I nearly threw up when I saw it this morning - what a horrible shock.

It's a very small town in the Midlands near a city. Yes it's ex-mining but does reasonable ok now, not deprived eg no contextual offers for my dc for uni, but not massively desirable or trendy. Has a Labour MP now but hasn't always in recent years. Voted for Brexit but only just. In 2019 more people voted against Tories AND Brexit than for them - split the vote so we still got a Tory, but still.

In other words, I did not expect this. It's horrible - looks ugly and badly done even before you get started on the thinking behind it. AIBU to ring the council on Tuesday and ask when they are going to deal with this vandalism?

I did a four hour round-trip on the motorway today too and the amount of flags on bridges was shocking - just make it stop.

Well people feel uneasy as many of those flying it are accompanying it with racism.

Maybe stand up and tell your mates not to yell P* shagger at me and my partner as we walk past but hey you will not.

Seems far too many who are putting up flags are turning a blind eye to what the other groups (who coincidentally are doing it at the same time) and not holding them to account by saying this is not what this flag is about. Not seen one person do that, I have seen countless others join in.

Where are the non-racist flag fliers who want to stamp out racism and are actively doing something about it?

Edited

How dare you. My friends would never be racist to anyone and I have never heard of such awful things in this country, ever. Where in gods name do you even live that such open racism can exist? Have you contacted the police?

WatermelonGatorJerky · 25/08/2025 10:22

If councils embraced this movement, put up their own flags, used the flag to promote pride in a person’s community, then the handfuls of racists using the flag wouldn’t matter.

I’d love two flags, on a deck either side of my front door (very American). I think it looked lovely and I think I’d have an American flag and a Union Jack. The American flag because the USA is my first love and the UJ because I need to take more pride in being a Brit, which I hate right now.

I have no doubt that some racists and ignorant people are using the flag to represent ugly views or intimidate, but that doesn’t mean we give them our flag. A. Nations flag is too important, so we drown them out. We ensure it truly means pride in one’s nation.

Shouting that the flag makes you sick and that flags are decisive will only stoke the problem, because it angers people who see the flag as part of our national identity and feel that identity is being diluted or taken away. Even KS speech where he said we will become an island of strangers…no flag…no identity…no pride means what exactly?
Which makes me feel that people are showing pride in being British now because they are frightened. They fear losing their nation and culture.

And the UK does have culture and sometimes I am reminded of how unique and beautiful that is. Weirdly when I visit Epcot, and the UK pavilion is one of 11 pavilions, I see the UK in a different light. The pavilion features a pub, a castle, gardens, bandstands, a fish and chip shop, red phone boxes, shops selling tea and family coats of armour. It reminds me that the UK does have as much culture and uniqueness as Morocco or France or China and yes, we do need to protect that because today people often claim that the UK is culture-less. That it’s immigrants that add culture. But that’s not true.
Immigration is fine. Needed in many many cases. Probably a bit high right now (policy opinion). But what needs to happen is immigrants coming over need to integrate more (governments fault) and the government should be ensuring they are introduced to British culture and respect/embrace our culture to prevent divides.

So I say we should feel nothing but pride for our flag. We should not feel apologetic for our nation, culture or even history. We shouldn’t hand it over to people who use it nefariously.

But don’t graffiti the flag into buildings or roundabouts and spoil surroundings for other people. I can’t get on board with that. It is vandalism.

You’re on the wrong side of history with your comments. There is going to be a reckoning, I may well put up a flag myself and I can assure you I’m no “thicko”.

But your comment demonstrates otherwise.

means nothing to me

hattie43 · 25/08/2025 10:23

I think it’s lovely to see some patriotism

Nestingbirds · 25/08/2025 10:23

Secondly, the flag is our country’s flag and you can not conflate that with any kind of racism. It is deeply offensive to do so.

You know your country is doomed when it's own people hate it's flag.😞I am ashamed of the citizens that hate our country, shame on you. Emigrate if our flag makes you "nearly throw up"

What do you think of the news report about "patriotic behaviour" occurring during vandalising of property in the BBC article posted above?

I live in England, that country you are so proud of. This is England. The land where walking with a non-white (not Pakistani) man gets you called a p* shagger by those saying they are not racist and it is all about patriotism. If that is patriotism then Jesus we are screwed as a country.

I never said you and your mates would do it but are you and your mates out challenging this? Nope. I thought not, as you are pretending that this group of racists do not exist - they are just patriots remember, not racists.

So be proud of this England!

Yes we did report it and have reported the other racism we have experienced too. Have you reported any?

And radical misogyny is recognised as the greatest threat in the UK to women and girls. I think some men demonstrating are scared that unless they protest now they won't be allowed to continue to oppress and abuse women and girls as they know that Fromage's policies are to ensure that is enabled.

I do find myself wondering just how many of these protesters and flag painters (antagonists) are women. Not many would be my guess.

Tell that to Tommy ten names, Andrew Currien (previously been jailed for his part in a racist death) and others of their ilk.

Not many but internalised misogyny is also an issue as are those women who blindly follow their abusive men as they have no choice.

Nobody hates the flag. People dislike the the racist organisers of the current flag campaign.

No, this was about the men painting the flag above the shops and shouting racist abuse at people.

This but apparently speaking out about racism is wrong as it limits 'freedom of speech' innit.

Just waiting for the apologists claiming certain garb was "just a uniform" a few decades back.

Any vandalism, violence or threats are wrong.
