What do you think of the flags?

Latesummersunset · 21/08/2025 18:05

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

People have had years and years to put up flags if they want to. Suddenly asylum seekers are all over the news and NOW they decide they need to put them up?

Flag England GIF by Wimbledon

So?

I will put 10 of them up I think!

If nothing else, I know it annoys the Liberal left social justice warriors! 😎 And this make me happy. 😆

(I'm a petty little twat I know.) 😂

Wales and Scotland fly their respective flags everywhere. I don’t know about NI, but it’s time England took some pride in its flag too (though not PRIDE)

Well, let's fly it here then ;)

It was tedious the first time, but 4 times 🫣.

Yeah, sorry about that. MN told me my post hadn’t posted.

I think nothing would enrage the bad faith flag flyers more than every POC flying one and reclaiming it, after all we are British/English too, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. I think a lot of people are still in the 'this too shall pass' stage and keeping their heads down to protect themselves and their families.

Ah so you are not putting them up to be patriotic. Says it all.

Save us from flag shaggers generally, but the additional problem with the English flag is that few others have the same awful reputation. It’s not known as the butcher’s apron for nothing.

Ooh, now I could say something to that but it would get deleted. I can guarantee my prediction is right though.

Meadowfinch · 21/08/2025 18:40

I like them.

I'm proud of being British and English. They are my national flags. The flags themselves need maintaining to keep them tidy of course but we should display them more often to prevent them from being adopted by the far right.

To me the Union Jack represents cricket and Victoria sponge cake, bluebells and cycling to the pub for supper. I want it to stay that way.

saveforthat · 21/08/2025 18:41

I love them. For many years the cross of St George has been associated with thugs, especially football hooligans. How lovely it would be if people got used to seeing it everywhere and it just became our national flag again. I'd fly one myself but flagpoles are really expensive.

This has crossed my mind.

cos as we’ve seen with Zov here, the flag raising aim is to piss off other people more than anything else.

id class myself as a liberal left social justice warrior (Zov forgot woke) and tbh I couldn’t give a fuck.

Raise the flag all you want, no one cares bar you.

What do you do anyway? Stick it on a flag pole then go home proud of your actions for the day? 🙄

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/08/2025 18:41

For me, it’s not the flags per se, it’s the attitude behind them. Pride in one’s nation is fine, but this all seems to be enmeshed with the racist, anti-immigrant, UKIP types, and that is offensive and nothing to be proud of.

HowamIgoingtocope · 21/08/2025 18:42

Thwy are a piece of fabric with a patern on. That is all. Inanimate object.

Throwntothewolves · 21/08/2025 18:42

The only time I've not liked flags being displayed everywhere was 2014 ahead of the referendum vote in Scotland on independence. They became decisive and a sign of political views in Scotland. I guess similar is happening in England, though your opening post doesn't explain that clearly.

Fwiw there are asylum seekers staying in various hotels in our town. There doesn't seem to be much if any negativity among local residents about this. Perhaps other places should have a think about what exactly the problem is. It seems from this distance at least, that some English towns have a problem with the attitude of their 'native' residents. Here in Scotland it doesn't seem like the attitude is the same

Zipzaps · 21/08/2025 18:42

OtherS · 21/08/2025 18:34

It's obviously a political statement, but I think the fact that flying our national flag is a political statement is ridiculous. I do certainly think it's absolutely atrocious that other countries' flags are allowed to remain whilst the English one is removed! But probably the only way to stop it being politicised and used by racists is to embrace it ourselves and fly it with the same patriotism that other countries fly theirs. So maybe the best thing to do it to smile, comment on how they brighten the place up, and refuse to rise to them. If councils start putting them up themselves, I think that would help. And then after a few months of mad flag-flying, most could come down and just a few remain.

Or we could just remove any and all flags unless there's a specific reason for them, like on an embassy. I'd probably prefer that, personally.

This is propaganda too. Where are "all" other countries' flags allowed to remain?

If people are flying them on their own property, they'll remain, just as the British ones will. If they're on public property, all flags get removed - or at least they do here.

Why not make the attempt? Be worth seeing you post something eloquent for a change. ;-)

user2848502016 · 21/08/2025 18:45

I’m Welsh so am not going to be flying any St George’s crosses any time soon - but I actually think the negative associations with it are a shame. English people should be allowed to fly the national flag and be proud to be English.
I think the flag should be “reclaimed” from the far right, it’s the English flag it’s not a symbol of racism or far right extremism!
It’s quite common for people to fly Welsh flags over here so flying the English flag shouldn’t be something weird to do in England.

Yes, because butcher's apron is positively exuding eloquence.

MiloMinderbinder925 · 21/08/2025 18:46

Load of racist shite and council's are having to spend money they don't have removing them all.

Stream77 · 21/08/2025 18:46

There have been a huge number put up around my area. The local MP who is a Conservative has said he thinks they’re great and is fully supportive of them being displayed.

I’ve not heard of a single person local to me being anything other than supportive.

Whatifitallgoesright · 21/08/2025 18:46

People fly the flags of other countries in the UK so if course they should stay. I think it's preposterous that Birmingham council can't collect rubbish or potholes but within hours can get staff out to paint over a flag on a mini roundabout. Imagine the French accepting their government telling them they couldn't fly their flag? It's laughable.

No one's telling anyone they can't fly the flag. They are saying they can't put it on property that doesn't belong to them. Just as the French do.

There are some Palestine flags in Brum that have been up for a while and haven’t been removed.

The council said that they have tried to remove them but were met with aggression from residents.

If people want to fly flags, fine.

I just wonder why the sudden enthusiasm? What has triggered it, and who is organising it?

Haha and all the while the council caves in - typical weak Labour - it will go full circle.
