What do you think of the flags?

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

We actively turned down a perfectly sized and respectable home, because the next street had 3 front gardens with flags in.

Couldn’t have avoided it any harder if we tried 😂

You must have narrowed your search down to "chavvy" areas then. Maybe raise the bar or your affordability?

The whole neighbourhood you 'avoided,' are devastated that you didn't buy that house. They've had to form support groups and everything.

We did, thanks for your concern though. 😊

The street we were looking at was fine, but round the corner from flagville is too close for me, thank you.

Flagville 🤢

Momstermash94 · 21/08/2025 20:37

I'm not even British but even I think its refreshing to see St George's flags around, I have always thought it a shame that the English often feel like they can't wave their flag without it being deemed as racist and how little St George's day is celebrated. The British, in particular the English have lost a lot of patriotism through the years and I think its nice to see people be proud and patriotic again. Everyone should be proud of where they are from

Flagville 🤢

Definitely nauseating, I agree!

We’re agreeing @Blinky21, which is why I used the word perceived.

People bang on about English pride but show nothing of the values we are known for 😂

it’s telling to me they are targeting places with large black and Asian populations- curious that.

I’m not sure that’s true. I live in an area that is at least 95% white and the flags are everywhere.

In Birmingham the flags are nearly all in the areas with the highest % of white people. The areas with large black and Asian populations in the city haven’t been touched.

You keep saying “the flags” as if we’re meant to know what they are. Clearly something’s going on that I’ve missed entirely? What are “the flags” and where are they? And yes I’ve skimmed the thread but everyone’s just discussing English flags versus Welsh ones versus Scottish ones. I still don’t know what THE FLAGS are.

Yes, we are wanting you to explain.

You say we have a “Government that fails to put its people first” - So how exactly is flying England flags from lampposts in residential areas going to help citizens of the UK which are being failed by the government?

Please can you coherently explain your reasonings.

Well it's a lot more effective that marching about with a palestian flag. At least out govt have the power to change stuff in their own country and absolutely buggar all ability to do anything about Palestine.

Cheshire tax 🤷🏻‍♀️

Still managed to find somewhere free of the flag epidemic you’re all going on about though, so must have done alright. No painted on roundabouts here!

I assume the French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, and Belgian flags give you similar imperialist vibes?

Well no actually.

Nevertrustacop · 21/08/2025 20:43

YourFavouriteFalafel · 21/08/2025 20:18

It's not that we're not proud of the flag or our nationality - I drive a mini cooper with Union Jack mirror caps overseas proudly! - it's the very well known reasons and connotations (which they proudly state) behind flying it in bad faith in an attempt to intimidate others that they class as non-British and non-belonging.

Well, none of this is true.

👏 👏 the hard left love their marching. Huffing and puffing about the far right and then finding themselves on a proscribed terrorist list.

Although I live nowhere near to where the recent upsurge in dispalying England Flags is it does seem a bit of a shame that flying the English national flag is so often associated with racism and all that bad Nazi stuff, etc.

If what OP states is true, that the organisers just want to reclaim the English flag as a national flag for the country called England then I have no problem with that.

And would be mighty curious to know exactly why anyone that lives in England thinks that displaying their national flag is wrong.

There is a pattern of Facebook accounts, created hours before posting, popping up on local community groups all over the country that are starting divisive debates around flags. They get 100s of comments, some discussing stopping boats, some calling to arms to protect our children, some asking to join rallies (I have attached a screenshot of one). So there is nothing wrong with displaying the English flag. But the flag is being displayed for the wrong reasons.

What do you think of the flags?

Ohlifelife · 21/08/2025 20:42

Funny that. Wink 'Selective outrage' I think that's called.

Purplebutterups · 21/08/2025 20:44

This really is a British thing. Currently in DHs mainland Europe country, and it’s pretty rare to go down any street and NOT see a flag. Was recently in Spain and it was the same there. Loving your own country doesn’t mean you hate anyone who is from somewhere else.

ASimpleLampoon · 21/08/2025 20:48

Liliwen · 21/08/2025 18:16

I’m in Wales and having a Welsh flag is not a big deal and quite common if your town is hosting an Eisteddfod. However my little town has suddenly become insanely patriotic, putting flags up all over the shop because there is a rumour about asylum seekers being housed here. The flag by itself means nothing. The intent behind flying it is everything.

I'm in Cardiff. Someone on a local FB group suggested putting them up o be patriotic. I suggested that they should learn Welsh, or open A Welsh History book, or bring back A great tradition like Mari Llwyd, I wrote in Welsh at first so of course none of these "patriots" understood..

Zov · 21/08/2025 20:43

Who said I was outraged?
It's just how I feel.
I think it's to do with me being English. And being embarrassed by what these flags represent and how they are used to whip up patriotism for the wrong reasons.
And to do with my embracing the call for Scottish Independence.
I

Digdongdoo · 21/08/2025 20:50

No issue with the flags intrinsically. Just wish the racists would stop spoiling it for everyone else.
The union jack is a far better looking flag though.

So funny. There's a house on the next street like this. <whispers> I think they might be a little bit chavvy racist . </end whisper> Our street has a large cultural foreign population and I don't think it's been a problem.

How can you deny it when they're so open about the reasons and support for it online for all to see?
