What do you think of the flags?

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

Britain is the only place in the world which could create a culture war out of people flying their own flag in their own country.

It’s as embarrassing as it is pathetic. And we wonder why the rest of the world used to respect us, but now they pity us and they laugh at us.

There are some Palestine flags in Brum that have been up for a while and haven’t been removed.

The council said that they have tried to remove them but were met with aggression from residents.

That's not what they've said at all. This is what happens when you get your news from SM or just read headlines in papers with an agenda.

ghostyslovesheets · 21/08/2025 18:52

People bang on about English pride but show nothing of the values we are known for 😂

it’s telling to me they are targeting places with large black and Asian populations- curious that.

Please do correct if you believe you have a better source.

Yes, because butcher's apron is positively exuding eloquence.

Quite poetic, I thought. Certainly more erudite than you screaming “BUT PALESTINE FLAGS?!?” across the thread. 😅 Anyway, I’ll step out now and let you froth yourself into a fervour. Have a joyful life.

I think the govt need to find a nice thing to celebrate that requires flags going up. Maybe they could get Charles to abdicate or something.. Have a legitimate celebration that the country can get behind and leave the flags up a good while after, quietly taking them down once everyone had run out of puff and moved in to the next thing.

Thepeopleversuswork · 21/08/2025 18:55

In theory it should be a nice thing for people to feel that the St George's cross has been detoxified and to fly the flags with pride. I certainly have no problem with them.

But the timing of this and its embrace by the far right, is making me feel a bit sick.

Lucy Connolly was released today.

I saw the Israeli flag referred to as the butcher's apron, and on this thread, the St George flag. Now I bet these are the same people, who are out every Saturday flying the flag that's being forced on locals and used to intimidate. I thought the hypocrisy would rear its head - again.

Shewasafaireh · 21/08/2025 18:57

What flags? I don’t know what you’re referring to.

There is a leaked email where it has been said that police protection is needed to remove the Palestine flags.Due to issues that arose when they tried.

What other way can that be taken?

The council put them up in my Surrey Village a few weeks ago. They look celebratory and no one here seems to have a problem with them.

They were up in the village of Wetwang when we drove thru recently. No idea why but they looked very jolly.

PurpleChrayn · 21/08/2025 18:59

Good.

Better than the flag of a terrorist regime.

Dangermoo · 21/08/2025 19:00

They are lovely to see in Lincolnshire. We are a county proud of our military history. I moved here from Brum 4 years ago. Breath of fresh air to see poppies, on every lamp post, each November, too. No being made to feel shamed or called far right.

KnickerlessParsons · 21/08/2025 18:11

Wales and Scotland fly their respective flags everywhere. I don’t know about NI, but it’s time England took some pride in its flag too (though not PRIDE)

I’m in Scotland and I wouldn’t say the Saltire is flown everywhere. It certainly wouldn’t be flown in response to refugee housing.

I love seeing them! I’m an immigrant and I love seeing the flags - it’s heartwarming to see people taking pride in their country, their culture, their heritage. It makes a nice change! 🙂

Like Colm in Father Ted, many of us here on Merseyside, couldn't commit full time, to the ol' you know what. Possibly a bit over summer, the rest of the time the flags are out for football.

ilovepixie · 21/08/2025 19:08

We have Flegs in NI 😂😂

Load of racist shite and council's are having to spend money they don't have removing them all.

There's loads of them near me. They are on every single lamp post. They look shit.

They have been put up by the 'these days if you say you're English you'll be arrested and thrown in jail' people .
