Baby - MIL - XL Bully

Koala98 · 23/08/2025 14:03

MIL has an XL Bully at her house, AIBU to say baby can never visit while the dog is on the property even if shut in a different room or garden?

Goodness gracious, that’s even worse somehow.

I hate XL Bully type dogs. I think the people that want to own them are compensating for something else. But to not exercise the dog and take it out is cruel. A dog of that size not being mentally and physically exercised is a recipe for disaster.

Thanks all, DH is completely on the same page as me although i seem to be getting blamed by others for the decision. We have had quite a bit of push back and as much as i knew we weren’t being PFB about it i just wanted external validation i suppose. They have owned the dog for years and i believe have a certificate but they don’t take the dog out so not sure on the muzzle. We will be stick to our guns on this

Apart from your MIL, who are the people who are pushing back on your decision and blaming you rather than blaming both you and your husband? You are absolutely doing the right thing and I can't bear to think what the behaviour of an XL Bully who never gets any exercise will be like.

I'd probably report them to the RSPCA.

So they have an extremely strong dog that they don’t bother to exercise….that’s not a recipe for disaster then!

stick to your guns and let your husband deal with all communication on the subject. He can tell your MIL she’s welcome when ever she likes to visit at yours you just won’t be risking going to hers.

Judecb · 25/08/2025 09:24

The bottom line is that these dogs are unpredictable. You cannot say with 100% certainty that your child is safe.

WittyTaupeLion · 25/08/2025 09:31

I wouldn’t have a baby near any dog regardless of breed. Obviously one shut in garden is different. Dogs can get stressed by babies crying.

CurlewKate · 25/08/2025 09:50

Rosyredapples · 23/08/2025 14:07

Babies can't open doors, but toddlers soon learn to do so, so better to say no you won't ever visit when the dog is there.

Yes. And adults can-which is often the immediate cause of dog related tragedies.

I wouldn't let my child anywhere near one.
I'd actually question the sanity of someone who gets one.

ChicTealCat · 25/08/2025 11:10

I have had dogs all my life. They have all been bigger crossbreeds. When the children were at home I was careful to make sure that they were ‘safe’ dogs. Now they are grown up and have their own homes, I have rescued Romanian dogs who have a lot more ‘history’ and trauma. I would never ever have let any of my kids in a house with an XL bully type of dog, let alone in the same room. It is too high a risk. No matter how friendly the Owner may say the dog is. This is not a dog that should be around children or strangers.

Feelinglost10 · 24/08/2025 18:48

LOL! And why is that? how can you say you aren’t a responsible dog owner for owning a certain breed

It’s a BANNED breed. Might be a clue in the word “banned”. Or the killing people stats. Hmm

Zodiacrobat · 25/08/2025 11:49

Maninpeace · 24/08/2025 21:23

Go with your gut. These dogs can be, and I’m not saying always, bred terribly by people who shouldn’t be breeding dogs. I’m sure some of them are genuinely lovely but they’re too dangerous when it goes wrong.

Why on earth your MIL decided out of the hundreds of dog breeds that she wanted to get one with an atrocious attack history when she has at least one grandchild beggars belief.

I think this might be the poster where it’s the waster BIL (MIL’s son) who has moved back home with his dog.
Apologies to OP if I’ve misremembered the name.

Catpiece · 25/08/2025 11:56

No and why the fuck has she got one anyway

Velvian · 25/08/2025 12:00

I don't think anyone is safe visiting a house with an XL. YANBU, at all!

I agree with the PP that no responsible dog owner owns an XL Bully.

That would explain why the op has done a runner, presumably having realised that explaining the truth of the situation will not help her case on here!

What are you talking about? She didn’t do a runner. She came back yesterday evening with additional information. It’s not the poster with the waster BIL, she says her PIL have had the dog for years.

what does banned have to do with anything?

a man got stabbed around the corner from me at the weekend, I take it your dad/partner was to blame since they’r also male?

It was banned for a reason.

Carrying knives is also banned for a reason. Obviously.

More like “a man got shot strong the corner from me- so guns should be banned/regulated.”

Edited

Which has worked beautifully in all countries which have banned/regulated private gun ownership in response to a shooting incident.

Meanwhile, in America...

Being too cute and cuddly, clearly.

Waitingfordoggo · 25/08/2025 16:07

YANBU. I wouldn’t take the baby there. I wouldn’t visit even without a baby. I love dogs in general, including some large breeds, but I’m scared of large bull breeds (with good reason IMO).

vickylou78 · 25/08/2025 16:30

There is no way id take a child to any property with a XL bully. Being shut in another room wouldn't reassure me as you'd only have to leave the door open a tiny bit and they'd be out. No chance I'd take the risk.

RapunzelHadExtensions · 23/08/2025 15:15

A jack Russell could, in theory, kill a child yes. But the bite drive is completely different.
A quick Google shows there is one case of JR killing a child, in 2013.
In 2024 ALONE, XL were responsible for at least 3 deaths, one of a 10 year old girl.
I hate Jr's but let's not be naieve.
The huge difference is a JR will bite/snap and release almost immediately, with a jaw of PSI of 150–200 PSI (pounds per square inch), which is comparable to the bite force of a human.
An XL Bully, and breeds such as Pitbulls etc, bite down and SHAKE. They don't let go. In comparison, XL's have a bite force of around 305 PSI. This is a significant bite force, comparable to some wild animals and considerably stronger than the average dog bite.

Please read into the breeding of these monstrous creatures and their blood line and don't make this comparison again.

Yes agree and also a Jack Russell can literally be picked up and pulled off or in dire circumstances an adult can easily injure/stop a jack Russell. The difference is even a grown adult would not be able to stop a XL bully!

Your response doesn’t make any sense at all and the two situations are not a match in any way shape or form.
