MIL has an XL Bully at her house, AIBU to say baby can never visit while the dog is on the property even if shut in a different room or garden?

If your children get invited to birthday parties or just round for tea do you ask if the family has a dog?

Of course. Why wouldn't you?

Anyway you would already know as you kinda know the family. You don't just simply pack your child off to a strangers house.

Obviously you don't go, but has she got a certificate of Exemption? They're a banned breed

Can the dog read? Is a certificate of exemption suddenly going to prevent the beast from mauling?

Never ever would I allow my children anywhere near anyone with one.

Ga66le · 24/08/2025 12:52

intrepidpanda · 24/08/2025 10:26

I wouldn't allow a child in any home with a dog,

I am the same. I always ask. My children will never go to a house with any dog. Let alone a bully breed. And yes - I do always ask. My children find dogs revolting and don't want to be on edge.

KrisAkabusi · 24/08/2025 12:57

My children find dogs revolting and don't want to be on edge.

That sounds like learned behaviour from you. It's a shame they don't like dogs. They are going to find things restrictive in the future if they can't be near them without being on edge.

I think it’s sad that you’ve trained them to be so negative about dogs. They will very likely miss out on play dates and sleepovers, as so many households have dogs.

it isn’t the point of the thread, though. Why are you trying to turn it into yet another thread about hating dogs in general?

FWIW, OP, YANBU. I wouldn’t want my DDs to be anywhere near an XL bully, same goes for me myself.

Glitchymn1 · 24/08/2025 06:31

Ah yes another one. Why can’t you people let posters have a different view point or at least read the bloody posts before commenting. Maybe the part where I say don’t leave a child alone with a dog.
I’ve also not championed the breed. I don’t own the breed.
Just to clarify for you and others. Again.

Edited

You were wrong about the nanny dog myth but yet you keep repeating it.

Would you be there with the baby? Or would your partner be there?
Is she a responsible dog owner?

All of these questions are irrelevant with dogs as large and strong as an XL bully.

RunningNananananananananana · 24/08/2025 14:51

Interesting that OP has made the one post and not returned 🤔

Not a question I've ever asked, I must say.

You mean you've taught your children to think about dogs the same way you do. How do your parents feel about dogs?

Why do you seem to have a problem with her asking this?

SliceofTosst · 24/08/2025 17:53

YANBU.

Absolutely no chance I'd go there.

Wimin123 · 24/08/2025 17:57

Nanny0gg · 23/08/2025 16:35

I agree,

But most family dogs, whilst never being left alone with small children and babies, don't need a muzzle. Or to be held on a lead at all times around them

Absolutely this. Why have a dog that would cause you so much stress. Walking it at quiet times, putting a muzzle on it etc etc - definitely takes the joy out of owning a dog.

CrispsinaBowl · 24/08/2025 18:23

My parents always had dogs and it's made me dislike them. I mean dogs, not my parents.

HappySummerDays · 23/08/2025 14:05

It doesn’t matter.

XL bully’s have frequently killed people whether the owner is responsible or not, whether a child’s parent is there or not. If it decides to go for the baby, nobody is stopping it quickly enough. The baby will be dead first.

Sally20099 · 24/08/2025 18:40

You are absolutely correct. Your MIl is a menace to society having a dog like that and critically endangering her family if she has it in proximity.

And? And learning to like meat-eating animals with sharp canine teeth isn't a learned behaviour too?

We should all be on edge around dogs. Hospital stats back this up.

A responsible dog owner doesn't own an XL bully.

LOL! And why is that? how can you say you aren’t a responsible dog owner for owning a certain breed

My father had dogs growing up. My mother is from a country where they have dogs but don't allow them in the house for sanitary reasons. I didn't know this til I was an adult though.

As soon as they split, my father got a dog. I found it utterly repulsive and didn't visit him in his him after that (I was 14).

Because it is irresponsible to inflict an animal so capable of tremendous damage on the rest of us, obviously, AND that they are prone to do so. I wouldn't care if they kept it locked in their own home/grounds with zero chance to escape, but unless they lived in a zoo that's not going to happen.

Because a responsible dog owner would know that it's not possible to safely own an XL bully.

It shouldn't even be legal to own one with a licence.

They should all be rounded up and PTS.

No, we should not all be on edge around dogs. What a ridiculous comment. The vast majority of dogs are no threat whatsoever, otherwise there wouldn't be millions of them as pets. It's fine to be on edge around certain breeds or sizes, but to think that should apply to every dog is crazy.
