · 25/08/2025 10:08

The two mini roundabouts in my sleepy rural village were painted over this weekend. The village FB page went mental…but nobody threw up as far as I’m aware 😬

Bit of an overreaction OP…do you need a bucket?🪣

YesterdaysFuture · 25/08/2025 10:10

This is a moral panic, spread by councils who have held emergency meetings over these flags.

Because the authorities are panicking over this more people are doing this.

This government is so pathetic at reading public mood (something Blair was excellent at) they're escalating the problem.

Tell someone not to do it and they're do it more.

So glad I don't live in one of these chav towns. After Brexit you'd have thought 'that'll learn 'em' - but no they'll still all be voting for Farage. Can't argue with stupid.

Edited

What's a chav town?

Hoardasurass · 25/08/2025 10:12

Maray1967 · 25/08/2025 09:48

Do you think the folks rushing to put flags up are doing it for that reason?

Some yes most no but my point stands the poster I quoted said that there's no major sporting events on when there is.

Maray1967 · 25/08/2025 10:13

Just driving through my part (city suburb) and my DS’s part (small town) of Merseyside - not seen a single flag or painted roundabout so far.

justasking111 · 25/08/2025 10:13

Fly what you want, we've flown a Bermudan flag,

Well my point was asking if you've reported it.

And radical misogyny is recognised as the greatest threat in the UK to women and girls. I think some men demonstrating are scared that unless they protest now they won't be allowed to continue to oppress and abuse women and girls as they know that Fromage's policies are to ensure that is enabled.

BettysRoasties · 25/08/2025 10:15

Been out for a run this morning. Still no flags here apart from the ones that fly all year.

Maybe op lives in a more questionable place.

The thickos doing this will soon get bored when it rains and they can't swagger about with their paintbrushes, swigging cans of beer.

You’re on the wrong side of history with your comments. There is going to be a reckoning, I may well put up a flag myself and I can assure you I’m no “thicko”.

And it is overdue that the flag is taken back and represents its true meaning so no one feels uneasy.

Just decided to be a patriot today? How come you never loved your country enough yesterday to put it up?

Had to wait for someone to tell you to do it?

Fetaface · 25/08/2025 10:17

Nestingbirds · 25/08/2025 10:16

Well people feel uneasy as many of those flying it are accompanying it with racism.

Maybe stand up and tell your mates not to yell P* shagger at me and my partner as we walk past but hey you will not.

Seems far too many who are putting up flags are turning a blind eye to what the other groups (who coincidentally are doing it at the same time) and not holding them to account by saying this is not what this flag is about. Not seen one person do that, I have seen countless others join in.

Where are the non-racist flag fliers who want to stamp out racism and are actively doing something about it?

Pepperlee · 25/08/2025 10:18

Happyher · 25/08/2025 09:03

I just think it’s funny that all the yobs worship a flag commemorating a man born in a land now known as Turkey

And St Andrew?

Abhannmor · 25/08/2025 10:19

Only flags round here Republic of Ireland are GAA county flags. Except during WC or maybe on council offices.

Lots of flags up in Norn Iron of course , reflects the history of sectarian tensions , more understable I suppose. I first noticed England becoming flaggy about 10 years ago. Getting more Americanised perhaps?
