What do you think of the flags?

Latesummersunset · 21/08/2025 18:05

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

Yes, we are wanting you to explain.

You say we have a “Government that fails to put its people first” - So how exactly is flying England flags from lampposts in residential areas going to help citizens of the UK which are being failed by the government?

Please can you coherently explain your reasonings.

I'll assume you own a brain and can think for yourself.

Latesummersunset · 21/08/2025 20:13

The local group that started this in Brum are being very clear that they do not want to be associated with any far right political groups.

They say that the flags are for all to feel proud no matter your race or religion.

They say that their aim is to reclaim the flag from racists.

Tired? Off you go to bed then, and let the grown ups talk.

That's rubbish. There was a Sikh gentleman on the news last night discussing this, proudly draped in a union jack because he's British. My local Indian restaurant displays st george and Indian flags when there's a cricket match on. Why are we not allowed to fly our flag when pretty much every other country displays theirs with pride?

If you want to buy a flag pole and display a flag, no one is going to stop you. Fly that flag!

Blinky21 · 21/08/2025 20:14

The issue is the council is only finding the money to remove British / English flags. There are areas of Birmingham that have Palestine flags flying from
every lamppost for miles & they’ve been allowed to fly for months, with no attempt to remove them.

I wish those in power would realise that it’s the perceived unfairness / two tier system that now seems to exist, which is upsetting people. Nothing more! It’s not complicated & it’s not actually racism driving it either - it’s unfairness & also when the unfairness is highlighted or challenged, people are shut down without being heard, usually by being called racists, which then can lead to anger & hate.

Perceived, exactly, not based in fact.

My goodness, such originality. When are you going to start dishing out the clichés- oh you've started already. Let me settle down with my trusted bingo card. It's half full.

It's not that we're not proud of the flag or our nationality - I drive a mini cooper with Union Jack mirror caps overseas proudly! - it's the very well known reasons and connotations (which they proudly state) behind flying it in bad faith in an attempt to intimidate others that they class as non-British and non-belonging.

Yes, well done, I do own a brain. I can also think for myself.

I don’t really understand why flying England flags from lampposts in residential areas will influence the government to “put its people first”.

It’s a real shame that you refuse to engage in discussion and share your reasonings. I’m just going to assume it’s because you’ve been brainwashed by Farage, Yaxley-Lennon, Tice etc. that the government cares more about “illegals” than it does its own citizens. But feel free to debunk my assumption.

Whatever.

TheHateIsNotGood · 21/08/2025 20:29

Although I live nowhere near to where the recent upsurge in dispalying England Flags is it does seem a bit of a shame that flying the English national flag is so often associated with racism and all that bad Nazi stuff, etc.

If what OP states is true, that the organisers just want to reclaim the English flag as a national flag for the country called England then I have no problem with that.

And would be mighty curious to know exactly why anyone that lives in England thinks that displaying their national flag is wrong.

MaxandMeg · 21/08/2025 20:30

SpottyAardvark · 21/08/2025 18:50

Britain is the only place in the world which could create a culture war out of people flying their own flag in their own country.

It’s as embarrassing as it is pathetic. And we wonder why the rest of the world used to respect us, but now they pity us and they laugh at us.

Not the only country. My son and DIL live on Long Island - prosperous estate largely MAGA (they are Democrats). They have had an official visitation from the Resident's Association demanding to know why they are not flying the flag. Seems you're not allowed to opt out.

JustSawJohnny · 21/08/2025 20:30

From the very people who hate 'virtue signalling', we get wholly unnecessary, patriotic displays of Nationalism that only make an area look chavvy.

It's an own goal, IMO.

I really hope it doesn't start around here.

Zov · 21/08/2025 20:30

ninjahamster · 21/08/2025 18:38

Ah so you are not putting them up to be patriotic. Says it all.

Yeah you're right, I'm not remotely patriotic, I just put England flags up to piss people off.

Renamed · 21/08/2025 20:31

Are we at war, or in the World Cup Final?
Is it a significant national anniversary?
Is the King dead?
Are people putting the flags on their own property because they like to see them there, or conversely, commandeering public space with no thought to maintenance or propriety.
well then, it is quite clearly a load of far right shit stirring hysteria.

We actively turned down a perfectly sized and respectable home, because the next street had 3 front gardens with flags in.

Couldn’t have avoided it any harder if we tried 😂

user2848502016 · 21/08/2025 18:45

I’m Welsh so am not going to be flying any St George’s crosses any time soon - but I actually think the negative associations with it are a shame. English people should be allowed to fly the national flag and be proud to be English.
I think the flag should be “reclaimed” from the far right, it’s the English flag it’s not a symbol of racism or far right extremism!
It’s quite common for people to fly Welsh flags over here so flying the English flag shouldn’t be something weird to do in England.

Exactly. Thanks for this @user2848502016 👏

Strawberryorangejuice · 21/08/2025 20:33

I really like our flags, but this latest drive seems to be by a bunch of racists and that's sad. Those posting about it on our local group accompany it with comments of 'they can't ban our flags'. Meh, no one wants to ban them to bunch of fools!
