How early to mow the grass?

Nosleepforthismum · 23/08/2025 07:07

What time is acceptable to start mowing the lawn? Mine desperately needs to be done and was thinking 8am will be fine?

And then they say no.

Maybe, maybe not. No harm in asking!

BlondeFool · 23/08/2025 09:16

8am is selfish. 10am at the earliest.

lazyarse123 · 23/08/2025 09:19

We live on a retirement park and it has quiet time between 10.30 and 8.00. Although saying that I think there's only us that has grass and dh waits until it's dried a bit. Usually after 9.00 but then we can do it any day. I think 9.00 is reasonable.

ApolloandDaphne · 23/08/2025 09:41

We live by a golf course and they start maintenance at 5.30/6am when it's light (later in winter obviously). Around here 8am would be considered a late start for mowing!

JMSA · 23/08/2025 09:43

8 is not fine.

<misses point> won't the grass be wet/dewy? I always wait til the afternoon so it's dried off. Am I an idiot? 🤪

I was thinking the same! Mine is still very wet in places

IsawwhatIsaw · 23/08/2025 10:49

our neighbour will cut the shared hedge in the front garden at 6:15on a weekend morning. Not very thoughtful

NamelessNancy · 23/08/2025 10:55

Even if some people think it's ok plenty do not. Therefore it's very likely you're going to upset/disturb someone. Don't do it. It's antisocial.

moleeye · 23/08/2025 10:56

Not before 9!

tattooproblems · 23/08/2025 12:32

This thread is a great reminder, that some people have kids and forget what life was like before.

I guarantee that Pre kids, after a Friday night out, there's NO way you'd be up at 8am, much less mowing the lawn.

So please don't be that utter dick that wakes the street, just because you don't lie in anymore.

And you stand for that? He'd be getting a blasting from me.

Jaws2025 · 23/08/2025 12:35

I did mine at 9am once and could hear a neighbour shouting about it upstairs. I retreated and did it later.

MissHollysDolly · 23/08/2025 12:38

8 is fine

DuesToTheDirt · 23/08/2025 12:41

On a weekend I'd say 9.30.

TheChosenTwo · 23/08/2025 12:56

I’d say 9 was socially acceptable on a Saturday.
i wouldn’t grumble though if you were my neighbour and you mowed at 8, I’m up by then anyway.
and my dc with bedrooms at the back of the house wouldn’t hear you!
lunchtime onwards is way more annoying if you’ve got people over for lunch or indeed trying to enjoy your garden but tbh I don’t mind the hum of a mower if I’m laying on my sun lounger.

j1307 · 23/08/2025 13:47

The law says 7am, though that might lead to some grumpy neighbors. Give it another hour after that

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 23/08/2025 13:51

I’d say not before 10 on a weekend.

Bloke across the road is out now trimming his hedge with the radio going.

8am is fine on a Saturday, people are having supermarket deliveries at 7am. I’ll start at 9am on a Sunday.

huh? what's the correlation between a supermarket delivery and mowing your lawn? One takes seconds, one takes half an hour. One makes no noise, one makes lots. I don't notice when my neighbour gets a delivery, anymore than I'd notice when they bring groceries from their own car into their house. I certainly notice when they mow their lawn

As a late riser I think anything before 9 is really anti social and tbh would retaliate by mowing mine at 9pm when the nights are longest. so as long as you're okay with that crack on.

as pps have said, what's the rush?

Corfumanchu · 23/08/2025 16:30

The grass isnt damp at 8, tbe sun has been up hours by then, akso uf rhey are usinf a flymo it doesn't matter!

DiscoBeat · 23/08/2025 16:41

It's selfish to anyone wanting a lie in. I'd say 10 too.

Tesco and ASDA around here aren’t quiet by any means.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 23/08/2025 17:04

I wouldn’t even let my kids play out until 9

NewLifeLoading · 23/08/2025 17:07

Meadowfinch · 23/08/2025 07:27

I don't know anyone who is still asleep at 8am, except my teen, and he could sleep through a bomb going off so makes no difference.

My ex occasionally worked nights and preferred people to mow early so he would not be disturbed once he was deep asleep.

8am is fine.

Edited

Really? I find that hard to believe

lazystar · 23/08/2025 18:03

If you think its reasonable to make noise outside at 8am then you have no reason to complain when your neighbours make noise OUTSIDE late at night.
Im a night owl I cant change no matter how many early jobs I have. The whole world revolves around Larks and we are made to feel wrong that our body clock is exhausted after 3cups of coffee and its still only 9am.
Its the summer holidays and a Saturday- dont be selfish.
