What do you think of the flags?

Latesummersunset · 21/08/2025 18:05

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

No objection to people flying flags but what will it achieve? Think the Houses of Parliament are on recess at present so M.Ps will probably be in sunnier climes and won't notice the fervent flag flapping. Also, I'm inclined to think that an awful lot of the flag raising posts on FB are from bots.
Think I'll go and put my Cornish flag up anyway but I don't have a greasy pole so DH will have to scale the lamp post outside to do the erection

TinyIsMyNewt · 21/08/2025 21:17

Its a stunt to whip up the racists.

If people want to put flags up on their own properties, they can do so.

But instead, they're putting loads of them up in places where they're guaranteed to be removed, so that they can bleat about censorship, oppression and British/English pride.

It'll work, too, because social media has turned folks into absolute dimwits.

KnickerlessParsons · 21/08/2025 18:11

Wales and Scotland fly their respective flags everywhere. I don’t know about NI, but it’s time England took some pride in its flag too (though not PRIDE)

Yes, it's strange that many countries fly their flags everywhere with no issue. There are many Palestinian and Ukraine flags flying so what's the problem with either the English one or the Union Flag? Was recently in Greece and the Greek flag was everywhere. Is it more self loathing for England?

😁

Someone has been and put some on the lampposts round here… just the ones on my road … the reason being that someone had applied for planning permission for a 4 bed HMO.
The knuckleheads (who don’t live here), have put the flags up, almost as a warning.. like a gang marker.

Makes me sick. It’s not about patriotism, is about keeping people out.

Livelovebehappy · 21/08/2025 21:27

I’m #teamflythflag. Love the patriotism. Love that people are showing the pride in our country. Love that we have the freedom to do it, even if only on our own properties. Long may the current trend to fly our flag continue 🇬🇧

It’s a peaceful form of pointless performative “protest” that will achieve the square root of fuck all.

If you don’t like something the government does, find out how you can best influence government policy and do that.

The government doesn’t give two shits about someone flying a flag.

Does the same apply when someone is waving the Palestine flag? People seem quite happy to wave those in huge numbers in London even the day after a massive terrorist attack on it's neighbour.

Anonymouseposter · 21/08/2025 21:36

I'm not a fan of flag waving at all. I think flags really belong in sporting events.
However I live in Wales where flying the Welsh flag is fairly common and, by contrast, it's a shame that the St. George's flag has become associated with extremism
.I can see why there might be a move to disassociate the English flag from that but no, I don't want to see flags flying all over the place.

Timeforabitofpeace · 21/08/2025 21:37

i think they are for small thinkers.

Plenty of us are sick of seeing that bloody flag. They are everywhere and keffiyehs. Amazon and such like, are laughing their heads off.

Chocolatefreak · 21/08/2025 21:40

The poll results and the comments are contradictory - the majority of the comments seem to think YABU but YANBU is in the lead - are people saying one thing but voting another way?!

They are really high up … horrible nylon things - I genuinely wondered if I could somehow set fire to them. I just hope they come down on in a stiff breeze.

Nobody can tell me that it’s anything other than anti-immigrant rhetoric.

The HMO is across from me, the only thing I’m bothered about is parking (that’s proper British values)

Someone was online horrified that it was “across the road from a school” - the school closed over 20 years ago, and has been demolished.

I can’t even imagine the audacity required to put flags up on a street you don’t even live on, because something is going to happen there that won’t affect you.

Absolute insanity!

EmpressoftheMundane · 21/08/2025 21:49

It’s really sad when a country’s flag is coopted to mean something shameful. Perhaps the best way to reclaim the national flag is to ignore that they mean anything other than pride in the UK and England (same as other countries do). If bad actors can’t get a rise out of anyone, it defeats their object.

On that basis, Birmingham should leave them up, looking cheery. When they start to look tatty (which won’t take long- they are cheap!) then take them down.

Basically just stay calm, don’t over react, and don’t rise to any innuendo.

Yeah, it is weird, flying flags for something - and supporting something that doesn't affect you isn't it? Wink

I don’t have a Palestine flag up if that’s that you mean. I actually don’t have any flags, nor do I gift them to others in my local area.

You need to visit Northern Ireland where you are in absolutely no doubt if you are in a unionist or nationalist area. Union Jack Flags and Tricolours flying everywhere, depending on the area. Not to mention the painted kerbstones!

I don't like it to be honest, it's very "in your face" in NI.

There's a house down the end of my road that has covered itself in palestine flags and they have 'free palestine' in huge font going across the house. It really baffles me but for some reason reminds me of Eastenders in the 90s when the Joe absolom character was in jail and everyone had "free the Walford one" posters up, well not everyone, but im tempted to cover my house in "free the walford one" posters and pictures of Joe Absolom 😍

YelloDaisy · 21/08/2025 21:58

The Union Jack is the best national flag bar none - but I’m happy to see the odd St George’s too -I’m in Scotland and St Andrews flags are flown proudly
